• Makesureallcontrols(leversandpedals)areintheNEUTRALpositionbeforestartingthecarrier.

• Whileoperatingthebreakerandcarrier,keephandsandfeetonthecontrolsatalltimes.

• Before leaving the carrier, always lower theboomandinsurethecarrierisstable.Neverleavethema-chinewith theengine running.ALWAYSENGAGETHEPARKINGBRAKE.

• Stoptheenginebeforeattemptingtomakeanyre-pairs,adjustmentsorservicingtoeitherthecarrierorthebreaker.

• Donotoperate the tool at oil temperaturesabove190°F/88°C.Operationathighertemperaturescandamage the internal components of the breakerandcarrierandwill result in reducedbreakerper-formance.

• Donotoperateadamaged,leaking,improperlyad-justed,orincompletelyassembledbreaker.

• Donotmodifythebreakerinanymanner.• Use only tool bits supplied by Stanley Hydraulic

Tools.Use of tool bits supplied by anothermanu-facturermaydamagethebreakerandwillvoidthewarranty.

• Toavoidpersonal injuryorequipmentdamage,allbreakerrepair,maintenanceandservicemustonlybe performed by authorized and properly trainedpersonnel.

• Ifyoudonotunderstandhowtosafelyoperateyourbreaker, contact an authorized Stanley Dealer forassistance.

PREPARATION FOR OPERATIONNITROGEN CHARGEThebreakerhasbeenproperlychargedwithnitrogenatthefactoryandisreadytouse(seepage20)forcharg-inginformation.

TOOL BIT LUBRICATIONGrease the top250mm/10 inchesof thebreaker toolbit before installing.During operation, the tool can begreasedthroughthegreasefitting.Greaseasrequired.Make sure the tool bit is against the tool stop by placing the tool bit against the ground and then put-ting down pressure on the breaker. SEE THE ILLUS-TRATION BELOW AND ON THE FOLLOWING PAGE.

Greasing the tool bit without down pressure on the tool will result in grease filling the space

between the piston and the tool bit.When the breaker is next activated, the piston will strike the grease at a speed that will cause

the grease to apply great force against the seals and grease zerk resulting in damage to these

components.

EXISTING EQUIPMENT HYDRAULICS VS APPLICATION ATTACHING KITSUsing existing equipment hydraulic auxiliary systemsforoperatinghydraulic toolscouldcauseproblems forthehydraulictoolandthehydraulicsystemifnotsetupproperly.Simplypluggingintothehydraulicsystemwith-outconfirmingpressureandflowtothehydraulictoolisnotagoodpractice.Sparespoolvalves,dippercircuits,etc., are just a few examples of easily accessible hy-drauliccircuitswhichcouldprovetocauseproblemsforhydraulic tool usage.ATTACHINGKITSadapt toexistinghydraulicsystemsofmanypopularbackhoesandexcavators.Ifyourequipmentdoesnotcontainanattachingkit,askyour Stanley dealer for information, installation, andpricingonakitwhichmatchesyourequipmentneeds.

TEST THE HYDRAULIC SYSTEM1. HaveyourStanleydealertesttheexcavatorhydrau-

licsystemtomakesurethesystemisoperatingatthemanufacturersspecifiedcapacityandpressureratings.

2. Besurethefluidinthehydraulicsystemisclean.3. Checkthehydraulicfilter.Replacethefilterifdirtyor

deteriorated.4. Have yourStanley dealer test the circuit towhich

thebreakerwillbeconnectedtomakesurethatthecircuit issupplyingthespecifiedflowandpressurerating for the breaker. See the SPECIFICATIONSsectionofthismanual.

4. Install the tool bit making sure the notches arealignedwiththelowerbodytoolretainerpinholes.

5. Installthetoolretainerpins,retainerpinandrubberplug.See“Important”Figure3.

LOW-TEMPERATURE WARM-UP PROCEDURE1. Afterstartingtheexcavator,warm-upthehydraulic

system at engine idle until hydraulic lines are warm to the touch.

