Voiced for the Voiceless

“I am here to speak for all generations to come. I am here to speak on behalf of the starving children around the world whose cries go unheard.”

Equity (fairness/ sharing)– Intra-generational (Starving/ poor/ marginalized …)

– Inter-generational (Future generations … the environment)

In this orange tree, there are many ripe oranges and branches hanging down. Two oranges are enough for me and my sister. We are not naughty children, who pick all the oranges

Economics

Arthur Okun – “The Big Trade-Off”

Market economic institution, with efficiency as their guiding principle, create disparities among citizens in living standards and material welfare.

Disparities could be reduced through economic instrument … by government.

Politics Intra-generational equity

Democracy– Rich and the poor has a

vote each (equal/fair) Keneth Arrow (1951) Social

Choice and Individual Values Nobel prize 1972 Impossibility theorem

Religion

The Anguttara Nikaya (A.iv,236) enumerates the following eight motives for dhana (sharing):[

– To offend the recipient,.– Due to fear of person or future.– In return for a favor.– Hope of getting a favor.– To gain a good reputation– Giving is considered good.– Altruistic motives.– Beautify the mind.

In Islam, zakat or the giving of alms, is the fourth of the five pillars of Islam. It is obligatory to give away 2.5% of ones savings and business revenue, as well as 5-10% of ones harvest, to the poor.

Page 17: I am only a child

Modern philanthropist

Care for the poor makes you happy (once you are super rich/ Maslow’s theory)– Bill Gates pledged to leave his £30billion fortune to

charity... rather than his children

Sunday OBSERVER, 25 January 2004   FeaturesNo more 'failures?'

"Professionals for the Nation" recently held a multi-disciplinary seminar at the University of Peradeniya. Below is an edited version of the address by Prof. H. Kotagama, Chairman, Vocational Training Authority of Sri Lanka on his vision and plans for vocational training, in dealing with the large numbers of students who are left out of the university system.

*** Throughout my career, I have been working with 'failures'. My mission has been to

try and provide fairness to 'failures' as an environmental economist and also as the Chairman of the Vocational Training Authority. This subject of environmental economics is rather a new subject, developed in the past two decades, and it is a reaction to the realisation that the environmental conservation is important and necessary for the substance of humanity.
