Being thankfulYes, I am thankful for so much.Earlier this week it was cold. Very cold. Later in the week the temperature was in the 70s.I celebrated both extremes. No grumbling and complaining because, as my elders used to say, “some

folks didn’t wake up today.”I also thought about all the postings I’ve seen on Facebook where “friends” are sharing information

about their loved ones and asking for prayers because there are illnesses and deaths. There were constant updates from hospital rooms and nursing homes. If Facebook has done nothing, it has shone a light on the many issues that folks face, which lets us

know that we are not alone. If you ever need a reality check, spend at least 30 minutes on Facebook and you’re sure to find

someone who is dealing with what they believe to be insurmountable challenges -- until they read about someone else’s journey!

On Facebook a few “friends” have said they were taking a break from complaining -- going 24 hours or 30 days. I say “good luck” to some because they aren’t satisfied unless they are complaining.

Instead of feeling sad about the loved ones who have transitioned over the past year, I will spend my time recalling those pleasant memories, times that made me laugh, laugh until I cried or loved until I felt my heart would burst.

Sure this is a time when people appear to look to family more. It would be wonderful if as much effort was made on a consistent basis.

Makes you wonder what people did before there were holidays. How about waking up every day and telling folks you love them?Don’t wait until that person is on life support or worse, in the coffin. It is important to embrace who you are and who those around you are. Find and build on your spiritual

foundation. Show love. Pick your battles. Find out what’s really important in life so that you can live life to the fullest.

When you finally “get it,” that’s when life really opens up for you. You won’t worry so much about what others think or say and you won’t spend your life making others miserable. Be thankful for life, people and experiences and live a life that will make folks be thankful for yours.

For each day we have on this earth, like my friend Ramona says, make it a good one!

This past Saturday, November 15th, marked the start of the Affordable Care Act’s (ACA) 2014 open enrollment period. From November 15th to February 15th, millions of Americans will have the opportunity to shop for and enroll in customized health insurance plans most suited to their personal needs.

In spite of the initial difficulties with the website during the 2014 rollout, the ACA has evolved into a thriving and effective healthcare coverage system serving millions of people across the United States. Statistics provided from the first open enrollment period show that this historic law is performing well.

By ensuring that millions of students, workers, and families across the U.S. are able to reap the benefits of newfound health security, in addition to the personal and economic freedoms provided as a result.

In 2011, the ACA made healthcare more accessible and affordable for millions of Americans by saving consumers $9 billion. In fact, during the first open enrollment period in October of 2013, nearly 7 out of 10 people who selected a plan through the Health Insurance Marketplace found coverage for less than $100 a month with tax credits. Since then, 10.3 million uninsured adults have received health coverage and the number of uninsured adults has been reduced by 26% according to statistics released by

the Obama Administration and the Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services (CMS). On the first day of the 2014 open enrollment period, over 100,000 people submitted their coverage applications – many receiving their eligibility results that same day. For those unable to complete the process online, the ACA call center took more than 200,000 calls this weekend, with over 20,000 of these calls held in Spanish. I believe this was a great start to the second open enrollment period and exactly the type of momentum I would like to see continue through February 15th. CMS reported that in 2015, insurers will be offering 25% more plans, with some of the nation’s largest insurers offering coverage for the first time in more than a dozen states. In Texas alone, there are more than 2.6 million people who lack health insurance. With such great opportunities currently available, numbers like these are simply unacceptable.

As a representative of the 30th congressional district, I will continue to work hard to ensure a reduction in the number of uninsured Texans. Through the ACA, affordable coverage is available between now and February 15th with coverage beginning as early as January 1st if enrolled by December 15th. I encourage my constituents to make their elections early and get covered.

