HYPNOTHERAPY

Hypnotherapy has been used successfully in cases of pain relief, insomnia, addiction, phobias, stress and depression. There is a growing body of evidence that it can also greatly aid and galvanise the body’s natural healing processes in a wide variety of illnesses. Our syllabus covers all the basics necessary for professional practice as a hypnotherapist.

PSYCHOTHERAPEUTIC COUNSELLING

At Chrysalis, we take the best elements of well-known counselling and psychotherapy models and put them together in our unique, tried and tested approach, called psychotherapeutic counselling. This allows you to help with a range of common human problems whilst developing your own self-knowledge and understanding.

Which Course to Choose?

All courses can be started immediately with no previous experience or qualifi cations. The majority of our students apply for Course 3 as this represents a substantial cost saving and incorporates the full syllabus of Course 2. NATIONAL COUNSELLING SOCIETY AND NATIONAL HYPNOTHERAPY SOCIETY MEMBERSHIP FEES

Students are required to join one or more accrediting professional bodies as soon as they enrol, and must maintain membership throughout training, joining the designated Register on graduation. 2017 Fees are £100 for the National Counselling Society and £90 for the National Hypnotherapy Society. Membership carries a large range of benefits.

AIM CERTIFICATION

Students wishing to receive AIM/Ofqual recognised certificates must pay a separate registration fee to AIM Awards for each year of study (currently £65 for year 1.)

Can Chrysalis courses make me eligible to become a registrant with a register recognisedby the Professional Standards Authority?(An Accredited Register)?

YES.

In 2010 the Government asked the Professional Standards Authority (which oversees organisations such as the General Medical Council, Health & Care Professions Council, and Nursing & Midwifery Council) to launch a system of Accredited Registers for professional associations who could meet the rigorous standards. The Accredited Register programme was launched in 2012 and it is now vital that counsellors and therapists are registered. The public is increasingly seeking only accredited registrants and the NHS is including the Accredited Register programme in its provision of services.

Chrysalis courses, where indicated, are your route to the all important status of being a Registrant on an Accredited Register which is now vital for your professional success.

Are Chrysalis courses accredited by reputable professional associations?

YES.

Where indicated on the course pages, Chrysalis courses are fully accredited by either the National Counselling Society or National Hypnotherapy Society. It’s compulsory to join the Societies and maintain

membership throughout training, as well as to join as a Registrant or Accredited Member on graduation (depending on course.) From there, you can progress to even higher levels of membership and recognition.

The Societies are both Accredited Register holders with the Professional Standards Authority and have a host of benefi ts to your membership, such as eligibility to join the Royal Society of Public Health. Senior Society grades are eligible for Fellowship.

Are Chrysalis courses recognised by OFQUAL and are they on the QCF?

YES.

Where indicated, courses are recognised by OFQUAL via AIM Awards and are listed on the Qualifi cations and Credit Framework. Unlike other training providers who just issue their own “internal” qualifi cations, Chrysalis qualifi cations are externally recognised and credits can be transferred for further education.

What is studying with Chrysalis like?

• As well as face to face work, you will be given a wide variety of regular assessed practical and theoretical modules

• There is one homework assignment per month with an average of 30 hours reading and writing - approximately 8 hours per week

• Many courses have practice groups which meet between modules

• A personal tutor is available by phone and email in-between classes (at set contact times)

• Your client work will be appropriate to your chosen course and skill level and can range from supervised case studies to a placement depending on your chosen course

• Our methods of assessing students are wide ranging and fair, focusing on key practical skills. Chrysalis uses a system of independent second marking as well as using a highly qualified External Examiner to ensure quality and consistency

• Each year, final assessment is on your practical classroom work and work with clients and you will qualify if considered safe, ethical and competent at the level of your chosen course

When and where do courses take place?

• Courses are held across the UK in many different locations. (Please note, although we run courses at universities,they are not part of the university syllabus)

• Chrysalis courses meet for one full class day per month, on a weekend. In addition, students meet with fellow students for scheduled practice sessions, which are arranged flexibly and can be evenings or weekends.

• Classes run throughout the year with the exception of July, August and late December

• Courses start in either Spring or Autumn depending on your location

• Your brochure label will provide you with exact dates and the location of your nearest course. Courses normally start in the venue where you are interviewed

• As our courses are routinely over-subscribed weadvise that you enrol several months before your course begins in order to reserve your place andsecure your funding

What can I do with a Chrysalis qualification?

• Career opportunities with a Chrysalis qualification can include; self-employment, whether working in a clinic or from home; employment in a variety of settings; enhancing your existing career; training and supervising, and a host of others. These opportunities can and should be combined to gain full use of your qualification

• It’s worth noting that job opportunities are generally available for counsellors. There are few, if any jobs available for hypnotherapists and the vast majority of hypnotherapists therefore work in private practice

• We can help you towards building a successful practice and ensure you understand all the relevant elements of using your qualification successfully

How do placements and supervision work with Chrysalis?

• Earlier courses are case study based and useclassroom supervision

• The Level 4 Advanced Diploma in Psychotherapeutic Counselling requires a formally supervised placement arrangement and the Level 5 Diploma requires an approved external placement. For these two courses, supervision and placements are generally arranged by the student (with support from Chrysalis) and will incur some additional expense. Chrysalis will help arrange a number of low cost supervision options for you

If you have a past history of addiction to drugs or alcohol; any criminal history; have been subject to any complaints procedures related to this fi eld; are recently bereaved; have been diagnosed mentally ill or are receiving medication for an emotional or psychological condition; have a serious physical illness or condition, are pregnant or epileptic - we may be able to accept your application but you must tell us in the declaration on the Application Form and enclose a covering letter which fully

discloses your situation. For example, pregnancy and epilepsy may be contra-indicated for hypnotherapy and so medical permission may be required; whereas certain classes of illness may have safety to practice issues which need to be assessed.

