A mini-bus transporting residents to work was attacked by apparent military operatives. Three IF members, Mr Benjamin Ngcobo, Mr Muzikayifani Ndwandwe and Mr Pat Manqele were killed instantly. M Doctor Shabangu, the driver of the taxi and an IFP member, died in hospital. Five other persons were also injured in the attack.

ANC Thokoza branch spokesperson, Mr Duma Nkosi, stated that Phola Park retaliatory fire on the minibus after its occupants indiscriminately fired at pedestrians on the Old Ver®®"'9'"9 Road, near the squatter camp. Evidence later led at the Goldstone Commission, found this allegation untrue, and indicated that the occupants of the minibus were unarmed and on their way to work at Rand Water Board.

(NOTE: ANC member, Mr Michael Phama, was found guilty in the Rand Supreme Court on June 2911993 for the above murders, as well as the murder of 16 predominantly IFP supporters on September 8 1991).

77/02/92 SOWETO - _ __ «IFP Jabuiani hostel residents were confronted by members of the SAP at Inhlazane Railway Station. The SAP wanted to confiscate the residents' traditional weapons. The residents resisted, feanng attack on the train, and the SAP fired at them with bird shot, injuring 29 residents.

The other hostel residents then boarded the train and were attacked near Mzimhlophe Railway Station by £ alleged ANC supporters. One person was killed and three were seriously injured. The name of the one

injured person is Mr Mbongeni Nzama.

28/02/92 UM1-AZI U SECTION - 02h00The house of IFP member, Mr Ngcobo was attacked by alleged ANC supporters. Petrol bombs and firearms were used in the attack. Xolani Ngcobo (6) was shot and injured in the attack.

29/02/92 OKHAHLAMBA / WEMBEZU . , , «IFP member, Mr Lafela Malevu, was attacked by alleged ANC supporters. Mr Malevu was stabbed andat present still in Edendale hospital.

79/02/92 RATANDA - , . . . MrTenaloIFP Youth Brigade member, Mr Steven Tsoale, was stabbed to death by unknown assailants. MrTsoalehad received death threats on previous occasions.

29/02/92 ok ’HAMl AMRA / WEMBEZI -1 0h30People attending the funeral of IFP Deputy-Secretary, Mr Mnandi Dladla, (see 2 2 /02 /9 2 ) were attacked by a mob of alleged ANC supporters. ANC Branch Secretary, Mr Herbert Zulu, was killed in the ensuing fighting and one IFP supporter was seriously injured.

^ A hand grenade was also thrown at the vehicle of IFP Branch Chairperson, Mr Duke Mbongwa. MrMbongwa escaped injury, but an IFP supporter sustained shrapnel wounds.

29/02/92 OZWATHINI / MATHULINl - 21h00The house of IFP member, Mr Sibusiso Chamane, was attacked by alleged ANC supporters ar™®d firearms. In the attack Mdudzi Chamane (14), Sithembiso Chamane (9), Vincent Ngcobo (18) and Ntombi Luthuli (4), were shot and killed.

m /m/Q9 PM PAMRFNI / ESIKHAW INI - .. .The house of IFP supporter and town councillor, Mr Ellias Mhlongo, was attacked by unknown assailants armed with firearms and hand grenades. Sixteen Makarov cartridges were found around the house thefollowing morning.

01/03/92 SHARPEVILLE -Mr Thlola Mojake, an IFP member, and his girlfriend were abducted by alleged ANC members. These kidnappers locked them both in a house. Later they returned and took Mr Mojake away. Mr Mojake s girlfriend hereafter managed to escape. Mr Mojake's body was found the next day.

01/03/92 UMKOM AAS / M AGABHENI - 14h00IFP member, Mr Ndodo Mazibuko (18), was shot at and stabbed by alleged ANC supporters. Mr Mazibuko was seriously wounded, but managed to escape.

02/03/92 SOWETO / DIEPKLOOF - ,♦ .flaeIFP member, Mr Shomeza Xaba, was killed by unknown assailants armed with AK-47 assault nfles.