All 53 First Choice ER Facilities throughout Texas and Colorado to serve asToys for Tots Neighborhood Drop Sites

(Lewisville, Texas) – With the holiday season upon us, First Choice Emergency Room, an Adeptus Health company, today announced that all 53 of its facilities across Texas and Colorado will serve as Toys for Tots drop sites. First Choice Emergency Room, the nation’s leading freestanding emergency room system, will be collecting unwrapped toys for children ages 0-12 through December 17th.

“The success of the Toys for Tots organization depends on the support from local communities and we are proud to be supporting this initiative for a third year in a row, said Thomas S. Hall, President and CEO, Adeptus Health. “We’ve added 27 new facilities since the last holiday season and have even expanded into a new market, San Antonio. With more than 50 facilities we hope to triple our collection numbers.”

The U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots program is the largest outreach program in the Department of Defense and as of 2013, the Toys for Tots Program and Foundation has collected and distributed more than 469 million toys.

First Choice Emergency Room facilities will be clearly marked as Toys for Tots drop sites with large holiday inflatables. Furthermore, the facilities are open 24/7, making it even more convenient for generous shoppers to drop off their unwrapped gifts for deserving children in the community.

“We have a powerful potential in our youth, and we must have the

courage to change old ideas and practices so that we may direct their power toward good ends.” Mary McLeod Bethune This week, the National Urban League released a new survey that shows overwhelming

support from one of the most important, but rarely heard voices in the roiling and often distorted debate over Common Core State Standards – African American parents.

Our survey of 1,600 African American public school parents found that 60% of respondents have a favorable impression of the new Common Core State Standards in English language arts and math that have now been adopted by 43 states and the District of Columbia.

Sixty-eight percent of surveyed parents believe that Common Core will improve student achievement, and 66% believe it will better prepare their children for college or the workforce.  The survey also shows that a majority of parents believe what the National Urban League believes as well – that Common Core standards offer great potential for transformative educational excellence, but only if parents are pro-actively engaged, teachers are adequately trained and resources for schools and students are equitably disbursed.

Given the history and current state of unequal education in America, many African American parents are rightly concerned that their children not be short-changed by an inequitable implementation of Common Core.  A majority of respondents (58%) agree that the school their child attends lacks the resources and facilities to effectively teach Common Core State Standards, and 54% agree that teachers are not prepared to teach the standards.  Those numbers jumped to 64% and 62%, respectively, for parents

with children enrolled in predominately African American schools.  This underscores the importance of ongoing efforts to ensure that students in all schools have the resources to learn and teachers have the resources to effectively teach the Common Core.

While the National Urban League has taken a leading role in educating parents about this issue via our Put Our Children 1st: Common Core for Common Goals campaign, our survey suggests that efforts will be necessary moving forward as well to dispel the myths and deliberate distortions that have been touted by many of Common Core’s politically-motivated opponents.

Seventy-six percent of the parents surveyed understood that Common Core State Standards are a state-led effort that establishes a single set of educational standards, but 70% are under the misconception that the federal government was involved in their creation.

This demonstrates the importance of continued work to ensure the

dissemination of accurate information about the Standards.

Nothing is more important in a child’s education than parental involvement.

As I said in announcing the survey results earlier this week, “Our survey of African American parents on Common Core State Standards strongly indicates that when parents are fully informed – void of distortion, myth and political agendas, they tend to support Common Core and its potential to transform public education and help ensure that all of our children – regardless of their family income, zip code or ethnicity – are prepared for college or career.

When parents are empowered and knowledgeable about the expectations and goals of Common Core, they are able to tune out the political rhetoric – and tune in to the potential for their children.”

The Call to Action focuses on expanding community advocacy across the nation to improve educational outcomes for at-risk, urban youth.

WASHINGTON- The Delta Research and Educational Foundation (DREF), partnering with Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. (DST), is issuing a Call to Action for nonprofit organizations to increase the dialogue around teacher efficacy to improve educational outcomes through their Delta Teacher Efficacy Campaign (DTEC).

