International Conference on Armed
Movements and Post-Conflict Colombia
Conferencia Internacional sobre Movimientos
Armados y Posconflicto en Colombia
It is my great pleasure to welcome this extraordinary group of scholars to the
University of South Florida. The historic agreement between the Colombian
government and the FARC ended a conflict that endured for over half a century.
We are so pleased to be supporting research on armed movements, the peace
process, and the implementation of the peace accords; and very happy to be
working with CLACSO on this important initiative.
And we are, as always, grateful for the support of USF's Research One and USF
World.
Rachel May
Research One y USF World.
Message of the Director
Mensaje de la Directora
The conference will provide a venue for scholars who study the history and
current situation of armed groups and the implementation of the
Colombian Peace Accords. This agreement, which was ratified by the
Colombian Congress in December 2016, ended a civil conflict between the
Rebel Armed Forces (FARC) and the Colombian government that had
lasted more than half a century.
There are several key Colombian scholars who have spent their
professional lives studying this conflict who will be presenting their work.
And the new accord (which provides for development and reconstruction
assistance throughout the country) will provide many opportunities for
scholars to analyze and contribute to Colombia's peace.
This conference is sponsored by the Consejo Latinoamericano de
Ciencias Sociales (CLACSO), USF World and Research One.

"Few people would doubt today that the internal armed conflict in Colombia overflowed in its dynamics the confrontation between the armed actors."
"To clarify and to remove from silence and oblivion the terrible violations of human rights in our country is a challenge that will surely compromise the determined efforts of several generations of Colombians. We are in times of remembrance, but reconstruction is just beginning. "
"The contemporary armed confrontation exacerbated particularities of the national political tradition, especially sectarianism, which had its highest expression in the dirty war"
“(...)between 1958 and 2012 the armed conflict has caused the death of at least 220,000 people, a figure that surpasses the estimates suggested until now"
"At the heart of the violence, as evidenced by the reports of Bojayá, Cauca and Bahía Portete, there is also the dispute for the territories, which includes not only peasant communities, but also indigenous and Afro-descendant communities."
