The line was never theproperty of BR or LNERalthough their locomotives~ a d e good use of it. However,In September 1872 Mr Whartonadvised the NER he was willingto sell for the p r i nc e l y sumof £10,000, a fortune then. MrHarrison, the engineer for NERwas asked to investigate thishe did and recommended it;purchase.

Have you ever wondered whythere was a double bridge atClaphow i n s t ~ a d of theordinary single one? Simpletruth was subsidence - and thelower bridge was built tostrengthen toe upper one.

The r a i lway line was theproperty of J T Wharton, whowas paid wayleave (a kind ofrent) on the ironstone passingover the bridge. The amount ofwayleave varied from ahalfpenny to a three halfpennyper ton, depending on thepresent price of pig iron.

If I don't get there veL' ysoon, I'll surely wet mydrawers,I only got there just in timebut found those bolted doors.Panic then befell me so Ijumped back in my car,I had to make it t o my home(it isn't very far).

But lorries and slow tractorsI couldn't overtake,And to the bathroom in myhome , I just could not make. With pounding heart andscreech of brake and feelingvery harrassed,I stood in glor y, soaking wetand I can say embarrassed.

Please open up t hose toilets, consider my request,And now that you have read mypoem I'm sure you'll do yourbest.

By this time mining was in myblood and like all my forbearst ae r e was only one place forme, "in the stone". This meantthat now I had to fill theempty tubs to earn my living.

I worked in t he c onv e n t ionalfootball shorts, but Herbywore a ~air of his wife's navyblue knickers; wi th hisknobbly knees he cut a comicalfigure, "God bless him".

Unlike the pitbottom, conditionswere rather primitivein-by, bait ' was takenwhere and when you

could, and being milesunderground the lack of freshair meant miners had to workin very little clothing.

One day the mine manager HarryGarbutt asked him if he wouldchange his garb for one shiftas he was bringing visitorsinto the mine face to see forthemselves the conditions weworked under. Herby was quiteadamant that he wouldn'tchange for anybody, the navyknickers were good enough for"their lass" and him soanybody else didn't matter.

I honestly think our visitors, three women and two men, quiteenjoyed the experience.

Every mine and village had itscharacters, none more so thana driver from Brotton calledBilly Marshall, affectionatelycalled "Shi:nmo".

The introduction of cranners(mechanical loaders) andelectric drilling machinesrevolutionised mining g r e a t Lyfrom the days of our fathers.

Tragically his horse wa skilled when it was struck bysome full tubs that had brokenaway down an incline. Laterwhen asked by the undermanager what had happened,Billy replied, "I wa s lookingat my off tak (pay slip) whenmy hoss looked over meshoulder and dropped dead".

By "fat" Marsay(Edited by Jim Ramige)

Even though .mi ni ng wa s a hardway to make a living, something went from a closely knitcommunity when they wereeventually closed.

One particular shift myregular mate was off sick soGeor ge Tokarski, JoJo to hismat e s , Ivasse n t tomate me.Having filled up all the loosestone we were just cleaning uparound the face whilst waitingfor the drillers to finishdrilling a round of holes. ,wnen all of a sudden there wasan almighty crack, and piecesof stone started falling fromthe roof. JoJo not knowingwhat. was happening stoodtransfixed. I shoulder-chargedhim to one s ide and then'jumped to the other.

We narrowly escaped beingflattened by a piece of ' stoneappcox 7 feet square by a footthick. Many times afterwardswhen we met in our local, 'chatting over a pint of beer,a grateful JoJo thanked me forsaving his life.
