Raymond J. Bouska was a native of Howard County having been born on a farm near Creso on October 14, 1901, the youngest child of Frank R. and Grace Siebiaka Bouska. He attended rural school and then engqed in farming. On February 23, 1925 he and Grace Drew wert married at the Cathedral of St. Raphael in Dubuque, Iowa. Grace was the daughter of Michael J. and Mary J ane Suton Drew of Decorah, Iowa. She W8.lI a teacher in the a rea. T wo child ren were born, Pearl Marie and Paul Anthony. Later , on moving to Cresco, Ray was employed u a harness maker and a e1erk in the Kalishek Hardware ltore for many years, then for Howard County as a dynamiter and later on building bridges. He worked at Goodrich and Searcy and then served the City of Cresco as Street Commissioner for several years. He returned to farming in 1948. T he family lived south­west of Cresco, ROuth of Cresco, later at Ridgeway, Iowa and then moved to Canton, Minne!lOta where the parents, Ray and Grace, passed away in lati'l r years. Pearl was em­ployed in the business office of St. Joeeph Mercy Hospital in Cresco, Iowa and, having resigned there, was employed by Peter F. Kepros, M.D. in his office at the Cresco Medical Clinic until the loca1 doctore joined together to fo rm the Cresco Medical Center, P .C. where ahe ia presently employed. Paul worked at the Fillmore County Nursery a t Canton, Minnesota for eight yeara and then at HECO in Harmony, Minneflota for five years. He returned to farming at the t ime of his fa ther 's death, an occupation in which he is pre~ently engaged at Canton. Raymond had one brother, Edward J . and two siaten., Jessie Bouska Sebastian and Helen Bouska Murtagh, all of whom are deceased. Grace came from a family of eight, deceased memben are William Drew of Ridgeway and Francis M. Drew of Decorah, her brothen, and a sister Catherine Drew of Decorah. Living members are her sisters, Genevieve M. McCabe of S1. Paul, Minnesota, who is in

excellent health at age 92, Bea Drew of Decorah, Loretta Mitchell of Lime Springs, and Lucy Drew of Decorah.

John and Clara Brockmeyer and their three daughters, Wilma, Lois and Zeida, moved to a 130 acre farm in Howard Center township, Howard County, Iowa, March 1, 1932, from Colesburg, Delaware County, Iowa..

John Brockmeyer

John was in the group that succeeded in getting REA to Howard County and his waa one of the first farlI18 on the western edge of Howard Center to be electr ified.

He served on the County Farm Bureau board fo r many yeartl and waa among the fint county stock holders in the Farm Bureau Insurance Company.

He was instrumental in getting the Howard County E,perimental Farm organized and operating.

He was involved in the organiution of the Farm Service Co-op (now C& H Farm Ser­vice).

He served two terms as Howard County representative in the Iowa State Legislature in Del Moines.

Hi! fi rst year in Howard County, when he planted corn on hia farm, well meaning neighbors laughed aaying he couldn't grow corn, but he had a good crop and continued to raise corn crops with proper fertilizen 81

recommended by the Iowa State EItension Service offi ce.

He was8 veteran ofWWI serving in Europe and was a long t ime member of the Lloyd L. Horton Legion Post in Lime Springs, Iowa.

He served in the Lime Sprinp Methodist Church in varioWi way..

John and Clara moved to Cresco after sell ing their farm to Roger Foote who recent­ly 80ld it to the Exchange State Bank of Lime Springs. T hey lived in Creacountill980 when they enterta ined the Pleall8.ll tville Care Cen­ter , Pleasantville, Iowa.

Clara died in October, 1982 and J ohn in July, 1984. Both refit in the Howard Center township Cemetery.

For &Ome years J ohn and Clara were partners with their daughter, Loi. and Wil­liam DeJoorle, on the farm raising hybrid hog8. Some years later, daughter, Wilma and Harmon Hinners, operated a grade A (bulk milk) dairy in partnership with her parena.

The daughters are now located _ Wilms in Brush, CO; Lois in Pleua.ntville, Iowa and Zeida Clark in Mesa, AZ.

BRONNER, JOHN FAMILY

John Bronner, wi th hia brothers, emigrated from Germany in the 1850'1. He homesteaded a fa rm in Albion T ownship. On June 15, 1861 he was married to Mary Dempewolf, who also emigrated from Hanover, Germany. She Will

born July 30, 1843, and lived Wltil April, 1910. This young couple resided and farmed the lame place al l their marr ied life. Thia farm ia Itill in the Bronner family, now occupied by their four th and fifth generation, Mr. and Mrs. Brent Bronner and two daugh. ters, Sarah and Robyn.

Mr. and Mn. John Bronner were regular attendants and membere of the original Zion Evangelical Church; which ia now Zion United MethodiSL It is located scrOllS the road from their farm. Their first home waa a log cabin built near a apring south of the present dwelling. As their family grew, a ' larger home was required. Then a two-story was built nearer the rOlld . This had to be replaced, too.