We will make your enrolment decision on a case by case basis and will fully comply with all equality, diversity and disability regulations, where necessary taking independent advice.

What standards do I have to meet to apply?

• Entry into our first year is open to any adult who can demonstrate that they can understand the course materials, is ethical and responsible, and who wishes to make a difference to themselves and others by entering this field. If you have a desire to grow and to help others, we welcome your application

• Direct Entry onto our second year is possible if you have a Level 3 qualification in counselling or some types of professional hypnotherapy qualification

• Entry onto our Level 5 & 6 courses is normallyat the point of passing our other courses

Before I trained as a social worker I had completed a year’s certificate course in counselling skills. I really enjoyed the course and learned a lot about myself as well as gaining a basic understanding of the theories underpinning counselling. I started looking through the job section of my local paper and came across the advert for Chrysalis, this is when I had my light bulb moment. I called head office straight away, filled in the paper work and got an interview. My interview was the first ‘work’ thing I had done since having my baby and it felt incredibly surreal, as did my very first day at Chrysalis. I remember being dropped off by my husband and daughter, they gave me a good luck card and I walked into the room feeling nervous and scared but excited for the future.

That first day flew by, Karen Ferguson was my hypnotherapy tutor and she was very different to the lecturers at university. She moved around the room and was very dynamic. I left that first day feeling exhausted, elated and sure in the knowledge that I had made the right decision. I was going to become a counsellor; I was going to have my own practice. My next step was to move house so we began hunting and I found a house with an office in the garden. It was perfect and I moved in just before the end of my first years training, ready to set up my business. During the first year I had learned how to use hypnotherapy, a completely new skill and one which I continue to use to great effect for anxiety, hypnobirthing, building confidence and helping people move on from their past.

I had paid for the whole 3 year Chrysalis course up front because it was much cheaper to do it this way and it meant that I had committed to the 3 years. Starting in the 2nd year I continued to practice hypnotherapy but also started to learn more about counselling and became more determined to work as hard as I could. Having previously completed a degree and diploma I found the essays comfortable to complete during the course. One of the reasons that I’d chosen Chrysalis was because of the flexibility they offered. There was one days per month which suited me as I needed to return to work in order to fund my new venture and it also meant that I could work around my daughter. I joined a brilliant study group of women who also had young children and we all understood the pressures each other faced. We were able to support one another and meet at times that suited us. I soon became very good friends with the women and we were able to support one another through the emotions raised by the course.

While studying with Chrysalis, I undertook therapy for myself and quickly learned that many of the reasons why I had gone into this field were exactly the reasons why I did need some professional support. I found a therapist and was able to work through my own issues with the support of them and my study group. In fact, I worked through my issues so well that at the end of my second year I had my second baby! Now studying with one child had been manageable as it was only one full day per month and there were flexible study groups. Studying with a child and a new born however was something else!! Abby was born in September and I was back to Chrysalis in October so I had a few weeks to get myself together and persuade Abby to take a bottle of expressed milk so that I could attend class. It was never easy to leave her but the understanding that I got from my tutor and classmates was brilliant. It also helped that one of my ex-tutors had a baby at the same time!

Unfortunately after Abby, I developed Post Natal Depression. This was not something that I had a huge amount of knowledge of and it took me by total surprise. I knew that something was wrong, I tried to talk with my friends, my health visitor, my family about how I was feeling but they just couldn’t get it. One the outside I was coping, I was studying, looking after my 2 children, but on the inside I was struggling. I still remember the day that we looked in depth at depression. I remember looking at the checklist for PND in my notes and thinking, this is what is going on for me. My tutor again was amazing (I expected nothing less from her, she was amazing through the whole year). I sort help from my GP, talked with my family and gradually got better. I finished my diploma with a new baby, a distinction and a new career ahead of me.

5 years after I finished my Advanced Diploma where am I? Well, I run a successful Social Enterprise providing affordable counselling in Hertfordshire, I have people working for me, I have a full case load of clients, I run a support group for mums struggling with the emotions around pregnancy and motherhood and I support Chrysalis students by offering placements.

I began my training at Chrysalis with the idea that I would have my own practice. I envisaged working from my home garden, seeing enough clients to pay the bills and keep my brain working. I have ended up running my own therapy centre!!

All courses are sold on the basis of their educational value and carry no guarantee of accreditation, recognition, validation, employment or success in private practice. Entry to, continuation of, and removal from any Accredited Register or any future

statutory register is at the sole discretion of that register and Chrysalis Not For Profi t Limited cannot guarantee that completion of its courses will lead to such registration or that registration criteria will not change.

Students will be required to pay their course fees in accordance with their individual agreements and failure to do so could result in removal from the course. Additional costs to be borne by students above their course fees can include supervision and placement costs and course text costs and will include membership fees to accrediting bodies. Chrysalis Not For Profi t Limited does not support or recommend applications to professional bodies which do not accredit its courses and will not assist students in applying to those bodies. Aim Awards certifi cate fees are included in the course prices at the timeof printing.

Students on course 1 are required to join, as students, the HS on enrolment and the NCS after 5 months, joining the HS as an MHS on graduation. Students on Course 2 are required to maintain membership of the NCS &HS throughout, and to join the NCS as an Associate member and the HS as a Registrant on graduation. Students on year 3 are required to maintain NCS membership throughout, and join the NCS as an Accredited Member on graduation. Chrysalis will issue appropriate certifi cation to all graduating students but only those meeting these criteria will be issued with certifi cation confi rming safety and readiness to practice.
