celebrated, it’s a very happy time and everyone has lots of fun!

People send cards to each other to say Happy Holi.

They give each other gifts at Holi. This is a gift set with
sweet pastries, a water syringe and little water balloons full
of coloured water.

Homes are cleaned and decorated with flowers. Special yantrayantrayantrayantra
patterns are made.

Holi means that it’s the end of winter and the beginning of spring.
People say that at Holi even enemies make friends. Sometimes village
communities give awards to those they think have been the silliest and made
them laugh the most!

You will see lots of coloured
powders for sale.
Shops in India sell coloured powders called gulal.

Hindu people love playing tricks on each other at Holi by
smearing each other with paint or throwing coloured water about! Everybody gets very messy!

On the night of the full moon, huge bonfires are lit and, as the fire burns, people sing
songs and beat drums. Then they ask for the blessing of the
holy fire.
When the fire dies down, people carry the hot
embers to their homes so they can light their own fires in their houses.

On the first day of Holi, the full moon day, coloured powders called gulalgulalgulalgulal are put onto plates called thalithalithalithali. Then water is poured into a
little pot called a lotalotalotalota.
Then the eldest man in the family sprinkles the colours onto everyone in his family to bring good luck.

Then, all the children, men and woman go off to visit
each other’s houses to smear paint on their friends’ faces
and clothes.

Children sprinkle colours on the feet of their grownup neighbours.
It would be very rude for children to throw paint all over their neighbours.
Don’t the children get into trouble for throwing paint at
grownups?

In the streets everyoneeveryoneeveryoneeveryone throws coloured powders and water balloons full of coloured
water at each other, even the children. Young people squirt coloured water from
water pistols and giant syringes until they are all covered with colours!

Everyone wears white clothes so that when the paint and water are thrown, it stands out on
their white clothes.

Then all the silliness comes to an end and everyone rushes home to have a bath to get
rid of all the mess!
Then they visit friends and family to wish each other happy Holi. All the houses
have a plate of sweets ready for their visitors.
Gujjia or gujia is a sweet pastry that is filled with almonds and raisins and deep fried. It is very popular at Holi time.

People offer special foods, sweets, snacks and a special cool drink called thandaithandaithandaithandai to
their visitors. Thandai is made from milk and almonds.

There are special events in the villages to celebrate Holi. They are called
Holi Mela – a Holi Fair. Everyone gets together to enjoy singing, dancing and
eating food from food stalls.

People come to enjoy the colours and the friendship and buy souvenirs from the
craft stalls.

In India people believe that it is important to celebrate Holi because
the festival brings everybody together in friendship. That’s why they say that even enemies become friends at Holi time.