2. Withtheexcavatoratidleandthebreakersuspend-edintheairorwithminimaldownpressure,turnonthebreaker tograduallywarmup its internalcom-ponents.

3. Whenthehydraulicsystemandbreakerarewarm,proceedwithoperation.SeetheOPERATIONsec-tionofthismanual.

LONG TERM STORAGEUse the following procedure if storage of the break-er is expected to be more than 6 months.IMPORTANT:Thepistonprotrudesoutthebottomofthecylinderwhennotinuse,althoughitisinsidethelowerbodyitwillstillbeexposedtotheelementsandwillrustdamaginginternalcomponentswhenitisputbackintoservice.Removethetoolbitanddischargethenitrogengasfromtheupperaccumulator.Usethetoolbittopushthepis-toninsidethecylinderwhereitwillbeprotectedfromtheelements.Greasethelowerendoftheexposedpistonthoroughly.Also thoroughlycoat the toolbit, toolstop,retainingpins,andlowerbushingwithgrease.If hoses are attached to the breaker, install plugs onthehoseends.Ifhosesareremovedfromthebreaker,install plugson thehoseendsand install plugs in thebreaker“IN”and“OUT”ports.Storebreakerinadryareaundercoverifpossible.Itisbesttostorethebreakerinanareathathasaconsistenttemperaturetohelpavoidwatercondensationcausingrust.Storethebreakerinaverticalposition.Donotstorethebreakerhorizontallyforextendedperiods.Ifthebreakerhasbeenlaidhorizontallyformorethan6months,checkand/orreplaceallseals.Checkforcorro-sionofboltsbeforeoperation.

PRE-OPERATION

When installing the tool retainer pin (item 28)makesuretherubberplug(item 35) is fully seated.TherubberplugMUST beinstalled BELOW FLUSH toproperlysecurethepin.

POSITIONING THE BREAKER TOOL ON THE WORK MATERIALPositionthetoolbitneartheedgeoftheworkmaterial,notinthecenterorfarfromtheedge.Positionthetool6-18inches(dependingonthematerial)fromtheedge.Breakingoffsmallerpiecesofrockorconcreteusuallyaccomplishesmorethantryingtobreaklargerpieces.

Figure5.PositiontheBreakerOn flat material or rock,thebreakershouldbeverticalor“curled”backslightlytodirecttheimpactforcedown-ward and toward the backhoe. This directs the forceback toward theedgeof theworkmaterial. If the toolispositioned in thecenterof thework,or too far from

theedge,theenergywillbeabsorbedintothematerialwithoutcrackingit.Donotrunthebreaker longerthan15-20 seconds. If breakout does not occurwithin thistime,movethebreakertoanotherposition.Onflatmaterial suchasconcrete runways, starting tobreakinthemiddleofthematerialmaycausevibrationstobetransmittedthroughoutthebreakerandexcavatorbecausethematerialhasnoplacetobreakto.Alwaystry to start at a pointwhichwill permit thematerial tobreakout.

MAINTAIN DOWN PRESSUREMaintaininghardcontactwiththesurfaceofthematerialtobebrokeninadditiontomaintainingadequate"downforce" isvery important.Alwayskeep"downpressure"or"downforce"onthepointofthebreakerbyliftingthewheels,tracks,orstabilizersslightlyabovetheground.Thismethod takes the "slack" out of the bracket andboompivots, and reduces the impact on thepivots intheboom.

Maintain Down PressureTheoperatorneedstobeconstantlyawareoftheamountofdownpressurebeingappliedandbeabletoadjustitifnecessary.Notenoughdownpressureresults in lowproductionandaccelerateswearandtearontheequip-ment.Toomuchdownpressuremaycausethebreakerhousingtoviolentlycrashintothebrokenmaterialwhen"break-through"occurs.Inanybreakingjob,theoperatorshouldmakeeveryef-fortto“follow”thebreakerwith“down-pressure”asthemachine breaks farther into thematerial.The breakershouldbestoppedassoonas“break-thru”occursorifitisapparentthatgoodsolidblowsarenotoccurring.

