Altar of Repose, Ambo, Altar of Sacrifice: Alive with St. Columba! In June of 2020, you might remember that we commissioned these masterpieces to be crafted by the same Italian studio in Italy who carved the “Our
Sacrifice to God” wooden relief. Our St. Columba statue is holding the Book of Kells from which these carvings have their origin. Our Altar of Repose underneath the Tabernacle has the unique image of Jesus, taken from the Book of Kells. The Book of Kells is Ireland’s greatest national art treasure. It is an illuminated manuscript that presents a Latin translation of the Four Gospels, accompanied by a dazzling array of decorative ornamentation, iconography and illustration. The book is named after the Abbey of Kells in County Meath, Ireland, monks from the order of St. Columbkille created its pages. There is historical speculation that St. Columbkille himself did some of the manuscript and its illustrations.
The image on Altar of Repose is a representation of Christ enthroned in majesty in heaven. Christ is presented at the center of the image, seated on a throne, and surrounded by four angels, holding the Book of Life on which are inscribed the names of the Saints. As is often the case in
early religious art, Jesus is pictured as a man from the place and time the local artists would have known. For this reason, the image of Jesus in the Book of Kells has light-colored hair. This image of Christ contains peacocks, which are a symbol of eternal life, because of the ancient belief that dead peacocks did not rot. Also, the dazzling display of color in a peacock’s feathers serve as a metaphor of majesty. The two peacocks are set against a second image: that of a chalice from which vines are sprouting. The chalice is a symbol of the Eucharist; the vines are symbols of Christ’s lineage as the Son of Man going back to Adam and the “true Israel.” Common to Celtic art are the three leveled spirals surrounding the entire image. They represent the Trinity and the three components of the saving mystery of Jesus: life, death, and Resurrection. Celtic knots found in this image and on the Altar of Sacrifice are also taken from the Book of Kells. Celtic knots on the Main Altar of the church are representative of eternal life we have in Christ – having no beginning and no end. On the Ambo, we have a third image from the Book of Kells representing the four Gospel writers: Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. Clockwise from the top left you have Matthew as the winged man, Mark as the winged lion, Luke as the winged calf and John as the Eagle. It is so special to have this direct connection to Columba in our church and the monks who brought the Gospel to life. Be sure to check out the carvings for yourselves. HABITS of being a disciple will return next week. Never forget, the Lord is with us, always!

ASK THE DEACON Q: Did Jesus really know He was God from birth or was this something He’d come to realize as He grew? A: WOW! This is a most interesting question that caused me to do some research before I could reply. To be honest, we have to first define what we mean by “God” – not for us today, because we have 2,000 years of Christian perception and understanding to support us, but what was the meaning of “God” to a first-century Jew? To one living at the time of Jesus, “God” would have been thought of as One who lived in heaven. So if a question was asked of Jesus, “Do you think you are God?” they would mean did He think He was the One who lived in heaven. The question would be inappropriate because, very obviously, Jesus was living here on earth. We have no scriptural record of that question ever being put to our Lord, but His relationship with God certainly was a point of reference at least once. In St. Mark’s Gospel, a man addresses Jesus as “good teacher” and Jesus replied “Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone.” In this somewhat off-putting response, Jesus shows a distancing between Himself and the term “God.” In the scene where our Lord appears to the Apostles, and specifically St. Thomas after His Resurrection, Thomas calls Jesus “my Lord and my God” and Jesus does not correct him. The understanding here is that by this time in the ministry of Christ, at least to the Apostles and Gospel writers, the definition of the word “God” was expanded to mean the Father in heaven and the Son on Earth. This was not a reflection of any change in Jesus, but a change or growth in the perception of our Christian belief as to who He was. Another example of that growth we still use today happened during the Council of Nicea in the year 325, where the Son of God was described as “begotten, not made, true God from true God.” You see our understanding and perception of God continues to grow and, in a way, evolve over time. So, back to the question, “Did Jesus know who He was? Did He know He was God?” The simplest answer has to be yes, however we have no definitive proof of that because there is so much of His life we have no record of. We do have record of Jesus' awareness of His relationship with God and that is the source of His ability to speak with overwhelming authority. Further, there are no accounts in Scripture of Jesus discovering something about Himself He didn’t know before. The scene at the Baptism of our Lord is designed to tell the readers and John the Baptist who Jesus is and not to tell Him who He is. What? You have another question? It’ll have to wait till next week!

WHAT DO WE DO DURING OUR TIME IN ADORATION?
Pope Emeritus, Benedict XVI writes, “communicating with Christ demands that we gaze on Him, allow Him to gaze on us, listen to Him, get to know Him.” “The time you spend with Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament is the best time you will spend on earth. Each moment that you spend with Jesus will deepen your union with Him and make your soul everlastingly more glorious and beautiful in Heaven, and will help bring about everlasting peace on earth." – St. Mother Teresa of Calcutta
