I am pleased to have joined 1000 Friends of Florida atthe end of a great year capped off by an amazing 75 percent of Florida voters approving Amendment 1,Florida’s Water and Land Conservation Amendment.1000 Friends is proud to be a founding member of theAmendment 1 Coalition.

In the 2014 legislative session, 1000 Friendssuccessfully advocated for increased funding forEverglades restoration, springs protection andaffordable housing, and helped stop damaging bills toundermine community planning and weakenenvironmental regulations. Post session, we helpedconvince the Florida Department of EnvironmentalProtection to scrap an ill-conceived plan to sell offstate-owned conservation lands.

1000 Friends continued playing a major role inregional planning, leading efforts to stop HendryCounty’s controversial Sugar Hill Sector Plan whichcould have had devastating effects on the Everglades.We partnered with local organizations to supportpositive planning and conservation amendments toMartin County’s Comprehensive Plan.

Continuing our long traditionof legal advocacy, 1000Friends filed a circuit courtchallenge to halt theinappropriate Minto Westdevelopment proposed forrural Palm Beach County.

Our popular Dr. John M.DeGrove Community StewardWebinar Series reached closeto 900 Floridians on essential issues including sealevel rise, complete streets and ethics.

• Retained conservation advocate Ryan Smart to serveas 1000 Friends of Florida’s new President.

• A founding supporter and ongoing advocate for theFlorida Water and Land Legacy, Amendment 1, whichpassed in November of 2014 with support from anoverwhelming 75 percent of Florida voters,incorporating into the state Constitution dedicatedfunding for the purchase of conservation lands.

• Honored Lee Constantine, a current Seminole CountyCommissioner and former Florida State Representativeand Senator, with 1000 Friends of Florida’s BillSadowski Award, its highest honor, for his “leadership,vision and on-going commitment to conservation andwater resource protection in Florida.”

• Successfully helped advocate before the 2014 FloridaLegislature for $259.6 million for Everglades and relatedrestoration projects, $30 million for springs projects, andmore.

• Also during the 2014 legislative session, successfullyled efforts to halt harmful planning and environmental

bills that would have damaged springs and wetlandsand undermined local government planning authority.

• Provided extensive data instrumental in convincing theFlorida Department of Environmental Protection toscrap its controversial plan to sell $50 million of state-owned conservation lands.

• Actively participated in numerous statewide andregional conservation coalitions including the FloridaForever Coalition, Amendment 1 Coalition, FloridaCoastal and Ocean Coalition, Clean Water Action, andothers.

• Continued advocating for springs protection, workingwith the Florida Conservation Coalition and to developworkable springs protection planning strategies.

• Partnering with the Wakulla Springs Alliance, Friends ofWakulla Springs and others, successfully defeated aproposal by Tallahassee Community College to leaseapproximately 2000 acres within Wakulla Springs StatePark for an educational complex including a 60-site RVand tent campground on the shores of the fragileCherokee Sink.

• Serving as an appointee of Governor Rick Scott on theEast Central Florida Corridor Task Force, Policy DirectorCharles Pattison successfully advocated for inclusion ofsound conservation and planning principles into thegroup’s December final report.

• Policy Director Charles Pattison was honored with hisappointment to the Board of Advisors of the NationalInstitute for Transportation and Communities.

• Continued the highly popular monthly Dr. John M.DeGrove Community Steward Webinar series, reachingclose to 900 participants on critical issues facing Floridaincluding state and local resources for addressingimpacts of sea level rise, promoting comprehensivetransportation planning through complete streets,expanding Florida’s greenways network, planningethics, the 2014 Florida legislative session, and more.

• Assisted citizens defending their comprehensive plansand protecting critical natural resources across the

state, including in Brevard, Charlotte, Collier, Hendry,Lake, Madison, Martin, Palm Beach, St. Lucie, Volusiaand Wakulla Counties among others.

• Conducted surveys on key planning issues including thecitizen planning bill of rights and Developments ofRegional Impact (DRI), using the DRI survey results todevelop 1000 Friends’ position statement to guide ourwork with the Legislature.

• Led and facilitated the Sadowski Coalition, successfullyadvocating for $167.7 million for state and localaffordable housing funds.

• As founding partner of the Florida Community LandTrust Institute, assisted local governments throughoutthe state with land trust and lending issues.

• Assisted the Town of Jupiter with draftingcomprehensive plan amendments and landdevelopment regulations to create an inclusionaryhousing program.

• Co-chaired the Everglades Coalition’s GrowthManagement Committee.

• Helped identify a series of concerns about thecontroversial Sugar Hill Sector Plan proposed forrural Hendry County, resulting in the FloridaDepartment of Economic Opportunity citing anunprecedented 34 planning objections due to impactson the Everglades, related water issues, andconsistency with state law.

• Retained attorney Robert Hartsell, P.A., to representcitizens’ interests in Palm Beach County in the face ofproposals for significant inappropriate developmentand infrastructure in the county’s rural western lands.

• In partnership with ALERTS of Palm Beach County,filed a legal challenge in circuit court over Minto Westwhich, in conflict with the county’s comprehensiveplan and Rural Tier policies, would bring more than4500 new homes and roughly 2.2 million square feetof non-residential development to rural western lands.

• Advocated to protect Palm Beach County’s AgReserve from inappropriate development, andweighed in on major development projects on rural

western lands, including Avenir.

• Worked with the Guardians of Martin County and theMartin County Conservation Alliance to support aseries of positive planning and conservationamendments to improve the comprehensive plan.

• On behalf of Martin County, Policy Director CharlesPattison served as an expert witness regarding anadministrative challenge filed by developmentinterests to overturn positive conservation andplanning amendments to the comprehensive plan.

• Supported additional positive Martin Countycomprehensive plan amendments, also beingchallenged by local development interests, to tightenup wastewater standards in order to better protect theSt. Lucie River and Indian River Lagoon.

• In response to All Aboard Florida’s draftEnvironmental Impact Statement, raised concernsabout significant impacts on the marine industry,emergency vehicle operators, wildlife, CommunityRedevelopment Areas including minority populations,and property values.