04/03/92 SOWETO -Commuters at Nancefield Railway Station were disarmed by the SAP. A news crew was present and the crew apparently interfered with police conduct and instructed the SAP to apprehend certain individuals.

These commuters, who were mainly from Nancefield Hostel and IFP members, boarded train no. 9027 to Johannesburg. At Orlando and Mlamlamkunzi Railway Stations an armed group of alleged ANC supporters boarded the train. These groups attacked mainly IFP members and some of them were thrown out of the moving train.

At Croesus Railway Station coaches transporting mainly IFP members were attacked. In the attack pangas, knobkieries, knives and sharp instruments were used. The names of three of the injured are: Mr Happy Hlongwane, Mr Benjamin Mokoena and Mr Khulabehle Mbatha.

05/03/92 KWAMASHU - 20h45IFP members preparing for the funeral of Mrs Dlamini were fired upon with an AK-47 assault nfle by alleged ANC supporters.

07/03/92 ALEXANDRA - aki^IFP members attending the funeral of Mr Xaba (see 06/03/92) were confronted by alleged ANC members, who informed them that no IFP member will be buried in an "ANC graveyard". Unidentified gunmen also opened fire with AK-47 assault rifles on the funeral procession. Two IFP members, Mr Mchunu and Mr Donald Khanyile, were killed and at least twelve people were injured.

14/03/92 EMPANGENI / MATSHANA -The house of IFP member, Mr P. Mlambo, was attacked by alleged ANC supporters armed with AK-47 assault rifles. In the attack Mr Mlambo's two daughters, Dudu and Ntombikayise, were shot and killed and his wife and his one infant were injured. IFP members, Mr Dumisani Masuku, Mr Jabulani Xhakaza and Mr Nichodimus Khumalo were also shot and killed in the attack.

15/03/92 VULINDLELA / IMBALI - 10h30An IFP meeting held at Imbali Community Hall was disrupted by alleged ANC supporters. Shots were fired in Mlhlamkosi Road, forcing the meeting to be dispersed. IFP member, Lungile Mabaso was shot and injured in the attack.

15/03/92 VULINDLELA / IMBALI - 16h00Alleged ANC supporters attacked IFP supporting residents in Mlhlamkosi Road. Numerous shots were fired at IFP members and their houses.

£ 15/03/92 OKHAHLAMBA/WEMBFZI - 17h00After attending an IFP meeting, the Mchunu family was attacked by a group of alleged ANC supporters. These attackers, who were armed with pangas, bush knives and spears, surrounded the Mchunu family and started to hack and stab them. Maria and Fikiie Mchunu were admitted to Escourt Hospital, whilst Mondli and Xolani Mchunu were not seriously injured.

15/03/92 UMLAZI U SECTION - 18h00 & 22h30Unidentified attackers, armed with hand grenades, firearms and petrol bombs attacked the house of IFP Organiser, Mr Mayisa, at 18h00. Afterwards the houses of other IFP members, including those of Mr July Mr Mzobe, Miss Khoza and Mr Zulu, were attacked.

At 22h30 the house of IFP Organiser, Mr Gwala, was destroyed in an attack by the same qroup of assailants.

15/03/92 PORT SHEPSTONE / MURCHISON - % The house of an IFP supporter was set alight. (CRA301 /03/92)

16/03/92 VULINDI FLA / BRUNTVII I F -A hand grenade was thrown at the house of IFP member, Mr Ngubane, by alleged ANC supporters.

16/03/92 VULINDLELA / BRUNTVILLE -The house of IFP member, Mr M. Hadebe, was set alight when a petrol bomb was thrown at the house by alleged ANC supporters.

16/03/92 VULINDLELA / IMBALI - 02h00Mr Ndoda Silangu, who is mentally handicapped, was shot and killed by alleged ANC supporters. This attack was followed by a prolonged assault on IFP houses in Imbali’s Mlhlamkosi Road.

