What do you think the powders might be used for?

Samp

Hindu people love playing tricks on each other at Holi by

smearing each other with paint or throwing coloured water about! Everybody gets very messy!

Samp

On the night of the full moon, huge bonfires are lit and, as the fire burns, people sing

songs and beat drums. Then they ask for the blessing of the

holy fire.

When the fire dies down, people carry the hot

embers to their homes so they can light their own fires in their houses.

On the first day of Holi, the full moon day, coloured powders called gulalgulalgulalgulal are put onto plates called thalithalithalithali. Then water is poured into a

Then, all the children, men and woman go off to visit

each other’s houses to smear paint on their friends’ faces

and clothes.

Samp

le Slide

Children sprinkle colours on the feet of their grownup neighbours.

It would be very rude for children to throw paint all over their neighbours.

Don’t the children get into trouble for throwing paint at

grownups?

Samp

le Slide

In the streets everyoneeveryoneeveryoneeveryone throws coloured powders and water balloons full of coloured

water at each other, even the children. Young people squirt coloured water from

water pistols and giant syringes until they are all covered with colours!

Samp

le Slide

Everyone wears white clothes so that when the paint and water are thrown, it stands out on

their white clothes.

Samp

le Slide

Then all the silliness comes to an end and everyone rushes home to have a bath to get

rid of all the mess!

Then they visit friends and family to wish each other happy Holi. All the houses

have a plate of sweets ready for their visitors.

Gujjia or gujia is a sweet pastry that is filled with almonds and raisins and deep fried. It is very popular at Holi time.

Samp

le Slide

People offer special foods, sweets, snacks and a special cool drink called thandaithandaithandaithandai to

their visitors. Thandai is made from milk and almonds.

Samp

le Slide

There are special events in the villages to celebrate Holi. They are called

Holi Mela – a Holi Fair. Everyone gets together to enjoy singing, dancing and

eating food from food stalls.

Samp

le Slide

People come to enjoy the colours and the friendship and buy souvenirs from the

craft stalls.

Samp

le Slide

In India people believe that it is important to celebrate Holi because

the festival brings everybody together in friendship. That’s why they say that even enemies become friends at Holi time.
