The Kagura, commonly known as Keichiku Kagura, has been

handed down through many generations in the Keichiku area.

It is included in Buzen Kagura, which has been designated as a

National Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property in Japan.

The Kagura Area (Picture 2)

First, let’ s talk about the Kagura

stage. The Kagura stage is the place

where the deities come down to

Earth to spend time with the

townspeople.

The stage is made by using four

bamboo trees, shimenawa (a twisted

rope used to ward off evil spirits) and

gohei (plaited paper streamers) to

create a sacred boundary.

Afterwards, the harvest from the

mountains and seas, gohei, sacred

sake, and rice are all offered to the

deities. This completes the

preparation for the Kagura stage.

The Kagura Area (Picture 2)

We have just arrived at the shrine.

“Townspeople are gathering at the

shrine and offering Kagura to the

deities* for the purpose of expressing

their gratitude and lifting up their

prayers for good harvest and health” ,

Misaki says. Then, we’ ll show you

how to enjoy Kagura.

* There are many different gods and

goddesses in Japanese myths and

Kagura. For the purpose of

understanding, we will use the word

“deities” to refer to these gods and

goddesses in this story.

The Kagura Stage (Picture 3)

First, let’ s talk about the Kagura

stage. The Kagura stage is the place

where the deities come down to

Earth to spend time with the

townspeople.

The stage is made by using four

During Kagura performances, performers

almost always have torimono or Kagura

props in hand. It is believed that God will

come down from the sky to the torimono,

which the dancers are holding.

and props, as this will definitely make your

experience more interesting.

deities will come down from the sky

holding.

From here, we will be

introducing Shiki Kagura. Some of the

most impressive aspects of Shiki

Kagura are the Orii and Mifuku

dances.

In this Kagura performance, this

dance includes performers who are

not wearing masks. The performers

wear black leather hats called eboshi

while dancing with folding fans and

staffs that have plaited paper

streamers. This is a purification dance,

where four performers dance to

represent the four cardinal directions.

Within various Kagura groups,

there are differences in the way that

Shiki Kagura is performed. Some

groups will sing a kamioroshi song or

will say a special phrase called

gonjyou. An example of gonjyo is iigi,

which is the most basic type of kakura

dance.

Shiki Kagura (Picture 7)

Keichiku Kagura performances are

roughly divided into two types of

Kagura, Shiki Kagura and Hono

Kagura.From here, we will be

introducing Shiki Kagura. The most

impressive performance of Shiki

Kagura is the Ichiban Kagura. It’ s also

called Orii, and Mifuku, depending on

the area. This Kagura performance is

used to invite the deities to enjoy in

the celebration. The performers

don’ t wear masks. The performers

wear black leather hats called eboshi,

staffs that have plaited paper

streamers. This is a purification dance,

Jiwari Kagura (Picture 8)

Next, we will teach you about Jiwari

Kagura. At first, the Gods of the Four

Seasons make appearances and

gracefully dance, one by one.

Another God, who is dressed in

yellow, makes an appearance.

However, since the other four Gods fill

all the spaces on the calendar wheel,

he complains and gets jealous. Soon

after, another God makes an

appearance and is able to coordinate

and make suggestions to the Gods of

the Four Seasons, which allow the

Jealous God to be able to fit onto the

calendar wheel.

In order to do this, he further divides

the portions of each season that were

once 90 days into 18-day and 72-day

portions. He allots the 18-day portions

from each season to the Jealous God,

which is represented in yellow on the

picture. It is during these periods of

time called Doyou that the gradual

transition from one season to another

occurs.

Next, we will teach you about Jiwari

Kagura. At first, the deities of the Four

From here, we will be learning about a

performance that serves to honor God. In

this performance called Sanjin, three Gods

make appearances: The Mountain God ̶

holding an evergreen branch, The God of

the Rice Fields̶holding a scythe and a

gardening tool called a hoe, and The God of

the Sea̶holding a fishing rod.

