Hymn 35

Awake, O Eternal!

Verse 1

Before me I constantlysee my disgrace;

And shame and confusionhave covered my face;

At sound of the taunters and scoffers’ delight;

Their hearts full of hate and revengeful despite.

Verse 2

Though all these sore evilshave been our sad lot,

Our God and His cov’nantwe have not forgot;

Our hearts turned not backand our feet

have not strayed,

Tho’ broken mid jackalswith death for our shade.

Verse 3

If we have forgottenthe name of our God,

Or unto some idolour hands spread abroad,

Shall not thee Almighty who sees all within,

And knows the heart’s secrets, discover this sin?

Last Verse

Yea, all the day longfor Thy sake

we’re consumed

Like sheep for the slaughter,

to death we are doomed;

Awake, O Eternal,and sleep Thou no more;

Arise and our helpcast not off evermore.
