• Vacuum Control Valve should be checked and set at each startup – typical setting is roughly -22” Hg Vacuum Chamber.
• Variable Speed is Controlled by Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) located within the control panel.
• All motors have a VFD so no changed in motor rotation will occur at each startup.
• A VFD is also a soft start for all motors and they also provide superior motor protection.
• VFDs are set to Motor Name Plate Full Load Amps for superior motor protection.

What is Varnish?
Varnish is the thin, insoluble film deposit that forms on fluid-wetted surfaces inside a turbine lube system, including bearings and servo valves. The material is comprised of a wide range of oil additives and high molecular weight thermo-oxidative fluid breakdown compounds that have limited solvency in the base fluid. These compounds are polar in nature and begin to migrate from the base fluid to the wetted surfaces over time, based on the system and fluid conditions and their polar affinities.
How is Varnish Removed from Oil?
• Varnish is removed by Ion Bonding Resin.
• Ion Bonding Resin is commonly used in Water Purification, Bio-Diesel Production and Food and Beverage Industries -mainly for the removal of unwanted impurities.
• Ion Bonding Resin removes dissolved and undissolved Varnish by an Adsorption Process.
• Adsorption is the adhesion of atoms, ions or molecules from a gas, liquid or dissolved solid to a surface material.
• Our Surface Material is Resin Beads and they are 0.25 mm to 0.5 mm in diameter.
• Resin Beads are Porous and have a large surface area to trap and hold unwanted impurities within fluids.
• Select Resins are used to Capture Varnish within Oil.
Ion Bonding Resin
• Resin Beads are Porous and have a large surface area to trap and hold unwanted impurities or varnish within fluids.
• The Resin is placed in our Pre-Filter Assembly and held in a tight matrix with 50 micron downstream support filtration media.
• Our 50 micron downstream support media prevents any spherical bead migration.
• Bonding Resin is Inert and Chemically Compatible with all standard Lube and Hydraulic Oils.
• Operating Pressure up to 150 PSI and Temperatures up to 250 F.

MEMBRANE PATCH COLORIMETRY (MPC)Description of Test: The process of making a patch isolates and agglomerates insoluble by-products associated with varnish. The color of the membrane patch provides a guideline as to the extent of varnish potential. Generally a value over 35 is considered abnormal, < 20 Advise Fluid Monitoring and < 15 in good condition.

Varnish Absorption System Recommendations.
VAS Systems are designed to maintain MPC (<35) and are intended to be a solution for keeping systems stable and not enabling Varnish to get our of control. It is important to know that systems with severe varnish in oil and severe internal varnish plating, might require a complete system oil flush, oil sweeting and tank cleaning prior to operation. All filtration solutions require understanding your application and having the proper fluid analysis data.
Hydrocarbon Filtration can Partner with TF Huggins to help provide long-term and cost effective Varnish Contamination Solutions.