16/03/92 VULINDLELA / BRUNTVILLE - 18hOQBruntville Hostel was attacked by alleged ANC supporters who were armed with an assortment of weapons. Two IFP members, Mr V.O. Nene and Mr Vusumuzi Gumede, were injured.

17/03/92 UMLAZI -A petrol bomb was thrown at the house of IFP member, Mr Simon Dladla.

17/03/92 UMLAZI U SECTION - 09h30The houses of IFP members, Mr Sithole and Mr Dlamini, were stoned and hand grenaded by alleged ANC supporters. Gun shots were also fired, injuring IFP member, Mr Sipho Sithole.

17/03/92 VULINDLELA / BRUNTVILLE - 17h00The house of IFP member, Mr Phillip Ngubane, was partially damaged in an attack by alleged ANC supporters armed with a hand grenade.

18/03/92 SOWETO /'MEADOWLANDS -IFP members and hostel residents were disarmed by the SAP at Mzimhlophe Hostel. These hostel residents were subsequently attacked on their way to Mzimhlophe Railway Station by alleged ANC supporters armed with axes and pangas. Seven people were injured.

05/04/92 VULINDLELA / IMBALI STAGE TWO - 16h30The house of the late Mr Thu Ngcobo, an IFP councillor, was attacked by alleged ANC supporters armed with firearms.

06/04/92 VOSLOORUS / ZONKIZIZWE -The predominantly IFP supporting Zonkizizwe area was attacked by alleged Xhosa-speaking assailants armed with AK-47 assault rifles. At least six people were killed and 20 injured in the attack. The names of five of the deceased are: Mpiyakhe Mtshali (29), Thembi Sibanda (27), Rufus Marumula, Simon Marumula and Bekimpi Enock Buthelezi (40).

The names of some the injured who were taken to Natalspruit Hospital are: Maria Sibanda (74), Thami Sibanda (10), Mrs Simon Marumula and her three-month-old son, a child Lichakake (1) and Ms. Dineo Lichakake (18) who was pregnant.

The attackers appeared to fire at random at residents and thereafter set fire to various motor vehicles and houses which were burnt to the ground. Several motor vehicles had all their windows broken.

06/04/92 VULINDLELA / IMBALI STAGE TWO -IFP Youth Brigade members were attacked in Ward 6 by unidentified assailants. No injuries were sustained.

06/04/92 SOWETO / DOBSONVILLE - 01h00The house (no. 1776 S.M. Nkatlo Drive) of IFP Chairperson, Mr Peter Magwaza, was petrol bombed by alleged ANC supporters. No injuries were reported, but substantial damage was caused to the house.

09/04/92 VOSLOORUS -The SAP demanded to search the predominantly IFP supporting Vosloorus hostel. When they were asked for a search warrant, the SAP responded by opening fire. Mr Jabulani Ntuii died instantly and Mr Mduduzi Dladla died the following day from injuries sustained in the incident.

09/04/92 VULINDLELA / BRUNTVILLE - 06h00The bodies of IFP member, Mr Cothoza Hlongwane and his daughter, were found near Rosette Farm. Mr Hlongwane and his daughter were shot and stabbed to death.

11/04/92 MPUMALANGA / NYANINGA - 20h00In an attack on the predominantly IFP supporting Nyaninga area. About seventeen houses were burnt down in the attack.

12/04/92 WESSELTON-IFP Youth Brigade Chairperson, Mr Chris Ngwenya, shot and killed by unknown assailants in the street outside his house. Mr Ngwenya's wife was also killed in the attack. An unidentified young woman was also injured in the attack.

Mr Ngwenya gave evidence before the Goldstone Commission of Inquiry on the alleged activities of the "Black Cat” gang on 09 April 1992.

21/04/92 MPUMALANGA / MAQONGQQ - Q5h45A KwaZulu bus transporting people from the KwaNyavu area, a predominantly IFP supporting area, was ambushed by alleged ANC supporters. Two IFP members, Mrs Manclane Khanyile and Mr Sibusiso Duma were shot and killed and eight IFP supporters were injured in the attack.

