Sheila Baker, Beta President but the timing overlapped with another opportunity as well as another obligation. I considered just not attending the workshop. But as I read the directions to the Shiloh Park location, it sounded like I would be driving near my grandparents' farm. I headed to the retreat realizing that I was one of our family members that really did not possess an artistic gene, and this would probably test my creativity patience to the limit. Less than 10 minutes into the drive, my frame of mind had completely turned around. The weather was absolutely beautiful. As I was driving north on 37, fall colors seemed to increase with each passing mile. The sprays of red, orange, yellow, and even brown were so beautiful. I kept thinking "Please don't stop. I just wish this would continue for more than another week or two." Then the childhood landmarks from my many trips to the farm started to appear. Although the surroundings had changed quite a bit, the major landmarks were still there. When I pulled into the park I immediately saw my college roommate, Nancy Hoff, getting out of her car. We started our projects that evening. I am thrilled to tell you that I completed all the projects without shedding a tear! We made rings, a bracelet, a leaf painting, a manger scene, a fairy garden, a beautiful rose pendant, and a name tag. All were projects that one could share with a class or children of any age. We roasted marshmallows, sang, listened to a storyteller and had hot chocolate by the fire in the shelter house. It doesn't get any better than that! Thank you, DKG! Young Educators as New MembersSherry Watkins, 2nd Vice President/Membership Chair

As we consider sharing thegift of Delta Kappa Gammamembership with newmembers, especially withyounger educators, we canbenefit from research on thedesires of today’s youngprofessionals.  According torecent research, youngprofessionals are looking forthree things—opportunities

for professional development, opportunitiesfor leadership, and opportunities to make adifference.  You can readily see that the gift ofDKG membership provides opportunities for all ofthese.  It is important that we provide leadershipopportunities early in the Delta Kappa Gammaexperience of our new initiates—this can begin assimply as being a greeter and distributing nametags at a meeting to progressing into serving oncommittees and assuming other leadership roles.Chapter programs provide professionaldevelopment as they are focused on our sevenpurposes.  Encouraging our young initiates toattend state/international meetings is importantas professional development opportunitiesabound and members are able to see a muchbroader scope of our society.  In addition our DKGmembers provide young professionals theopportunity to have wonderful role models andmentors.  Making our new initiates aware of the manyscholarship and grant opportunities available tothem at all levels through DKG can proveinvaluable as educators fulfill their professionaldevelopment and licensing responsibilities.  Themany DKG chapter, state, and internationaloutreach programs give additional opportunitiesfor young educators to make a difference.  Soplease look to young educators as new membersof your chapter.  We can share our many DKG giftswith them, and they can share their gifts ofpotential, commitment, and talent with us.  Withan International goal of “everyone getting one,”let’s make sure each of us finds one person withwhom we can share our gift of membership thisyear.

World Fellowship: Paying Forward to Touch the FutureLeslie Hamman, International Projects Chair

As 2013 is coming to a close, we lookforward to 2014 through bright eyes filledwith hope. This is what lucky, yet worthy,World Fellowship recipients feel. With thisscholarship, we are providing opportunitiesto further education, brighten futures, and opportunities to “pay itforward” when recipients return home. We can all imagine how thisfeels, and some may even know, but I would like to share thewords of a former recipient who is now home in Pakistan, buildinga brighter future for herself and those around her. Fatima Hashmishared her thoughts with me. Below is a portion of those thoughtsthat I would like to share with you.

My interaction, professionally, academically andsocially with the American people was a criticalcomponent to my overall experience in the US duringthe last two years. I understood their compassion tohelp others, and this motivated me to help academicinstitutions here in Pakistan. I saved a few hundreddollars while I was at Duke University, and when Ireturned to Pakistan - inspired by the DKG fellowshipthat I had been awarded - I donated that money to aschool for underprivileged children in Pakistan, withthe hope that those children will value and benefitfrom another person’s generosity as much as I did… Through the World Fellowship program, I believe theDKG has planted seeds of compassion and generosityin the recipients, and more importantly, imparted thevalue of education for women in our societies.

As you can see from Fatima’s thoughts, our World Fellowshipdollars have the potential to reach much farther than just ourrecipients. Please make a World Fellowship donation a priority foryour chapter. If a World Fellowship donation is not alreadyincluded in your budget, please consider adding it while looking atwhat funds are available (or fundraising activities) to contribute tothis cause. World fellowship is an opportunity to touch the futureof very deserving young women and their home countries. Thankyou for your support of World Fellowship! (Donation forms can be found on the DKG website.)

Election process to be considered at 2014 International ConventionMembers voting at the 2014 International Convention will consider proposed amendmentsthat determine whether to continue with our current process of delegate voting or toinstitute a general election that allows every member to vote in the election ofAdministrative Board and elected committee members. All members in attendance at the convention vote on proposed amendments to theConstitution and the International Standing Rules. Officers and elected committee membersare currently elected by state organization presidents who have one vote for every fiveactive and reserve members. The state organization president may cast all her state’s votesfor a particular nominee, or she may split her vote if there is more than one nominee. If the convention votes to allow every member to vote, all members will be able to vote forthe members of the Administrative Board. All members would vote for president, the vicepresidents, the member-at-large, and Finance Committee members. Only members within aregion will vote for their regional director and regional representatives to the NominationsCommittee. Only Latin American and Canadian members would vote for their own arearepresentative. Members would vote electronically or by requested paper ballot. The Ad Hoc Elections Process Committee (EPC), approved by the 2012 Executive Board andappointed by President Dr. Beverly Helms, has researched costs, consulted the Finance

Committee, studied the nominations process, communicated withmembers, and solicited member input via Survey Monkey and atregional conferences. Various vending companies have submitted estimated costs of anelectronic election ranging between $15,000 and $25,000 perelection. The 2012-2014 Finance Committee is aware of thepossibility of an every member voting election process. If the changeis approved, the 2014-2016 Finance Committee will have the task ofbudgeting for the new voting process. The ad hoc committee submitted to the Constitution Committeeproposed amendments that would make a general election possible. The convention has the final authority whether to approve ordisapprove proposed amendments. The decision rests with the voteof the 2014 convention. Go to www.dkg.org to find more information about a general electionand the full results of surveys taken in 2013 on the Ad Hoc DKGElection Process Committee page.
