2011 Ray Anderson
passed away from cancer. He did not
get to see the full fruition of his third
child, Interface, Inc., reaching Mission Zero.
Rays family went to the Georgia Conservancy with an idea to make the Ray C. Anderson Memorial Interstate Highway have zero environmental impact and embody his legacy.
2012Ray C. Anderson Foundation established to embody shared values and legacy that he left behind.
1973After working for Miliken for approximately 14 years, Ray resigned and began a partnership with
1966The psychological journey toward entrepreneurship for Ray begins. The will for independence in his career spurs from being passed for a promotion.
1969Ray is first exposed to carpet tiles. He fell in love with the idea and realized the necessity of the modular tiles in office design.
2009Confessions of a Radical Industrialist is published chronicling Rays journey up to and in the process of Mission Zero.

Mission Zero stresses a closed loop system that maintains productivity while replenishing the resources used without damage to the environment. Mission Zero is divided into 7 separate efforts.

Anderson defined waste as any cost that doesnt improve value, including misdirected orders and bad debts.
Anderson defined stakeholders broadly. He aimed to sensitize both customers and employees.
Anderson wanted to redesign commerce, whether by changing his own company, his contractors and suppliers, or other businesses.
Anderson said increasing efficiency is like lightening your backpack for the climb up the mountain.
Plants should function like plants; Interface imitated natures way of turning waste into useful material.
For Interface this meant commuting logistics, plant siting, and working with truckers.
The goal is to release increasingly benign emissions, working up the supply chain.