BREAKINGTheoperatorshouldnote thesoundof theblowwhenthebreakerisrunning.Withexperience,theoperatorwillbeabletotellthedifferencebetweenagoodsolidblowandahollowsoundingblow.Ahollowblowmeansthatsolidblowsarenotoccurringandthebreakershouldberepositioned.Continuous toolpenetrationusuallydoesnotdomuchgood.Ifthematerialdoesnotbreakwith3to4inchesoftoolpenetration,itusuallywon’tbreakwithfullpenetra-tion.Thetimeusedforadditionalpenetrationcouldbebetterusedtostrikeblowsinanotherplace.

Continuousbreakinginthesameareaforlengthyperiodswillcreateexcessivetemperaturesatthetipofthetoolbitresultinginlossoftemper

(hardness)ofthebitandcausingmushroomingofthetipofthebit,andmayleadtofailureofthebit.

Manymaterialsdonotrespondwelltocontinuedham-meringinoneplace.Thebreakertoolshouldbereposi-tioned on the work each time the tool penetrates butdoesnotcrackthematerial.

BLANK FIRINGTo understand “Blank Firing”, theoperatorneedstobeaware that if the toolbit isnotpressedagainst theworksurfacethetoolbitwilldropdowninthelowerbodycavityfarenoughsothatthepistoncannotstrikeit.Blankfiringoccurswheneverthebreakerisoperatingandthepistonisnotabletostrikethetoolbitsolidlyornotstrikethetoolbitatall.BlankFiringaccelerateswearandtearonbreakerandexcavatorcomponentsandmayresultinfailureofoneormorecomponents.Excessiveblankfir-ingmaybeconsideredequipmentabuseandmayresultinvoidingwarranties.Break-throughordifficultsurfacecontactresultsinblankfiringwhenthematerialbeingbrokenfracturesandthetoolbit isno longer in “hardcontact”with thematerialbutisstillpushedhighenoughinthelowerbodycavitysothatthepistoncanstrikeit.Inthiscondition,thepis-tonstrikesthetoolbitandthetoolbit,inturn,isdrivenagainsttheretainingpinsbecauseit isnotinsufficientcontactwiththematerialtobebroken.Theenergyisab-sorbedbytheretainingpins,otherbreakercomponents,andtheexcavatorboomcomponents.Blankfiringofthis

typecanbeexperienced in trenchworkwhereobtain-ingstrikingcontactwith theworksurface isdifficultorthewrongtoolbitisused,orinflatrockworkwheretheoperatorfailstostopoperationofthebreakerwhenslip-page,fracturingormaterialbreak-throughoccurs.Blankfiringasaresultofoperatorerroroccurswhenthetoolbitisnotincontactwiththeworksurfacetobebro-kenandisallowedtodropdowninthelowerbodycav-itysothatthepistonisnotabletostrikeit.Instead,thedownwardmovementofthepistonwillbestoppedbyaninternaloilcushionlocatedatthebottomofthepiston’sstrokeandtheenergyofthepistonwillbeabsorbedbybreakercomponentsandexcavatorboomcomponents.Blankfiringof this typecanbeexperiencedwhen theoperatorfailstostopoperationofthebreakerwhenthematerial fracturesormaterialbreak-throughoccurs,orduringre-positioningofthebreaker.Whileblankfiringcannotalwaysbeavoided, itcanbekepttoaminimumbyavoidingtheaboveconditionsasmuchaspossible.

PRYINGThis is the most common cause of tool failure. Evenwhenthereisnosurfacedamage,thestressfrompry-ingcaneasilybreakaworkingsteel.Thiskindoffailuregenerallyresultsfromanytypeofsidepressuresuchasanincorrectbreakingangleorfromusingthetooltore-positionmaterial.Thetoolshouldnotbeusedasapivotpointwhenrepositioningthecarrier.Thepowergener-atedbythecarrierwillfarexceedthestrengthofthetool.

