2.4 Testing

All power units are tested at thefactory and their flows and pressuresare recorded on the test report, which is shipped with the power unit.Testing of the power unit is notrequired unless it is damaged duringshipping.

Always perform “before startupprocedures” found in section 3.3before testing. PortaCo HydraulicTester, Part Number T-00016-XX-0is recommended for all tests.

a. Set the hydraulic circuit to “OFF.”b. Connect hydraulic hoses to the

power unit. Connect the PortaCoHydraulic Tester to the oppositeend of the hoses. Make sure flowdirection is correct.

c. Start the engine and allow thehydraulic fluid to warm to about100 F/38 C.

d. Open the tester restrictor valve(fully open.) This representsminimum load.

e. Set the flow control to “ON” andset engine throttle for maximumspeed.

f. Check the flow rate and pressureon the tester gauges. The backpressure reading should be under17.3 bar (250 PSI). The flowreadings should match thoselisted in section 1.1 GeneralInformation of this manual.

g. With engine throttle set atmaximum speed slowly close therestrictor valve on the tester whileobserving the flow pressuregauges.

h. As the hydraulic system reliefvalve begins to crack (open) andbypass fluid through the valve, the flow rate will begin to drop.At this time, the pressure in thesystem should be between 145-155 BAR (2100-2250 PSI).

i. If the pressure is not as specified, the hydraulic circuit relief valvemust be adjusted or replaced.(See section 4.2 for procedure.)

- If the flow rate drops below thespecified range, the pump orcontrol valve may be worn.

- If the flow remains constant, butpressure does not increase, therelief valve may be defective.

2.5 Adjustments

The engine RPM’s and the hydraulicsystem flow and pressure relief areset at the factory and must not bereadjusted. DO NOT changegovernor setting or tamper withgovernor components, which mayincrease the governed engine speed.

WARNING: OPERATING THEPOWER UNIT AT EXCESSIVESPEEDS INCREASE THE DANGEROF PERSONAL INJURY.

2.6 Hose Requirements

The Prowler series are easily movedclose to the job site. It is not oftennecessary or advisable to use longhoses. All hoses must have an oilresistant inner surface and anabrasion resistant outer surface. Each hose must have male pipeends for most application. Longerhoses can be used when necessary, but can affect the operation of theengine due to resistance in the hose.

If small diameter or long hoses areused, or if restrictive fittings areconnected to the supply and returnports, the pressure required, to pushthe fluid through the system andback to the tank will be higher. Thiswill reduce tool power.

The pressure and return hose areconnected to the control block. A ½-inch male pipe hose end can beconnected, to H.T.M.A. flat-nosedquick-disconnect couplings

(available through your PortaCo, Inc.dealer) can be used. (see fig. 2.6A)

The upper port of the control block isthe pressure (oil out) fitting. A maleH.T.M.A. quick-disconnect coupling(without lock ring) must beconnected to the tool end of thehose, which is connected to this port.

*Important – Oil should alwaysflow from the male couplerthrough the female coupler.

The lower port is the return port. Afemale H.T.M.A. quick-disconnectcoupling should be connected to thisport.

NOTE: The pressure increase inuncoupled hoses left in the sun maymake them difficult to connect. When possible after use, connect thefree ends of the operating hosestogether.

HOSE TYPES

Hydraulic hose types authorized foruse by PortaCo, Inc. is as follows:

1. Labeled and certified non-conductive2. Wire braided (conductive)3. Fabric braided (not certified or labeled

non-conductive)

Hose 1: Listed above is the only hoseauthorized for use near electricalconductors.

Hoses 2 and 3: Listed above are conductiveand must never be used near electricalconductors.

10

The rated working pressure of thehydraulic hose must be at least 175bar (2500 PSI.)

2.7 Tool Connecting Procedures.

Inspect hose for cuts, crushing, leaks, orabrasion which maybe a safety hazard orreduce fluid flows.

WARNING: DO NOTATTEMPT TO LOCATEHYDRAULIC LEAKS BY FEELINGAROUND HOSES AND FITTINGWITH HANDS.“PIN-HOLE” LEAKSCAN PENETRATE THE SKIN.

Stop the engine before connectingthe tool and, or hoses to the offpower unit, and when switchinghoses or tools. Turn the hydraulicon/off valve to the off position beforestarting the engine. Make sure allhose are connected for correct flowdirection to and from the tool beingused. When routing hose in thework area, position them wherepersonnel will not be at risk oftripping over them where vehiclescan run over the hoses. Do not layhose over sharp projects.

