When cloud chambers are used to study cosmic rays or other parti- cles, the curtains, clouds, and precipitation that tend to form in the chamber are simply a source of annoyance to the experimenter. For Father Luger and Dr. Hidy, these phenomena are the principal object of interest. They are studying the role of condensation nuclei, such as the ions along the particle paths, in the formation of clouds and pre- cipitation. Staff Notes

No. 66September 22, 1967

Father Paul Luger, of the Physics Department of Seattle University, recently arrived at the NCAR Laboratory to begin a one-month visit with

George Hidy. With him he brought a rather unusual piece of lugg-ge, a

diffusion cloud chamber.

During his stay at NCAR, Father Luger will be using the chamber ina series of cloud experiments. When the cloud chamber is in operation, methanol vapor is released inside the chamber, and mechanical refriger-

ation is used to create a supersaturated condition. Any high-energy

subatomic particle that passes through the chamber will leave a trail of

ions along its path, and in the supersaturated environment these ions

act as condensation nuclei for droplets of methanol. A bright light is

used to make the path of the particle visible by illuminating the trail

of droplets.

When cloud chambers are used to study cosmic rays or other parti-cles, the curtains, clouds, and precipitation that tend to form in the

chamber are simply a source of annoyance to the experimenter. For

Father Luger and Dr. Hidy, these phenomena are the principal object of

interest. They are studying the role of condensation nuclei, such as

the ions along the particle paths, in the formation of clouds and pre-

cipitation.

NCAR staff members who are interested in the cloud chamber are in-vited to pay Father Luger a visit in room 047.

Technical Note NCAR-TN-32, Technical Control of Balloon Packages, byErnie Lichfield and Neil Carlson, is now available from the publicationsdepartment. If you want a copy, send a note to Kay Redman. The Summer1967 issue of Balloon Flight Record and Scheduled Balloon Flights, whichwas formerly published in Facilities for Atmospheric Research and now isissued as a separate publication, is also available. If you want a copyof this one, drop Kay a note and also let her know if you want your nameplaced on the list to receive future issues.

The Computing Facility has acquired a computer data set containing168 monthly mean analyses of Pacific Ocean sea surface temperatures forthe period 1949 through 1962. These analyses, from the Bureau of Commer-cial Fisheries, are on a grid that covers the area north of 20*S. Forfurther information contact Roy Jenne, extension 526.

New telephone extensions: John Kennedy - 280, Valerie Flick - 281,Anne (Scott) Garrelts - 285, Bob Brown - 515, and Vonda Giesey - 516.

If you would be interested in forming an NCAR soccer team or teams, contact Dave Houghton at extension 676 or Dick Canfield at HAO exten-sion 47.

The NCAR supply room has an assortment of furniture items availablefor use. If you can use either a four, six, or twelve hat capacity coatrack, a two drawer combination safe, swivel, straight, or student typechairs, a small table or large wastebasket, go down to room 42 and takeyour pick.
