New Clinical Director for North and East Yorkshire and Northern Lincolnshire CLRN Dr Alison Layton was appointed as new Clinical Director of NEYNL CLRN on 1 September. Dr Layton has

been actively involved in the CLRN as Co-Director supporting the previous post holder, Professor Lindsay

Turnbull.

Dr Layton is a Consultant Dermatologist, Trust R&D Lead and Associate Medical Director of Research at

Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust. She has acted as CI and PI in many clinical trials embracing

inflammatory dermatoses and is a member of the UK Dermatology Clinical Trials Network steering group.

She is also involved in basic science research investigating immunological and microbiological aspects of acne.

Preparing Investigator Sites and Research & Development Departments for GCP

Inspections (for the UK)

This course is for all non-commercial sector professionals working on trials subject to GCP

inspection by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA). This one-day

introductory/ intermediate level course is offered in 2 parts. The morning session concentrates on

organisational issues arising within R&D departments and therefore all categories of R&D staff are

strongly recommended to attend. The afternoon session concentrates on issues specific to

investigator sites and all members of the site staff as well as pharmacists and lab staff will find this of

benefit. R&D staff should attend the full day as they will need to help and advise site staff prepare for

Society for Applied Microbiology – New Lecturer Research Grant ◙

This grant is for newly appointed lecturers in their first permanent academic appointment in a

Higher Education Institute, to pump-prime their microbiological research. Applicants should be

Hearing Health Care ◙

This programme supports research leading to accessible and affordable hearing health care. The

overarching emphasis is on the acquisition of knowledge that can be rapidly translated into new

or enhanced approaches for access, assessment or interventions with a goal to delivering better

hearing health care outcomes.

Neurobiology of Migraine ◙

These grants are for innovative research that will expand current knowledge of neurobiological

mechanisms underlying migraine headache, examine the role of neuromodulators, genetic and

environmental influences in migraine susceptibility, and explore new targets for therapy

development.

Neuroscience Research on Drug Abuse ◙

These grants are to fund research to aid the understanding of the neurobiological mechanisms

underlying all phases of drug addiction, including drug withdrawal and relapse, as well as the

effects of pharmacological treatments aimed at curbing substance use. Research utilising basic,

translational, or clinical approaches would be appropriate.

National Institute Allergy and Infectious Diseases/National Institute of Mental Health –

Endocannabinoid Signaling in Alcohol Consumption, Intoxication and Alcohol Use

Disorders ◙

This programme supports the study of the roles and underlying mechanisms of endocannabinoid

signalling in alcohol preference, consumption, intoxication and alcohol use disorders, and to explore

endocannabinoid signalling system as potential targets for alcohol pharmacotherapy.

Strategies for Treatment of Young Adults with Alcohol Use Disorders ◙

This programme supports new research on the treatment of young adults (18 to 25 years of age)

with alcohol use disorders.

Behavioural Regulation Mechanisms of Alcohol Dependence and Related Phenotypes ◙ The purpose of this programme is to promote research to study how chronic and acute alcohol

consumption affect behavioral regulation processes; how these effects lead to propensity to

develop alcohol dependence, and the influence of genetic and environmental factors on

behavioral regulation processes contributing to risk for alcoholism.

Impact of Clinical Trials in Africa ◙

The purpose of this grant is to gain comprehensive insight into the impact of clinical trials on health

services in sub-Saharan Africa, especially with regard to the quality of those services delivered to

women and/or children. Emphasis should be placed on evaluating the impact from the perspective of

patients; health professionals; the community; and public health services at the sites where the

clinical trials are being conducted. The project should be designed so that the outcome could

contribute to the development of methods to further embed clinical research within the health