TOOL FAILURE COVERED UNDER WARRANTYINTERNAL MATERIAL FLAWThisfailureoccurswhenaforeignmaterialisrolledintothesteelduringthemanufacturingprocess,causinganimperfectionintheinternalmaterialflawgrain.There-sultisaninherentweaknessinthetoolshankandeven-tualbreakage.Thefatiguefailureisstartedbythedefectswithinthetoolbit.Thebrokensurfaceexhibitsashellpatternaroundthestartingpointoffailure,likethatinthefatiguefailure.Theotherpartsofthebrokensurfacearebrittle.This is the only kind of tool bit failure that is always covered under warranty.

Lookforsurfacecracks,galling,orgougemarks.Breaksthatstartassurfacedamagehavea“seashell”pattern,withthedamagedspotatthecenter.Alarge“seashell”indicatesa slowgrowingbreak; a small one indicatesonecompoundedbysidestress.Stress failures start small, and spread into the centerof the steel. In a stress failure, the coarser the grain,thegreaterthestresswas,andthemorerapidwasthefailure.

MOILThisisbyfarthemostpopularworking steel. It is a generalpurpose point used to breakanythingfromconcretetohardrock. Its pencil-type point isused to fracture the material.Thetoolisbestwherepenetra-tionspeedisimportant.

CHISELThisstyleofpointisusedgen-erally used for trench work,whereacontrolledbreakisre-quired, and for rock breakingonmaterialswithadefinitelineof cleavage. A chisel bit alsoworkswell in softer concreteswhere a moil might penetratequickly, but not cause a frac-ture line.

BLUNTThisflattypeofpointisusedtobreak softer material such ascoal or shale. A moil or chisel willtendtopunchholesinthistype of material, where a flatblunt will shatter thematerial.It is also useful when break-ingirregularlyshapedmaterialwhere its broad tip makes iteasiertoposition.

Thetoolsrequiredtochargethebreakerareshownbe-low.The33464adapter and33300adapter assemblycanbeobtainedindividuallyorinakit(P/N33465).Notethattheadapterandadapterassemblyaredesignedtobe used with the 505232 charge hose assembly andthe 28257 accumulator tester which are used with other Stanley model breakers. When charging the breaker,makesurethetoolsandchargevalveareclean.Dirtcancontaminatethechargevalveandcauseleakage.1. Remove the protective plug from the accumulator

chargevalve.2. Screwtheadapterassembly(P/N33300)ontothe

tester(P/N28257)andtightenit.3. Holdthechuckendofthetesterandturnthegauge

fullycounterclockwisetoensuretheplungerinsidethechuckiscompletelyretracted.

4. Screw the tester into thebreaker chargevalvebyturning the chuck.Donot use the gauge for turn-ing as thiswill advance the plunger in the chuck.Tightenthechucklightlyagainstthebreakerchargevalve.

5. Turn the gauge clockwise to advance the plungeruntilapressure is indicatedon thegauge.Donotovertighten.

6. Ifthepressureiscorrect,unscrewthegaugetore-tracttheplunger.Then,loosenandremovethetes-terfromthechargevalve.Ifthepressureisnotcor-rect,proceedtoStep7.

NOTE: When disengaging the tester a "POP" of nitrogen is normal.7. Connect the charge hose assembly to the charg-

ingvalveonthetester.Makesurethevalveonthechargehoseassemblyisclosed.Openthevalveonthenitrogenbottle.

8. Veryslowlyopenthevalveonthechargehoseas-semblyandslowlymeterthenitrogenintothebreak-er charge valve until the tester reads the correctchargepressure.

9. When the correct pressure is obtained, close thevalveonthechargehoseassemblyandonthenitro-genbottle.Unscrewthegaugetoretracttheplung-er.Loosenandremove the tester fromthechargevalve.Beforereplacingtheprotectiveplug,inspecttheplugo-ring.Ifdamagedordeformed,replacethe plug.ApplyLoctite™242toplugandcap.

Recommended Tie Rod Torque Procedure

The torque values for TIE RODS NUTS in the above chart are intended to be used with a torque multiplier.

