"Mine! Mine!" The word rebounds off a wearyparent's ears as they struggle with a sobbingtoddler. "No," we patiently urge our off-spring, "that doesn't belong to you, you haveto give it back." But how mightily those littlehands will toil to keep the desired object! It'sa trait we carry throughout our lives, al-though the items tend to increase in size andvalue. The teddy bear or train is traded upfor a mink coat or Mercedes, but the cry isstill the same, "Mine!" and God help anyonewho attempts to take it away.We forget in all this grasping that we too areowned. Our hearts, minds, bodies, yes ourvery lives are someone else's property. Godour Father has full rights of ownership toeverything we like to call ours: time, talentand treasure. There is not one item we pos-sess or one ability we display that has notcome from Him, on loan as it were. And Heasks only that we repay Him with the samealacrity that we repay our earthly debtors, perhaps with slightly greater willingness."Repay to Caesar what is Caesar's," Jesustells us, "and to God what is God's."