WARNING: PRESSURIZED FLUIDESCAPING FROM A DAMAGEDHOSE CAN PENETRATE THESKIN AND BE INJECTED IN THEBODY CAUSING INJURY ORDEATH.

CAUTION: DO NOT PULL ON HOSESTO DRAG POWER UNIT.

2.8 Work Area Safety Precautions

- Never operate the power unit in aclosed space. Inhalation of

engine exhaust can be fatal.- Keep clear of hot exhaust.- Do not use PortaCo hydraulic

3.0 OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS

3.1 Description of Power Unit

The PortaCo Prowler seriesHydraulic Power Unit has beendesigned for the purpose ofsupplying hydraulic fluid underpressure to power hydraulic handtools. PortaCo power units producea maximum pressure of 148 BAR(2150 PSI) and a maximum flow rateof 40 LPM (10 GPM) at 3500 RPMS.A petrol (gasoline) engine featuringand electric starter powers thePortaCo Prowler series power unit. The standard engine is a Briggs andStratton 16 hp V-twin Vanguard or18 hp V-twin Vanguard dependingon the model of power unitpurchased. See section 1.2 featuresof this manual for specifications. Seethe technical manuals supplied bythe engine manufacture includedwith this power unit for detailedtechnical specifications.

PortaCo Hydraulic Power Units havebeen designed for use indoors andoutdoors. Portaco power unitsshould not be operated under wetconditions, or at ambient operatingtemperatures, outside therecommended temperature range of-28 C to 43 C. (-20 F to 110 F).

The prowler series power unitsprovide the required flow andpressure to operate HTMA type 1,type 2, and type RR tools. OnlyOPEN-CENTER tools requiring 20,30, 40 LPM (5, 8, 10 GPM) and amaximum operating pressure of 138BAR (2,000 PSI) are to be used withthe Prowler series power units. See

section 1.1 General Information fordetail specifications on individualsmodels.

CAUTION: DO NOT USE CLOSED-CENTER TOOLS WITH THISPOWER UNIT.

During operation, the engine maybog, run at lower rpm, when underload. As the tool being used isloaded, meets with increaseresistance, the pressure required tooperate the tool increases. Theincreased pressure adds load to thepump which loads the engine thereby reducing the RPMS. As a result, the flow will drop as pressureincreases. The hydraulic system hasa pressure limiter set at 148 BAR(2150 PSI) which diverts the flowback to tank until the pressure dropsbelow 148 BAR (2150 PSI.)

Tools with higher flow and, orpressure requirements will notoperate at their full potential if usedwith the PortaCo Hydraulic PowerUnit. Tool with lower flow and, orpressure requirements may bedamaged if used with this power unit.

The engine throttle and the hydraulicsystem relief value are preset at thefactory and must not be altered forany reason without consultingPortaCo Inc. Any alterationsapproved by PortaCo Inc., can onlybe preformed by personnel qualifiedto maintain hydraulic systems.

throttle knob in press throttleknob until engine idles.

4) Allow engine to idle for 2 to 3minutes; then turn ignition “OFF”,rotate counter clockwise.

2) Disconnect the hoses from thepower unit pressure hose first.

Then disconnect hoses from thetool. When possible after use, connect the free ends of theoperating hoses together. Thepressure increase in uncoupledhoses left in the sun may make

them difficult to connect.3) Allow the hydraulic power unit to

cool down before enclosing in asmall area for transportation orstorage.

B. EMERGENCY SHUTDOWN

In the event of an emergency, suchas fire, immediately set the ignitionswitch to “OFF”. (Fig. 3.2J Arrow H)

3.7. Cold Weather Operation

Hydraulic fluids are thicker in coldweather; therefore, run the engine atlow idle long enough to bring thefluid temperature up to minimum of10°C/50 F or until the hydraulic tankfeels warm.

In cold weather, a cover over thecooler will allow faster warm-up.

3.8 Storage Preparation

To prepare the engine fortransportation or storage refer to theengine owner's manual. Remove theground cable from the battery.

To prepare the hydraulic system forstorage fill the hydraulic oil reservoirto the full mark, and check that thefill cap and filter are tight. Whenremoving from storage during a 3month or longer period, drain thewater from the hydraulic oil reservoir,if any condensation has occurred, and replace the hydraulic oil filter.(See section 4) This will remove anywater which, may have condensed inthe hydraulic oil reservoir duringstorage.
