From the Counselor—Trait of the Month-Self Control Lyndsay Morris

Self Control is the ability to regulate emotions, thoughts, and actions by one’s own will. Self-control keeps us from eating an entire bag of chips at one setting or throwing a chair when we become angry. Self-control is developed through practice. When we practice being still, we are able to quiet the mind and body and be-come self-aware. When we practice listening to our heart, mind, and body, we develop the ability to self-regulate. For example, we can practice tuning out distractions to focus on our school work. We develop strength when we are able to overcome challenges, such as focusing in certain situations. Another example of self-control is listening to our positive self-talk when someone is picking on us. Instead of believing what they say about us, we know our strength comes from within and not from other people’s labels. Our positive self-talk will reassure us that their negativity is about them and not about us. We remember that we are strong, calm, and capable. Lastly, we can practice raising our hand to be called on or waiting our turn to speak while talking in a group of people. Listening is the foundation for self-control. When we listen to ourselves, we become aware. When we listen to other people, we become informed. Listening to ourselves and other people is a necessary skill to live happy, healthy lives.

Principal’s Corner – Follow My Lead

Tim Carstens

Nothing can fully prepare someone to be in a leadership position. I found this out early in my teaching career. I had taken all the requisite courses that Washington State University said I needed to have in order to be an effective teacher. When I was hired in the Auburn School District I got to take another class in “Effective Edu-cation”. What neither of these programs prepared me for was the intensity with which I was looked up to by my students and the families.

I was only 22 when I started teaching and was ill equipped to deal with the pressures that came with the job. It was a steep learning curve, but by the time I left the elementary ranks to the middle school, I was pretty sure I had a pretty good handle on it. Then I got to work with sixth grade students and 7th grade athletes and at the same time high school “C” team girls’ basketball players. This quickly revealed that I still had areas in which I could improve.

I then took classes at the University of Washington for my principal credentials, where again; I thought I would be fully prepared for the role of principal. But again, there were no classes that focused on the role modeling process for principals. I have to say, that after shelling out the money for 2 different degrees, I felt like I should have gotten all the answers I needed.

As a classroom and school leader, I am very careful with what I say and do because of the number of eyes that are on me at any given time. That’s not to say that I will waiver from what I truly believe is fair and right. Most parents know that I will call it like it is and continue to hold students accountable as long as I believe it is in the best interest of the child. However, being human, I occasionally let my emotions get the better of me. But the passion behind the emotions is what makes me passionate about education as well.

The one area of my life that I continue to grow daily is as a father and a husband. You can take all the par-enting classes and read every book ever written about parenting and you still would not be prepared for the significance of the job. More than anything, the role of parent and spouse is the most important role I play. It is parenting that has revealed to me how my actions speak so loudly. Our children look to us for guidance, correction, and direction. They see everything we do. While they say imitation is the highest form of flattery, it is also the clearest mirror to one’s own behavior.

With this in mind, it is important that while we are around our children and the other students at school, the highest example is set. Here are 5 things you can do when you come to the school to provide positive role modeling:

1. Use the crosswalk-when students see parents using the crosswalk, they are more likely to use the crosswalk when the parents aren’t there. This is an important safety point.

2. Don’t drive in the bus zone-students ask me quite often why some parents ignore the signs that say “Buses Only”. I don’t have an answer for them.

3. Hang up the cell phone in the building-students all see the signs on the doors that ask people to end their phone conversations before entering the building. This teaches the students respect for others and posted rules

4. Don’t smoke on school grounds or the area around school-not only is second hand smoke a real health concern, it is against district policy and state law to smoke on school grounds.

5. Watch your language-students will repeat anything they hear. Please make sure what they are hearing is worth repeating.

Remember, when we are looking to change the way students act and feel, the quickest way is to be the change we want to see in others.

5th Grade Camp Vinnette Lang

There are few things more exciting in the elementary school experience than 5th grade camp. Relationships, collaboration, fun, and connecting with nature are all benefits of the camp experience. Your child will be camping at Lake Retreat Baptist Camp in Ravensdale, which is the facility used for Camp Auburn.

This year, as it has been in the past school years, will be a wonderful opportunity for our students to build life-long connections with friends, staff, teachers and parents in an enriching educational setting. Fifth grade teachers at Ilalko, Lakeland Hills, and Gildo Rey Elementaries are working diligently to make this the best camp experience yet!

If you have “MAIL” that you would like to be delivered to your child at camp, there will be boxes in the front office for everyday that they are in camp.

Our scheduled camp dates are Tuesday, May 21st through Friday, May 24th.

Note: Official forms/final payment will be due Friday, May 10th.

Many of our parents have asked some important questions in the past. These are good to know for future 5th grade parents.

· Q: Is camp mandatory?

A: Camp is not mandatory; however, very few students choose not to go. Each school year we have 2-3 stu-dents at each campus who do not attend. Students who do not go to Camp Auburn will still need to report to school for those days, as activities will be planned.

· Q: What is the cost for camp?

A: The cost for camp this year is $165.00 per student and has been the same rate for the past four years. Throughout the school year there has been several opportunities for Camp Auburn fundraising, this helps lower the cost of camp.

WE WISH OUR CAMPERS A HAPPY, FUN, SUNNY EXPERIENCE!

______ Committee Chair – Committee Name

______PTA Member

Is this an existing program or a new program? ________________

Total Amount Requested $____________

How will the funds be used? (Attach a separate page if necessary.)

Who will benefit from this program?

Why should the PTA fund this request?

In 1993, when we applied to the IRS for tax-exempt status, we stated that our PTA “was formed to provide an organ-

ized way for parents to aid children in the school community. This was done through the development of common

goals and objectives which involve PTA members and members of the community in the development of programs for the health, welfare, safety and education of children in the home, school and community. To foster these goals, Ilalko

PTA will conduct the follow activities:

Provide educational and entertaining assemblies that the school is unable to provide,

Provide funds to teachers and /or classes for EDUCATIONAL equipment that the school cannot provide,

Organize a reading program to encourage children to read and parents to read to their children,

Organize after-school activities to give children enjoyable activities.”

When reviewing your budget request, the board will rely on this statement to the IRS to determine if your request can be granted.