The Mountain God has the ability to control

the source of water. When spring comes,

the Mountain God appears and helps to

grow the rice plants by bringing water to

the rice fields. When the season changes to

autumn and the harvest is over, the

Mountain God usually returns to the

mountains.

As the Mountain God begins to return

to his dwelling, the God of the Sea and the

God of the Rice Fields ask him to stay and

play around. It is here that the Mountain

God then shares mochi, also known as rice

cakes, with the audience to celebrate the

good harvest. The Mountain God finally

returns home.

クワとカマを持った里の神、

鯛を釣竿につけた海の神が

Sanjin- The Story of the three Gods

From here, we will be learning about a

performance that serves to honor

three deities.

In this performance entitled Sanjin,

three deities make appearances: The

Mountain God ̶holding an

evergreen branch; The God of the Rice

Fields̶holding a scythe and a

gardening tool called a hoe; and The

God of the Sea̶holding a fishing rod

with a sea bream.The Mountain God

has the ability to control the source of

water. When spring comes, the

Mountain God appears and helps to

Bon Kagura (Picture 10)

The next Kagura we will be

introducing is called Bon Kagura,

which is a dance where performers

hold rice trays in their hands. The

dancers are so skilled that you’ ll

never see them drop even a single

grain of rice while performing Kagura

dances. The purpose of this dance is

to express gratitude for the success of

the past harvest and pray for

continued success in future harvests.

So, this is also called Komemai, or the

Rice Dance.

Next, we will be talking about a dance

that expresses the World of Myths.

When doing this dance, performers

wear a mask to transform into God. By

wearing this mask, performers recieve

spiritual power and the people

dancing are able to receive protection

from demons. The most well-known

mask is the goblin mask that is used in

Kagura such as Misaki Kagura.

In the popular Iwatobiraki Kagura, the

Omoikane, Uzame, Tadzikarao, and

Futodama masks are used. During this

performance, a giant serpent, which is

known for consuming food from the

harvests, makes an appearance. To rid

the place of the serpent, performers

use the Susanoo and Tenadzuchi

masks.

When doing this dance, performers

deities. By wearing this mask,

used in Kagura are the goblin masks,

which can be seen in Misaki Kagura.

The World of Myths (Picture 12)

This story begins with the God

Izanagi and the Goddess Izanami.

They have two children, who become

especially famous ̶ a daughter

named Amaterasu and a son named

Susanoo.

The rambunctious Susanoo

causes a lot of trouble for his sister,

Amaterasu. One day, she is so mad

that she hides herself in a cave and

closes the entrance with a large stone.

女の神様イザナミから

はじまります。

ふたりは、たくさんの神様をうみます。

その中でも有名なのが、

姉のアマテラスと弟のスサノオです。

スサノオはあばれんぼうで、

いつも

アマテラスをこまらせました。

スサノオにおこったアマテラスは、

岩戸の中にかくれてしまいます。

The World of Myths (Picture 12)

This story begins with the God Izanagi

and the Goddess Izanami. They have

two children, who become especially

famous ̶ a daughter named

Amaterasu and a son named Susanoo.

The rambunctious Susanoo causes a

lot of trouble for his sister, Amaterasu.

One day, she is so mad that she hides

herself in a cave and closes the

entrance with a large stone.

Since Amaterasu is the Goddess

of the Sun, when she goes into the

cave, the world becomes dark. This

causes many Gods to come together

in order to discuss how to open the

cave.

After this, the Goddess

Amenouzume who is well-known for

being a great dancer and the powerful

God Tajikarao appear. The Goddess

Amenouzume begins to dance in a

charming way which causes everyone

to start laughing. Amaterasu, who is in

the cave, hears the laughter and

moves the stone a little to see what is

happening outside. When the

entrance to the cave slightly opens,

the powerful God Tajikarao is able to

fully open the cave. Everyone is so

happy that they rejoice and say, “ You

did it!”