The following procedure is the recommended procedure for tie rod torque and may be tightened to the specified torque using the following procedure (see figure A & B ).

1. Threadtierodintolowernutbyhanduntilitbottomsout.Theninstalltheuppertierodnutandinstallallthewaydownuntilcontactsthetopofthemainaccumulator,thenholdtheuppernutfromturningandwithawrenchturnjustthetieroduntil ithasagapasshowninfigureBabove(0-1.5mm/0-0.059in.,topoftierodflushorjustbelowtopofuppertierodnut).

2. Pre-torquetheuppertierodnutsto360ft.lb./488Nmusingacrosspatternasshownintheillustrationattheleft.

4. It is the end usersresponsibilitytoensurethatthisprocedurewillworkwithhisspecifictypeofequipment.IfanadequateflowmeterisnotavailablecontactyourStanleyHydraulicDistributorforassistance.

TEST PROCEDURE1. Withtheauxiliarycircuit(orkit)completelyinstalled

connect the flowmeterbetween the tool inlet andoutlet hoses.

NOTE:Always use the hoses that are supplied for the at-tachment and make sure the machine hydraulic oil is between 90 to 120 °F. This will assure correct readings and adjustments.2. Withthemachinesettingatthemodethat’sgoingto

beusedtooperatetheattachmentrecordtheGPM_____.Locate the correct flow for the attachment in themanual under the specification section.Adjust themachinetothecorrectGPM.

NOTE:If possible, always set the machine to the highest GPM output mode. This will prevent the operator from over flowing the attachments.3. Once thecorrectGPMflow isachieved fullyopen

therestrictorontheflowmeter.4. With the machine in the attachment mode set in

step 2 record the back-pressure.At this point thepressurereadingonthepressuregaugeistheback-pressure in thecircuit.Thispressuremustnotex-ceed200psi/13.5bar.Excessiveback-pressurewillslowtheattachmentsoperation and lead to premature seal failures andoverheating.

Record the back-pressure psi.5. Closetherestrictorvalveontheflowmeteruntilthe

attachmentreliefstartstocrackoropen.Thereliefvalveopenswhentheflowrate(GPM),indicatedontheflowmeterbeginstodeclinerapidly.Locatethetoolsoperatingsystemreliefpressureinthespecifi-cationsectioninthemanual.Adjustattachmentre-lieftospecification.

NOTE:The relief valve pressure must be greater than the operating pressure of the attachment and three times the back-pressure. Never use the relief valve to control the flow rate in the circuit. Cracking pres-sure means the loss of 4 or more GPM.Record the relief cracking pressure psi.Example:Operationpressureofabreakeris2700psi.Back-pres-sure is150psi.Agoodrule to followwhensettingtherelief,multiplythebackpressureby3thenaddthisnum-bertotheoperationpressureoftheattachment.OperatingPressure 2700psiBack-pressure 450psiOperatingpressureofthetool 3150psiThereliefvalvesettingmustbegreaterthantheestimat-edoperatingpressureofthetool.Ifthesettingislower,damage to the circuitmay occur. Excess heatwill begenerated in the circuit which will damage the attach-ment and carrier.

HEAT LOAD TESTWith the installationkitproperly installedandadjustedpertheaboveprocedure,conducttheheatloadtestasfollows.1. Connect theflowmeterbetween the tool inletand

outlet hoses.2. With the carrier set in the attachment mode, re-

strict the flow meter until a pressure of 1000 psiis achieved. This pressure must be maintainedthroughout the heat test.

NOTE:Closing of the restrictor may be required as the tem-perature increases.Monitor the oil temperature from the flow meter untilnochangeisnoted.Recordthetimerequiredforoiltostabilize. Record the surrounding temperature (ambi-enttemperature).Recordthetimerequiredtostabilize minutes.Record the stabilized oil temperature °F.Record the ambient temperature °F.The“heatrise”iscalculatedasthestabilizedtempera-tureminustheambienttemperature.