21/04/92 MPUMALANGA / MAQONGQQ - 14hnnA police vehicle was attacked by alleged ANC supporters. An IFP member, Mr Nunu Dladla who was in one of the vehicles, was injured in the attack.

Some of the houses that were set alight: Mr Ishmail Bojosi (no. 1931 Zone 6),, Mr Molotsi (no. 523 Zone 6), Mr Ntuli (Zone 7), Mr Abel Buthelezi (no. 11040 Zone 7), Mrs Annah Khanyi (no. 9952 Zone 7) and Mr Poko (no. 11329 Zone 3). Several IFP supporting residents were also thrown out of their houses by these attackers The names of some of these victims are: Mr David Pabe (no. 3222 Zone 13), Mr Jabulani Mngomezulu (no. 4688 Zone

Most of these victims fled for safety to KwaMadala Hostel in Sebokenq. The situation in the area is tense and the persons in the hostel report that they are living in a state of seige.

armed with firearms. Two houses (no. 5707 - Ndlovu family and no. 5922 - Thwala family) and five shacks were destroyed in the attack. The four persons killed in the attack were identified as: Nozangalaza Ndlovu Mkhulisem Ndlovu, Jabulani Ndlovu and Mboko Ndlovu.

27/04/92 UMBUMBULU / MASHIWASF - 04h30A bus transporting people from the predominantly IFP supporting Mashiwase area, was ambushed by a group of unidentified assailants armed with AK-47 assault rifles. 06/05/92 VULINDLELA / EDENDAI F -A party of IFP members, who were escorted by the SAP, were ambushed near Edendale. The attack occurred when a truck, in which IFP leader and KwaZulu Legislative Assembly member for Vulindlela, Mr David Ntombela, was travelling, passed a crowd returning from an ANC meeting. Shots were also fired.

06/05/92 SHARPEVILLE -IFP supporter, Mr Elias Sibiya, and his daughter were abducted by alleged ANC supporters. Miss Sibiya was also raped and seriously injured by about 28 men. Miss Sibiya died in hospital on 18/05/92 as a result of injuries sustained.

07/05/92 UMBUMBULU / KWATHONYANA -IFP members, Mr Sithole (65) and Mr Mngadi (68), were killed whilst sleeping in their hiding place at a sugar cane field.

In the attack all five members of the family were killed. The names of the deceased are: Elias Sibiya (44), Bettie Sibiya (38), Bongani Sibiya (10), Ndlela Sibiya (7) and Violet Sibiya (5).

26/05/92 SOWETO / MEADOWLANDS - 14h00A hand grenade was thrown at the predominantly IFP supporting Meadowlands hostel. No injuries were reported.

27/05/92 ALEXANDRA -A mortar attack was launched against the predominantly IFP supporting Madala Hostel. One mortar landed inside the hostel and two exploded outside the hostel. Two people were injured in the attack.

27/05/92 OZWATHINI / MATHULINI - 20h00IFP members, Mr Phakamani Mhlongo (20) and Mr Mbheki Maphanga (22), were attacked by alleged ANC supporters. These attackers were driving a Toyota Hilux and offered both IFP members a lift. Shots were then fired at Mr Mhlongo and Mr Maphanga. Mr Maphanga was shot in the stomach and Mr Mhlongo managed to escape without injury.

27/05/92 UMKOMAAS / MAGABHENI - 20h30IFP members and supporters attending a party were shot at. A hand grenade was also thrown into the house. One person was shot and injured. (CRA135/05/92)

28/05/92 UMLAZI U SECTION - 18h00IFP member, Mr Thoshi Thusi, was attacked and stabbed by five alleged ANC supporters who accused Mr Thusi of being an "Uklova".

30/05/92 HLANGANANI / MKHOBENI -IFP members returning from a rally at Vulindlela, were ambushed on the Mkhobeni bridge. Inkosi Nyela Dlamini was killed in the attack and three people were injured. The assailants were armed with AK-47 assault rifles.

