I. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
REPORT OF ASBESTOS SAMPLING INTRODUCTION On April 10, 2019, Environmental Assistance Group represented by Ed Kennedy, collected samples of roofing materials at Mission Viejo High School, Linda Vista Elementary School, Melinda Heights Elementary School, Santiago Elementary School, and the British Performance Building in the Saddleback Valley Unified School District. METHOD Representative samples were collected of visually different types (homogeneous areas) of roofing materials including roll roofing, tar and mastic, on the roof field, around roof penetrations, and at patches. Samples were taken on the covered walkways and on the main roofs of buildings. The sampling method including cutting or coring through all layers of materials down to the wood substrate. The samples were placed in sealed containers for transport to a NVLAP (Lab Code 101459-1) and DHS certified laboratory for analyses by Polarized Light Microscopy (PLM). A chain of custody was attached to the sample submittal sheets. After analysis, a report of analytical results was provided for inclusion in this report. Forensic Analytical Laboratory in Dominguez Hills California conducted the analyses. RESULTS The analyses of representative samples of homogeneous areas of roofing materials at Mission Viejo High School, Linda Vista Elementary School, Melinda Heights Elementary School, Santiago Elementary School showed all were none detected (ND) for asbestos. Analyses of Main Roof roofing materials on the British Performance Building showed that the black semi-fibrous patching mastic/tar aged grey on top contains 3% to 5% chrysotile asbestos. The layers of roll roofing and tar on the Main Roof are ND for asbestos. Attached Homogenous Area/Sampling Forms contain specific information regarding materials identified at each site. RECOMMENDATIONS Utilize a project design prepared by a Certified Asbestos Consultant (CAC) to retain an asbestos abatement contractor to complete the removal of all black semi-fibrous tar patches on the Main Roof at the British Performance Building. Patches to be removed down to the wood substrate and to six inches around each patch and/or remove completely from all parapet walls and roof penetrations.
