Come, thou long-expected Jesus… December is a month of waiting. Some people wait for snow, others wait for it to melt. Many look forward to

the end of the month, when daylight starts to add minutes each day, banishing darkness. Some people wait for

Christmas presents, cookies, and music, while others dread their appearance each year. Each of us has things for

which we wait, and things which we do not look forward to.

As Christians, we look forward to more. We look forward to celebrating the birth of the Christ child, the one

who was sent to fulfill with hopes and fears, the one born to set people free – free from fears and sins, free from

terror and foreboding, free from anxiety and stress. This little baby, born in Bethlehem, was to save the entire

world. The angels couldn’t help but sing. The shepherds couldn’t contain their joy as they returned to their

flocks after finding Jesus in the manger. The Magi traveled from afar, bringing gifts for the child, and

worshipped this infant king.

There is much to distract us at this time of year, all of the cards and photos, baking and cooking, buying and

wrapping, decorating and planning. All of these things are good, as long as we keep them in perspective. We do

these things to help celebrate the birth of Jesus!

So how do we prepare for this long-expected Jesus? May I offer some suggestions:

Come to worship each Sunday in Advent to hear the back story of Jesus’ birth.

Attend the Sunday school programs, to hear the children once again tell the story in both ancient and

modern contexts.

Grace – December 9, 9 am

Big Grove – December 9, 10:30 am (pot luck following, all invited)

Crow River – December 16, 10:30 am

Attend the Grace Lutheran Church Women’s annual Christmas program on Wednesday, December 12,

7:30 pm. The program will be an area men’s choir.

Attend the Blue Christmas service at Trinity in Brooten at 4 pm on Sunday, December 16. This is a

service aimed at recognizing that not everyone is happy at Christmas time, because they have

experienced the death of a loved one, or some other trauma. This service gives space for non-happy

emotions.

The schools have programs and concerts! At BBE, the grade 7-12 band concert is on Monday,

December 3 at 7 pm at the high school, and the K-4 elementary program is at 2:30 on Wednesday,

December 12.

Blessed Advent and Merry Christmas to all!