30/05/92 OZWATHINI / MATHULINI - 23h00The house of IFP Branch Chairperson, Mr Lazarus Nzama (54), was attacked by alleged ANC supporters. AK-47 assault rifles and hand grenades were used in the attack. No injuries were sustained, but the house was partially damaged.

The house of Mr V.B. Ndlovu was again attacked later the same day. No injuries were sustained (CR31 & 35/06/92)

03/06/92 THOKOZA -IFP member, Mr Joseph Mtshali, was seriously injured when he was thrown out of a moving train. Unidentified persons asked the passengers on the train their ethnicity and when they found Mr Mtshali, they hung him out of the window and then threw him of the train.

03/06/92 HLANGANANI / PATHENI - 1 1h15IFP members, who were escorting IFP supporting pensioners to Richmond pay point, were attacked by a group of alleged ANC supporters armed with firearms and stones. Two IFP members, Mr Ndabaphathwa Dlamini and Mrs Reginah Maduna (35), were injured and the local Spar supermarkets' windows were broken.

03/06/92 VULINDLELA / IMBALI - 11 h45Gunmen again attacked the house of KwaZulu Deputy Minister of Works, Mr V.B. Ndlovu. One of the attackers was wounded and another was also arrested.

08/06/92 SOWETO - 06h00Heavily armed groups boarded train no. 9025 at Orlando and Mlamlamkunzi railway stations. It is alleged that there were no SAP presence at both these stations. At the following railway stations these groups demonstrated and sung ANC slogans. At the Braamfontein railway station the SAP was present and made no attempt to disarm these groups. At Johannesburg railway station, coaches which were identified as carrying predominantly IFP supporting commuters were attacked. A large number of persons were injured.

It is alleged that the reason for the attack was because Mr Mbele wore a traditional leather wristband (it signifies a certain status in regard to the esteem of the ancestors).

14/06/92 SOWETO / DUBE -IFP member, Mr Alson Mchunu, was shot and killed by unidentified assailants.

14/06/92 SOWETO / DOBSONVILLE -ANC supporters used a mechanical shovel to demolish sections of the predominantly IFP supporting hostel, whilst IFP members were attending a Youth Brigade Rally. Shots were also fired at hostel residents.

14/06/92 BOIPATONG -The house of an IFP supporter was set alight by unknown assailants.

14/06/92 BOPHELONG -The house of an IFP supporter was set alight by unidentified assailants.

14/06/92 UMKOMAAS / MAGABHENI - 14h00Unidentified assailants shot at IFP member, Mr Davas Mncwabe. No injuries were sustained.

14/06/92 BOIPATONG - 14h35IFP member, Mr B.L. Khumalo, was set alight and killed in his Passat by unidentified assailants.

14/06/92 MANDINI / NEMBE - 17h30IFP Branch Chairperson, Mr Khumalo, was shot and killed by unidentified assailants on his way home.

14/06/92 UMKOMAAS / MAGABHENI - 18h00Unidentified assailants attacked the house (no. 100, Ward 4) of IFP member, Mrs Ndlovu. Mrs Ndlovu was shot and killed in the attack. Shots were also fired at residents who came to investigate the shooting.

15/06/92 HLANGANANI / PATHENI - 08h00Alleged ANC supporters again (see 12/06/92) attacked the predominantly IFP supporting Patheni area. The SADF intervened.

15/06/92 EMPANGENI / NGWELEZANE - 18h45Alleged ANC supporters armed with AK-47 assault rifles attacked Special Constable Sipho Mhlongo and IFP member, Mr Michael Myeni. Special Constable Mhlongo was killed in the attack and Mr Myeni was seriously wounded.

15/06/92 UMKOMAAS / MAGABHENI - 22h15A hand grenade was thrown at the house (no. 358 Ward 3) of prominent IFP member, Mrs Reginah Khelwa. No injuries were reported, but the house sustained substantial damage.

16/06/92 UMLAZI U SECTION - 05h45A SAP van was stoned and fired by alleged ANC supporters whilst patrolling the area.