The campaign is made possible by a matching grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and is designed to enhance teacher efficacy, particularly in urban areas where disparities continue to exist for disadvantaged student subgroups. DTEC's mission is that "Teachers Believing = Students Achieving".

DREF seeks to collaborate with 40 non-profit organizations that share DREF's mindset that teacher efficacy can be enhanced to strengthen student academic achievement. The 40 organizations that are selected will conduct Town Hall Advocacy Sessions to stimulate dialogue and support teacher effectiveness through enhanced efficacy.

The partnering organizations will be selected from all regions, resulting in 40 sessions across the nation. Some cities have been targeted in the Request for Proposals (RFP), but proposers not located in those cities should also consider a submission and will be considered based upon the evaluation criteria.

The partnering organizations will serve as on-the-ground agents for DREF, logistically facilitating the Town Hall Advocacy Sessions in their communities. DREF will provide a toolkit for implementation, and training for the locally-identified facilitators.

Eligibility: The partnering organizations must be nonprofits that serve in the community and share the perspective of DREF, DST and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation for leading change in education, enhancing teacher efficacy, and increasing student achievement.

Deadline: December 19, 2014. Partners will be announced on January 23, 2015. For a copy of the Request for Proposal, visit www.deltafoundation.net, or email Dr. Johni Cruse-Craig, project director, [email protected]

The Town Hall Advocacy component represents one of the three DTEC focus areas. In addition, DREF will conduct a six-week Teacher Efficacy Academy for teachers in the 40 communities where the nonprofit partners conduct the Town Hall Advocacy Sessions. The 2016 edition of DREF's scholarly journal, PHILLIS: The Journal for Research on African American Women will focus around components of the DTEC.

8 tips to follow this holiday season

The holidays are here, which means holiday parties, food, cocktails, more food, more cocktails, and more parties. Alcohol not only contains empty calories, but it can lead to lower inhibitions and self-control around the appetizers and desserts.

Drinking too much can also lead to embarrassing conversations and situations with co-workers (or your boss!) which can cause you to regret something you said or did the next day. So, how

do you not only enjoy these parties while maintaining your professional demeanor, but maintaining your waistline as well? Justine SanFilippo, a certified health coach, nutritionist, and personal trainer, offers 8 tips to follow this holiday season:

1. Know What You are DrinkingAlcoholic beverages come in many different calorie ranges.Since they contain empty calories no matter what, we might as well drink those with the fewest amount of calories. Here are some examples of some low-calorie options:1 Glass of Red or White Wine – 120 cals1 Glass of Champagne – 77 cals1 Glass White Wine Spritzer – 90 cals

1oz Vodka or Gin with Club Soda – 64 cals12oz Light beer 55-120 cals 2. Drink waterAlcohol acts a diuretic, which causes dehydration.Becoming too dehydrated can be unhealthy and possibly even dangerous in extreme circumstances because each cell in the body craves water to function properly. To maintain your mental sharpness, reduce the calories you intake and still enjoy the festivities, be sure to drink water before you go the party, as well as after each alcoholic beverage.

3. Set a drink limit before you leavePlanning is always important when trying to reduce or maintain your waistline, from planning meals and snacks to planning workouts. The same is true for planning before you go to the party.Give yourself a guideline to enjoy a drink maximum (I would recommend a 2 drink max) and then call it a day and stick to water.

4. Drink coconut waterIf you find yourself drinking more than you had planned, or that the alcohol hits you more than you would have liked, you may find yourself with a bit of a hangover. The best solution to help you feel better sooner is to drink coconut water! Most brands contain about 6 times more potassium than a banana, which is one of the electrolytes lost when consuming alcohol.Drink some coconut water before you go to bed and when you wake up, and you’ll be feeling better in no time.

5. Eat before you go to the partyIt is veryimportant to have some food on your stomach before you go to the party. Why?When a person drinks alcohol on an empty stomach, there is no food to absorb the alcohol, so the effects are stronger.By eating before you leave, not only will you have some food on your stomach, but the appetizers and desserts at the buffet table won’t be nearly as tempting.

