Brilliant Young Entrepreneurs

Objectives and Vision Hyundai and JA-YE Europe have launched an initiative that will help the young European business leaders of tomorrow turn their dreams into reality. Through the “Brilliant Young Entrepreneurs” initiative Hyundai will provide financial support to those participants developing business plans with strong potential to become ‘real’ businesses. 15 Start-Ups from 14 participating

countries will have the opportunity to benefit from the investment provided by Hyundai. In the first year of implementation 14 Start-up will be supported through the BYE initiative across Europe.

The context: JA-YE Start-Up Programme BYE operates in the frame of the JA-YE Start-Up Programme, the flagship initiative for the graduate level. The programme aims at providing a real entrepreneurial learning experience for students aged 19 and up as well as equipping them with skills and knowledge to develop their own ventures/enterprises/endeavors. 15 countries today (Belgium (Flemish and French part), Bulgaria, Denmark, Finland, France, Lithuania, Macedonia, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Slovakia, Spain and UK1) + opening 5 more in the coming year (Germany, Italy, Poland, Greece and Sweden) Start-Up Programme is implemented in more than 100 universities across Europe involving 20,000 students.

Students form JA-YE Start Up Companies, chartered by JA-YE develop statutes, a Board of Directors, sell shares, create a management team, develop business plans, implement them, & liquidate the company.

1 Russia will be the only country not involved in BYE activities since it is out of HME geographical scope.

Page 5: Hyundai bye-interim report-july-2013 - Talentdepo

The figure on the left presents the seven steps divided into ten “Core Activities” and provided to guide the development and operation of the JA-YE Start Up company.

Every Start-Up group has a a volunteer business coach or mentor. The Start Up Programme can be embedded in the curriculum or run as an extra activity at the institution.

The final phase of the programme is participation in the national or Europe-wide competition which includes presentations to investors, business angels and venture capitalists. Studies on past-participants show that 15% will go on to start their own business. The focus of the Start-Up programme is on the concept development, entrepreneurial experience, working with mentors, building a team and a go-tomarket strategy and getting to a final stage of launching the enterprise. Investment at this moment is critical, but it is also the most difficult financing to get. Often, this stage needs support for further work toward the development of the prototype (product, process or service). On the other hand, this early stage investment does not need to be huge to make a difference. Itcan range from 15 000 to 25 000 Euros as some of the SEED Capital Funds (under JEREMIE Program of the EU) are doing. The investment could combine financial and mobility support. The Brilliant Young Entrepeneurship Initiative focus on giving financial and mentoring support to those participants developing business plans with strong potential in becoming real businesses.

Page 6: Hyundai bye-interim report-july-2013 - Talentdepo

The European BYE award The European BYE Award is a separate competition from the National BYE Awards. The European BYE Award competition will happen during the JA-YE European Enterprise Challenge, the European Competition of the Start-Up Programme.

The Enterprise Challenge Competition JA-YE Members in Europe have a long tradition of organising events that bring students together from across the continent. These events created a mutual focus for participating members and gave them a fantastic opportunity to bring staff, supporters, volunteers, and especially young people all together at the same time and place. All around the continent The unique aspect of these events is that they are rotating from member to member. These are events which are understood to be a meeting place for the network and a theatre for its achievements. That is why JA-YE members have always insisted that the event should be under the name “JA-YE Europe” and it has always been JA-YE members as a group that have made the collective decision about who will have the privilege to host the event on behalf of the others. The Host Hosting the events has become a matter of pride and opportunity as much as solidarity. Host members can show others what they have achieved; they can bring important recognition to their supporters as well as create interesting new fundraising opportunities; finally they take their turn to “give back” and welcome the rest of the European family to their “country” as their peers did before them. Thus the events were never seen as just a member affair, though of course they always brought with them a local flavour; instead they were seen as special moments during the year when individual members could demonstrate that they are part of a larger network. The events have had another benefit, which has been to maintain the strength and quality of the programs on the ground. Without these events, programs like the START UP Programmme would likely have been hugely divergent from one member to the next. Growth in these programs would also not have been as strong. By maintaining a European dimension to our programs, through such events which everyone joined and shared experiences, the network was able to keep a certain degree of consistency and unity. These events are a crucial part of what sustains our network, maintains program quality and assures growth. They are also a powerful way to motivate teachers, staff, sponsors, board members and volunteers as well as keep all of us in closer personal touch with each

Page 11: Hyundai bye-interim report-july-2013 - Talentdepo

other. They are the platform that we use to communicate our message to policy-makers, business leaders and government. Furthermore these events give students what may be one of their first opportunities to interact with their peers from many other places. So, these events have significant direct and indirect benefits to everyone in the network. In 2013 the Enterprise Challenge is hosted by the National French Belgian Organisation, Les Jeunes Entreprises, in Liege next 3rd and 4th of July.
