Saint Valentine’s DaySaint Valentine’s Day

Every February, candy, flowers, and gifts are exchanged between loved ones, all in the name of St. Valentine. Valentine lived in Rome during the third century. At that time Rome was ruled by an emperor named Claudius. Claudius wanted to have a big army. He expected men to volunteer to join. Many men just did not want to fight in wars. They did not want to leave their wives and families.

Page 6: I. Lead-in Questions 1.Do you have a favorite love song? What is its name? Who is the singer? Can you sing or hum the tune? 2.Can you think of anything

This made Claudius furious. He thought that if men were not married, they would not mind joining the army. So Claudius decided not to allow any more marriages. Young people thought his new law was cruel. Valentine was a priest. Even after Emperor Claudius passed his law, Valentine kept on performing marriage ceremonies secretly. One night, Valentine was caught and thrown in jail. The daughter of the prison guard was allowed to visit Valentine in the cell.

On the day Valentine was to die, he left a little note thanking her for her friendship and loyalty. Valentine signed it, “Love from your Valentine.” That note started the custom of exchanging love messages on Valentine’s Day. It was written on the day he died, February 14, 269A.D. Now, every year on this day, people remember. But most importantly, they think about love and friendship.

Organization Narratives usually have a beginning, a

middle and an end. The setting is often given in the beginning; the middle describes the sequence of events that make up your narrative; the significance of your story is brought out in the end.

Purpose In most cases narration is used for a

purpose. You do not write a narrative for its own sake. Rather, you tell a story to prove a point. Thus, you should make sure that the final impression your narrative leaves on the reader answers your purpose. To achieve this, you should select and arrange the details of your story with great care.
