    Terazosin (hytrin)

    Classification: Antihypertensives, peripherally acting anti-adrenergics

    Indication (Use): Mild to moderate hypertension (alone or with other agents) Urinary outflow

    obstruction, in pts /c prostatic hyperplasia

    Normal dosage: Adult ~ PO Hypertension~1mg initially, then slowly increased up to 5mg/day

    (usual range 1-5mg/day); may be given as single dose or in 2 divided doses (not to exceed

    20mg/day) Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia~1 mg at bedtime; gradually may be increased up to 5

    mg/day

    Side Effects: CNS: H/A, dizziness, weakness, drowsiness, nervousness EENT: nasal

    congestion,blurred vision, conjunctivitis, sinusitis CV: first-dose orthostatic hypertension,

    arrhythmias, chest pain, palpitations, peripheral edema, tachycardia GI: abd pain, diarrhea,nausea, dry mouth, vomiting GU: ED, urinary frequency RESP: dyspnea Derm:pruritus

    Metab: weight gain Ms: arthralgia, back pain, ext. pain Misc: fever

    Nursing implications: Monitor B/P lying and standing, P. frequently during initial dose, Assess

    for first-dose orthostatic reaction and Chk frequency of Rx refill to ensure compliance, Monitor

    V/S q 5-15 min during and /p drug admin, Monitor I/O and daily weight esp at the beginning of

    therapy.

    Patient teaching: Explain the purpose of the medication; thoroughly explain possible side

    effects and what adverse reaction to looks for, contact Primary care provider (PCP) if any

    questions or concerns. No double doses, weight checks biweekly and assess feet and hands for

    fluid retention, may cause dizziness or drowsiness, call PCP prior to taking any cold or cough

    medicine.
