I am IrelandI am Ireland:I am older than the Old Woman of Beare.

Great my glory:I that bore Cuchulainn the valiant.

Mise ire, meaning I Am Ireland, is an Irish language poem by P.H. Pearse, poet, teacher, a central figure in the 1916 Easter Rising and one of the authors and signatories of the Proclamation.

In the poem, the first two verses of which are presented here, Pearse personifies Ireland as an old woman.

The Ireland 2016 Centenary Programme, led by Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Heather Humphreys, T.D., is a year-long programme of activity to commemorate the events of the

1916 Rising, to reflect on our achievements over the last 100 years and to look towards Irelands future.

The aim of the Ireland 2016 Centenary Programme, which was launched on 31st March 2015, is to have a rich diversity of programmes and events which will run throughout 2016, to commemorate the centenary of the 1916 Easter Rising.

The programme is an inclusive invitation to everyone on the island of Ireland and to the global community, to shape and engage in a diverse range of historical, cultural and artistic activities, designed to facilitate reflection, commemoration, celebration, debate and analysis and an active imagining of our future.

The programme is divided into seven strands: State Ceremonial, Historical Reflection, An Teanga Bheo, Youth and Imagination, Cultural Expression, Community Participation, Global and Diaspora.

The strands will be measured and reflective, informed by a full acknowledgement of the complexity of historical events and their legacy, the multiple readings of history, and the multiple identities and traditions which are part of the Irish historical experience. The Culture Ireland International Culture Programme for 2016 forms part of the Global and Diaspora strand. The Global and Diaspora programme is an invitation to the global Irish family and friends of Ireland, from all over the world, to join us in remembering, reflecting and re-imagining Irelands future.

On 24th April 1916 at the General Post Office in Dublin, P.H. Pearse, one of the key figures in the 1916 Easter Rising, read the Proclamation setting out the vision for an Irish Republic. This was the moment when Irish nationalism joined forces with a revolutionary, cultural and language movement on a journey towards self-determination. Pearse, a poet and a writer is representative of the pivotal role artists played in 1916 and over the past centenary in the shaping of Irish society.

It is for our artists and their talents that Ireland is known globally. Ireland has been home to many creative geniuses whose work is known worldwide and for 2016 the Irish Government is committed to a special programme to share globally the treasures created by our artists. Culture Ireland has planned the 2016 international programme, I am Ireland, inspired by the opening line of one of Pearses poems, Mise ire. I am Ireland speaks of a contemporary Ireland, of young and established artists, influenced by Irelands geographic position, history and cultural journey over the past one hundred years.

Throughout 2016, Irish artists will present in international festivals and venues with a special focus in

key territories United States, Great Britain, Canada and Australia with which Ireland has strong ties. In many of these places Irish culture has thrived through the commitment of Irish emigrants to maintaining

and enriching our traditions. Irish arts continue to evolve, inspired by the legacy of the past, created by the imagining of our future. The interest in Irish artistic excellence continues to grow internationally. 2016 offers the opportunity to build on Irelands cultural connections and share many special and diverse events with audiences around the world.

The Ireland 2016 Centenary Programme will be a highlight of a decade of commemorations, a platform for Ireland to reflect, engage and commemorate this significant period of history which shaped our nation and our future. We in Ireland wish to encourage global participation in our celebrations. We invite you to join with us and our artists to mark this historic occasion through the arts and the inspiring programme I am Ireland.

    B linn.

The Irish Film Board commissioned a once-off initiative to fund a number of short films commemorating, celebrating and ruminating on 1916 and how the events of Easter Monday and beyond forged the landscape of the following century. Filmmakers were invited to give their response to 1916 and the hundred years since. The nine selected films are a mixture of live action, animation and documentary. these short films will be shown internationally throughout 2016.
