As we know, Lifts are the system designed

to help people transport from lower level to

    higher altitudes.

So, by hydro lifts we refer that by we can

make lifts that can be driven , using the

    potential energy of water.

    Source of Inspiration

There are many places, in the world, athigher altitudes famous for their scenicbeauty and sometimes for their religious

importance. These are mostly reachable through long

paths considering of hundreds of steps.

At such places, hydro lifts can be used beused if some naturally stored water ispresent there.

    Requirements

A horizontal tank, above which a coachwould be mounted.

The sitting capacity of the coach can be tothe max 10 persons at a time.

The tank capacity can be about 3 kilolitres.

Hence, the weight of the whole bodywould be approx. 2000 kg.

High strength ropes and pulley system.

Wheel & rail system, upon which the lifts

    will move.

    Mechanism Involved

    A simple flow system involved.

When one lift is placed at the top, it will be

    filled with water.

    Simultaneously, another lift which would

be at the bottom will be uploaded with

    passengers.

When the tank is sufficiently filled up in the

lift placed uphill, it will start descendingdownwards due to the involvement of

    potential energy of water.

At the same time the second lift, which isat the bottom will start moving upwards.

As, both these lifts would be connected

    with ropes to each other.

    The lifts would slowly roll

    down, and reach position

    B.

    Here, it would be

    unloaded and the water

    would be drained in a

    storage tank.

This would now go to pt

C where passengerswould be uploaded in it.

Same time the otherlift would reach Dunload passenger.

Now it will roll to Awhere it would befilled with water andhence ready to godownhill.

Again the same cyclewould be repeated.

    Materials

    1)ROPE:

The different rope materialswith their strengths aregiven below-

    Cast Steel1134MPaPlow Steel1400MPa

    Alloy steel1535MPa

    From these varieties, the

one having highperformance andpermissible cost can bechosen.

    2) Coach and tank.

The coach and tank should be made of

steel, as they must be corrosion resistant.

As, steel is a high strength material and

since is required to bear high load.

    Rails would have to

    be laid down, as on

    them the wheels will

roll. Fig shows the rail and

    wheel system.

    Dimensional Analysis

Rope size applied in this process will be

6x7 (i.e. rope made of six strands and eachstrand containing seven wires).

Drum size, as recommended, should beabout 72d(where d= dia of rope).

But in worst case should be min. of 42d.Four sets of pulleys will be fixed. Two at

the bottom and two at the top (as in fig.)

    Continued

The tank size sufficient to store about 3

kilo liters of water can be of 3 cu meters

    volume .

The coach which is for the seating of

passengers, can be of dimensions 3x2

    sqm.

    Safety Measures

The friction in the pulleys has to be keptvery high. Due to this the lift wont get overspeeded.

The braking has to be very good at allcost, because the lift coming from above

will be having a high amount of energystored and it can get out of control.

For this automatic braking system, which

comes into act as the permissible speed

of lift is overtaken, can be used.

Or else a responsible person sitting inside

    can operate the brake.

    Benefits

The whole system in all respects is

    completely environment-friendly.

No danger of pollution, since energy used

drive the lift is generated with water.

There is no loss of energy during its

    conversion in different forms.

    No contamination in energy.

The water which would be brought down in lifts,

can be used by the people in the vicinity.

    This project can provide employment

opportunities for persons from nearby area.

When some person are willing to come downfrom hill through lifts, then the amount of water

to be carried can be lowered in accordance with

    the no. of passengers.

    Weaknesses

    The process is quite slow.

Someone has to be employed to check

the filling of water, braking system.

    Risk involved.

    Conclusion

The mechanism involved is quite simple,

can be easily employed. High energy

    conversion is provided. No pollution.

Provides help to persons who may berequiring the water the water which is

    present uphill.
