“When I Give I Give Myself”Walt Whitman

The Greeks defmed philanthropy as lovinghumanity. All of us experience the philanthropy ofothers as we walk through the Libraries at Northportand East Northport. The polished granite countertopsof the circulation desks, the grapevine wreath, theflourishing plants and weekly flower arrangements, the endearing bear sculpture, the crewelwork samplerof the old East Northport Library, the fabric paintingof the new East Northport Library, the children’sImagination Center and Friendship Seating, theframed Ramona poster, the outdoor flower pots atEast Northport, the classic books-on-tape collection, our American flags. These are just some of the manycontributions made to the Library. We thank all ofthose whose gifts make these buildings warm andpersonal spaces that are welcoming and central to thelife of the community. It takes a village to raise achild; it takes a community to create a library.

Speaking ofWritingAuthor Visit

M.E. Kerr, 1993recipient of the MargaretA. Edwards Award for herlifetime achievement inwriting for young adults, pays her third visit to theLibrary’s Speaking of Writing Program on May 20,1999. Ms. Kerr, a Long Islander living in East Hampton, sees a real distinction in writing for young adults, whoare concerned with the basics of making and losingfriends and wondering what to do with their lives.Kerr says, “My job as a writer of books for youngpeople is to entertain them, hoping they will want tocome back for more.”

Rosemary Wellsdedicates Streets of Gold

Rosemary Wells’ new book, Streets of Gold, is based on theactual journal of twelve-year-old Mary Antin, who emigratedfrom Russia to Boston in 1894. Drawing upon Mary’s account,Rosemary Wells dramatically illuminates the sorrow of leavingbehind the familiar—family, language, customs—and the joy ofbecoming part of a new world. Illustrator Dan Andreasen’spaintings capture the contrasts between Mary’s old home andher new one, heightening our understanding of both herstruggles and her remarkable achievement.

Rosemary Wells has dedicated Streets of Gold to JacquelineHerchenroder, Children’s Librarian, in whose memory theRosemary Wells Collection is also dedicated. On Wednesday,May 26, 7:30 p.m., at the East Northport Library, RosemaryWells will read from Streets of Gold. The Friends of the Librarywill have autographed copies of Streets of Gold for purchase aswell as other popular titles by Rosemary Wells, including herYoko, McDuff and Max books.