アマテラスが岩戸にかくれてしまうと、

地上は

闇につつまれました。

「こまったなあ」、八百万の神があつまり

そうだんしました。

 

そこへ、おどりの上手なアメノウズメと

力もちのタヂカラオがやってきました。

 

アメノウズメは、おしりをフリフリ

おどります。みんなは大声で笑います。

外のようすが気になった

アマテラスが、岩戸をそっとずらし、

のぞいたとき、

まちかまえていたタヂカラオが

岩戸を 

エーイ と、開くと、

闇の世界に光があふれ、

めでたし、めでたし。

(男も女も力をあわせることで岩戸は開く!

と神様たちは教えてくれます。)

Since Amaterasu is the Goddess of the

cave. After this, the Goddess

The Gods and Goddess descent to

This next Kagura shows the scene

where the Gods and Goddess descend

down from the Heavens to Earth. On

the way down to Earth, these Gods

from the Heavens meet up with the

God that lives on Earth ̶ Sarutahiko.

Another name for Sarutahiko is

Misaki, and he is the one wearing the

mask. His secondary name, Misaki, is

only used in the Keichiku area.

 

岩戸開きで大活躍した神様たちが、

地上へ降りてくる「天孫降臨」の場面が、

「ミサキ神楽」です。

神様たちが、

天の高天原から くだる途中、

アメノヤチマタというところで、

地上の神

サルタヒコと であいます。 

この 

サルタヒコの神

こそ、

鬼のお面をかぶっている、ミサキ鬼です。

This next Kagura depicts the scene

where the deities descend down from

the heavens to Earth. On the way

down to Earth, the deities meet the

God that lives here on Earth ̶

Sarutahiko. Another name for

Sarutahiko is Misaki, and he is the one

wearing the mask. His secondary

name, Misaki, is only used in the

Keichiku area.

Next, we will introduce Misaki Kagura.

In this dance, Amenouzume appears

as a shinto priest. Soon after, Misaki

also appears. At first, Amenouzume

and Misaki don`t know each other and

begin to battle. As they are battling,

Amenouzume realizes that Misaki is

the God of Guidance. The battle ends,

and they become friends.

ミサキ神楽では、アメノウズメは、

男の神主姿です。手には魔を祓う

御幣と鈴を持ち、祓いの舞を舞います。

 

そこに、登場するのが、ミサキ鬼です。

正体のわからないミサキ鬼と

アメノウズメは、

はげしい戦いの舞をくりひろげます。

ようやく 

アメノウズメに 地上の神と

みとめてもらったミサキ鬼は、

魔法の杖である鬼杖をわたして、

天下泰平と五穀豊穣をちかいます。

そして、ミサキ鬼の道案内で、

天の神様たちは

地上へ降りてゆくのです。

Next, we will introduce Misaki Kagura.

In this dance, Amenouzume appears

as a shinto priest. Amenouzume

dances to purify the surrounding area

with the gohei and bell. Soon after,

Misaki also appears. At first,

Amenouzume and Misaki don’ t know

each other and begin to battle. As

they are battling, Amenouzume

realizes that Misaki is the God of

Guidance. The battle ends, and they

become friends. Misaki gives his

magic staff called Onzue to

Amenouzume, and pledges world

peace and good harvest. Misaki

guides the deities to Earth.

It is said that the staff Misaki is

holding, which is called Shikanjyou,

has the ability to bring people back to

life. Because the goblins have spiritual

power, it is said that children who are

carried by the goblins during the

performance will be able to grow up

strong without sickness and disease.

At the end of the dance, Misaki

sometimes chooses audience

members and gives them his staff. If

you receive it, you will have good

fortune in your future.

In this wonderful area of

Keichiku, Kagura has been handed

down by mountain priests from

generation to generation, and is a

custom which is very much alive

today. It is our hope that Keichiku

Kagura will continue to be passed

down for many generations to come.
