Automated production line: Deep drawn steel sinksControlling the deep drawing process: The unique Hydraulico technology called Electronic Shimming™ ensures superior control of the blank hold during deep drawing – and significantly reduces scrap rates and increases uptime.

Slovenian company Kovinoplastika Loz, a long-time Hydraulico partner and customer, has received a new press for production of steel sinks.

The press has been installed into a complete, automated production line and is equipped with the newest Hydraulico technologies for deep draw-ing, including the world-renowned Electronic Shimming™ technology that ensures extremely precise control of the blank hold during the drawing process.

Hydraulico has custom-built the press to Kovinoplastika‘s specifications. It has a capacity of 1,000/750 tons in a double-acting press cycle, and the press table measures 2,200 x 1,500 mm.

Visions for the future: Hydraulico’s new leader teamAfter more than two decades as owner and CEO at Hydraulico, Torkild Salling has decided to hand over the reins to a new generation who is already mapping out the future of the company.

On January 1, 2009, a new CEO took the helm at Hydraulico. The appointment of Lars Ole Olsen, 42, is the final cornerstone in a succession process that has been in preparation for several months.

Lars Ole Olsen heads a new manage-ment team that includes Anders Hasager, Director for Global Sales and Marketing, Ole Ryom, Head of Technical Department, Jacob S. Jacobsen, Purchase and Logistics Manager, and Jens P. Riis, CFO.

The company’s dynamic CEO and chairman since 1987, Torkild Salling, has decided to make way for a new generation. Mr. Salling, however, will still be sharing his invaluable knowledge and experience as a member of the Board.

New perspectives, new challengesFor Lars Ole Olsen, it is business as usual as he eases into the position as new CEO. And then again, it’s not.

“There are great challenges ahead for all of us at Hydraulico,” he explains. “We have some very strong assets within

the company. Hydraulico employees are renowned for their knowledge and broad competences, we are very strong on development, service and delivery, and we have introduced several ground-break-ing technologies over the years. Now, we need to further strengthen our ability to develop and deliver advanced, customized solutions on tight time schedules.

In short, the strategy is to transform Hydraulico into a much more project-ori-ented business.”

A remarkable history of innovationFrom its foundation in 1946, the company had a strong focus on innovation, and under the leadership of Torkild Salling, Hydraulico has held a position as one of the technological front-runners in the industry – a transformation from a mere press builder to a leading process technology and equipment supplier.

The company was among the first to introduce Finite Element Analysis – dy-namic computer simulations of deep

drawing processes – which led to the invention of the unique Hydraulico tech-nology known as Electronic Shimming™.Through the last decade, the company has delivered advanced automated production solutions, among them an entirely new process technology for rail forging.

Dialogue and partnershipsThe new leader team at Hydraulico are very focused on continuous technologi-cal innovation – but also to creating even stronger relationships to customers and partners.

“Torkild Salling coined the slogan We Want Happy Customers – and those words are as true as ever,” says Lars Ole Olsen. “We want to take the dialogue with our customers further, listen carefully and respond effectively to them. At the same time, we are extending our co-operation with partners and third-party develop-ers, which enables us to deliver solutions in full compliance with the customers’ requirements.”

More information at www.hydraulico.com

Hydraulico’s engineers have for years

been investigating the specific problems

concerning the forging of rails used in the

switches.

With new travelling speeds at up to 300

km/hour (186 mph), reliable and robust

rail shaping is crucial to ensure smooth

and safe riding.

In Zhuzhou, China, a large production

plant for rail forging has been installed,

and Hydraulico experts are running test

productions.

Another plant has been built in Bhilai

Steel Plant in central India. The produc-

tion system features a 2,200 tons press,

forging tools, induction furnace, tool

change technology as well as equipment

for post-forging operations, such as a

straightening press, saw, etc.

A third production line at Beatty Balfour

Rail outside Nottinghan, UK, has been

running since 2006.

All installations have been “tailor-made”

solutions for the customers who all had

special needs and demands, including

specially developed dies and advanced

press technologies.

Robots do the handling

In rail forging, the heating process is the

most time-consuming part of the entire

operation. The pre-heating of a massive

iron rail requires a lot of energy – and

time.

In a Hydraulico solution, press opera-

tions can be finished in one cycle without

the need for re-heating, and production

cycles can be speeded significantly.

All handling operations – lifting, turning,

moving and feeding to the press is con-

ducted by groups of computer-controlled

manipulators – quickly and accurately.

This production concept can improve the

efficiency of the entire process and give

productivity gains of up to 1,000%.
