OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2012 19 I feel a chill in the air...the holidays must be near! When the nights get cooler our attention turns to decorating our homes for the fall and Christmas season. As our thoughts shift to holiday entertaining, many of us would like to update our living spaces. Some simple ways to achieve the desired look would be to freshen up your home by: • Painting a wall • Adding new throw pillows • Changing lighting or lamps and shades • Re-arranging furniture • Up-dating accessories • Re-purpose old pieces After achieving the look you desire, it will be time to retrieve your Christmas decorations from past years. Many of the same decorations can be used from year to year by blending new elements. The new buzz words for Christmas 2012 are Natural Elements, Burlap, Birch Bark, Metal, Vintage, Bells, Twigs, Battery Operated Candles, Lighted Branches, and String Lights. If assistance is needed in designing you unique look, contact your favorite designer or florist. The important thing is that everyone share in the fun of decorating. Some decorating materials used to achieve a new look and incorporate new ideas with the previous ones are by using; • Evergreens - balsam, fir, cedar, pine, spruce, boxwood, holly, ivy, and magnolia. • Fruit- apples, oranges, cranberries, pomegranates, lemons, and limes. • Grapevine • Driftwood • Textures- burlap, birch bark, twigs, pinecones, gum balls, and seed pods. Some design tips are: • Leave greenery in a bucket of water overnight in the garage and before using dip the ends in candle wax. • Provide a focal point or center of interest for the eye to rest on such as a nativity, deer, sleigh, or elves. • Proper scale is important. • Change old ribbon to the new natural look ( for example, twig, burlap, or moss) • Integrate new lighting ideas, such as lighted branches in the tree, on the mantle, or battery operated string lights for centerpieces and the door wreath or swag. Many of these new lighting concepts are on timers which make lighting more manageable. A room decorated with discrimination and good taste that harmonizes with the existing décor shows a sense of design and style. Let each creation reflect originality. Happy decorating! This is my favorite time of year. I welcome the cooler temperatures and for me, there is nothing more beautiful than driving through the mountains during the fall season to view the colorful

leaves. Isn’t it interesting that the reason the leaves change colors is because they are dying? Due to

the cooler temperatures, and shorter days, the leaves stop photosynthesizing and they fall to the ground. For us, the fallen leaves create work because we rake them and clean them out of our yards, but when God planned His creation, He had purpose in mind for the fallen leaves. He chose not to waste them. Instead, He chose to use them to fertilize the soil around the tree which enables the tree to produce new leaves in the spring. In fact, the ecosystem of a forest could not survive without the nutrients provided from the fallen leaves.

This reminds me of something else God chooses not to waste---my mistakes. He can take my life, including my mistakes, and use it all to bring glory to Himself. I have made plenty of mistakes, and Satan likes to remind me of each one. Satan wants me to believe that because of my mistakes, God cannot use me. He wants me to believe that my life is a waste because of the things I have done. You and I can find truth an encouragement in 2 Corinthians 5:17 which reads, “Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come." We are human and we make mistakes. Some mistakes have bigger consequences than others, but we have all done things that we later regret. The good news is that when we repent and surrender our lives to Christ, we become new creatures in Him.

Do you have past mistakes in your life that you feel enslaved to? Are your past mistakes preventing you from living the life God intends for you to live? I want to remind you that in Christ, you are set free! In Christ, you are no longer bound to your past, and through Him, you are no longer powerless. I believe one of the best testimonies someone can have for Christ is a changed life. When people see a changed life, they see the power of a saving God. Just as God does not waste the fallen leaves, He also doesn’t waste our mistakes. He works all things together for our good and His glory (Romans 8:28). He can take a life full of mistakes and transform it into something new and beautiful.

May we seek to glorify God in all that we do, and may our lives be the living proof that we serve the One who is able to change lives! Let go of your past, my friend, and walk boldly with Christ. In Him, new things have come!

24 OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2012

Our summer was a scorcher and rainfall was so very short. Outside workers suffered and so did landscape and garden plantings. But, it is a new season

and time to begin afresh with plans for the next growing season. First, an assessment of drought and heat damage is needed. Plants that did

survive the summer heat and drought will need to be replaced. A good idea would be to evaluate the varieties that did not survive and possibly replace them with plants that are more drought hardy.

Sod that was lost should have already been reseeded if it was cool season grass (Fescue) or with rye grass if it is warm season (Bermuda). Bermuda grass will need to be reseeded in late April or early May of next year if it was lost. The ryegrass will provide ground cover and beauty for the winter season, but, may need to be killed with chemicals in the spring in time for the re-establishment of Bermuda sod, by seeding. Of course, Bermuda may be established with new sod at any time the sod is available.

Now is the time to clean up vegetable gardens. All left over plant material should be removed and disposed of. Probably best to not place spent plants into compost. Plant diseases may thrive in the compost pile or bin only to contaminate new plantings when the compost is used later. Areas designated for early spring planting should now be bedded with tall beds for the early crops such as onions, beets, cold crops, and green peas. Tall beds that freeze and thaw over the winter will really work well in mid to late February when these crops need to be planted. A small tiller is perfect to work tops of the beds for early planting and keep the tops of the beds dry and warm for days or weeks before flat tilled soil.

Fall Gardening

Choresby Bob Whitworth

Gardening tools deserve some special care now. Small engines should be winterized, either by running them completely out of fuel or the addition of a fuel stabilizer and storing them full of fuel. Crankcase oil should be changed and filled to proper level for operation. Tilling blades should be sharpened if needed and coated with a light coat of oil. The used engine oil works well for this. Hand tools should, likewise, be sharpened and coated with oil, making sure to remove any rust that has built up. Wooden handles should be lightly sanded and a coat of boiled linseed oil applied. All equipment should be stored in a clean dry place.

Fall planting time for shrubs and trees is here. Deciduous trees and shrubs should always be transplanted during their dormant (leafless) stage. That time is from November to March. For most plantings a rather large planting hole should be dug. And, in bed plantings, an excellent method is to add any desired material and thoroughly till the bed with a rototiller. A word of caution about the planting of fairly large or tall plants is to be sure to firm up the soil around the plants. Sometimes, they tend to fall over when beds receive excessive water either from irrigation or rainfall. Simply tramp the soil underfoot and irrigate without flooding the first few times. Trees should always have stakes and ties installed on three sides of newly planted ones.

Bob Whitworth obtained both his bachelor’s and master’s degree from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville and enjoyed a long career in agriculture. He retired as the Director of the Tipton County Extension Office.

Follow These Tips to Do it Safely

Is your doctor recommending more physical activity for better health and to help control your diabetes? Talk with her about the types of physical activity

that might work best for you. Then:

Check your blood glucose before and after you exercise. If it is too low or too high, you may want to wait to exercise until it is within the safe range. Talk to your doctor about your particular safe range and about what to do in those cases.

If you take insulin, make sure your blood glucose does not get too low during

or after activity. Always wear a medical ID bracelet. Keep something handy to treat low blood glucose, such as fruit juice, glucose

tablets or a snack.
