XIX Hallowell Family JOHN HALLOWELL,* the founder of the family of that name in Pennsylvania, came to Darby, Pa., in 1682, with his wife Mary and their children, Sarah, Thomas and Mary. He brought a certificate from Friends Meeting at Hucknow, in the Parish of Sutton, Nottinghamshire, England, dated 12 mo. 19, 1682-83. He settled for a time near Darby, where six other children were born, John, Elizabeth, Hannah, Samuel, Benjamin and Jane. In 1696 he bought a tract of 630 acres in Abington Township, west of Willow Grove. He took up his residence near Weldon, where the remainder of his life was spent. He married, first, in 1672, Sarah, daughter of Francis Clay. She and their son John, born 12 mo. 8, 1672, both died in England. He married second, in 1675, Mary, daughter of Thomas Holland.f THOMAS HALLOWELL, son of John and Mary (Holland) Hallo- well, born in Nottinghamshire 1 mo. 6, 1679, died 12 mo. 14, 1734, ac- quired 220 acres of the Abington plantation of his father in 1702, and it passed to his son William in 1730. Thomas Hallowell married at Darby Meeting 1 mo. 12, 1702, Rosamond Till, daughter of John Till of Stafford- shire, a sister to Ann Till who married Jonathan Heacock. (See No. VI, c, Chapter XX.) They had children, John, Mary, William, Rosamond, Elizabeth, Sarah, Thomas, Samuel, and Joseph. WILLIAM HALLOWELL, son of Thomas and Rosamond (Till) Hallowell, born in 1707, married, first, Margaret, daughter of Mathias and Mary (Potts) Tyson of Abington. THOMAS HALLOWELL, son of John and Mary (Holland) Hallo-well, born in Nottinghamshire 1 mo. 6, 1679, died 12 mo. 14, 1734, ac-quired 220 acres of the Abington plantation of his father in 1702, and itpassed to his son William in 1730. Thomas Hallowell married at DarbyMeeting 1 mo. 12, 1702, Rosamond Till, daughter of John Till of Stafford-shire, a sister to Ann Till who married Jonathan Heacock. (See No. VI,c, Chapter XX.) He married Ann Jarrett, daughter ofWilliam and Ann (Lukens) Jarrett, of Horsham. She was born 11 mo. 26,1787, and died 7 mo. 29, 1867.

28. MARTHA HALLOWELL' (John,' John R. 2), daughter of JohnRoberts and Ann (Jarrett) Hallowell, was born near Bethayres, 1 mo. 10,1821, died 3 mo. 5, 1904. She married Edwin Satterthwaite, who ownedand operated a large farm and nursery one mile east of Jenkintown, inAbington Township. He was a prominent stock raiser and fruit grower,surpassing anyone in the state as a fruit grower. He was a son of Abeland Susannah (Claypoole) Satterthwaite of Abington where he was born10 mo. 25, 1818, and died 3 mo. 15, 1904.

He was one of the incorpor-ators and directors of Jenkintown National Bank. He married, 5 mo. 22,1851, Hannah S. Lloyd, born 3 mo. 9, 1831, daughter of John and Sidnea(Paul) Lloyd, of Moreland.

39. ISAAC H. CLOTHIER' (John,' Isaac, 2 Hannah 3 ), son of Caleband Hannah F. (Hallowell) Clothier, born 11 mo. 5, 1837, in Philadelphia,entered the mercantile business in Philadelphia in 1860 as a member ofthe firm of Morris, Clothier & Lewis, Cloth Merchants, Second and Chest-nut Streets. In 1868 in partnership with Justus Strawbridge, under thefirm name of Strawbridge & Clothier, he started the retail dry goods estab-lishment at Eighth and Market Streets, which is now one of the leadingdepartment stores in Philadelphia. It has been managed since its incep-tion by the founders and their sons. Isaac Clothier was for many yearsthe most active manager of Swarthmore College and his family are stillactive in its support. He was a director of a number of the leading finan-cial institutions of Philadelphia. He died, 1 mo. 15, 1921, at his home"Ballytore," IVynnewood, near Philadelphia. He married, 9 mo. 1,1864, Mary C. He was a lineal descendant of John and Mary (Holland)Hallowell, the founders of the family in Pennsylvania, but was not adescendant of John Hallowell who married Martha Roberts, the an-cestors of the branch of the family treated of in the preceding pages.However, three of his children married descendants of Thomas andAlice Roberts, therefore a brief sketch of him and his family may be ofinterest in connection with a history of his cousins.