6. Sip, don’t chugChugging at parties may have been something that was cool in college, but in a professional setting with friends and colleagues, it’s never a good idea.Sip your favorite beverage while you network, talk to your friends and have a good time and still maintain professionalism.7. Select a designated driver or take a cabAs always, it is important to be safe during the holiday season, especially if you know you are going to go to a party and drink alcohol.Talk to your friends and select a designated driver for the evening, or split a cab (or even a car service – it’s the holidays after all!) That way you can ensure that everyone will not only have fun but be safe as well.

8. You don’t have to drinkNobody says you have to drink at a holiday party! If you are serious about maintaining or slimming your waistline during the holiday season, do what is true for you.Have a seltzer water with a twist of lemon or lime instead and nobody will know the difference!

Don't miss The Other Side of the PillowDemocrats did not invest wisely in Black candidates

By Lauren Victoria Burke

A total of $172 million. That was the record amount the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) raised in 2013 and 2014. But that money was poorly spent, which helped account for such a decisive midterm defeat.

Look at the record. On Oct. 26, the DCCC spent $242,421 on a media buy to assist conservative Democrat John Barrow get re-elected.

It didn’t work – Barrow lost. It wasn’t until four days before the election that the DCCC dropped money for Rep. Steve Horsford (D-N.V.), who was targeted by Karl Rove’s Crossroads GPS. Horsford narrowly lost and the episode provides a classic lesson in campaign spending and timing.

That’s right, in a year featuring a record number of African Americans running for Congress and statewide, not a dime was

spent on a Black candidate for Congress until the 11th hour.

If you dare look at FEC.GOV at the way millions were spent on some of the races, do it sitting down – preferably with a stiff drink in your hand.

Here are five worthy candidate who didn’t get a dime, but should have:

(La.-5) Jamie Mayo – Remember the time Rep. Vance McAllister (R-La.) was caught kissing a staffer on video and it exploded into a big scandal? Well, McAllister pulled a David Vitter and forgot to resign and is still in Congress. McAllister should have been an easy mark for Democrats. With a district that is 34 percent African American and a Senate race in Louisiana, who knows what would have happened if the Dems had invested in the race. Mayo is set to win the “jungle primary” in December and then everyone assumes he’ll lose.  But once again, the DCCC rolled the dice on other candidates who were running in red seats.  Why not invest in the mayor of Monroe, La.?

(Ga.-1) Brian Reese vs. Buddy Carter (R) — The unwritten rule for Democrats appears to be: All money spent on anyone running for Congress in Georgia must go to John Barrow. Even though Barrow was helped by Democrats to the tune of $2.3 million, he lost. In a year where there is a governor’s race, a Senate race, five Black

women on the ballot and big fat spending by DSCC on Black turnout, one would think Democrats might catch a clue that 2014 may have been be a good time to fund a Black congressional candidate in Georgia. You know, Georgia, right? It is a state that’s 30 percent Black, the third most Blacks in the U.S.  That Georgia.  Georgia’s 1st district was open for the first time in 22 years.

(Minn.-3) Sharon Sund vs. Erik Paulsen (R) – This is the case of a “lean Dem” seat that Democrats haven’t bothered to compete in. This seat went 51 percent to 47 percent for Obama in 2008 and 49 percent to 48 percent for Obama in 2012. You understand there is always some reason not to try to win a seat with an incumbent R sitting there — unless there isn’t.  Sund is a progressive candidate in a progressive leaning district.  But watch carefully: DCCC went after incumbent Republican Lee Terry in what is a red seat.  Perhaps the gamble will pay off but why not go hard after seats that lean blue?

(Fla.-16) Henry Lawrence vs. Vern Buchanan (R) – Arkansas-2 went 54 percent to 42 percent for Romney in 2012. Florida-16 went 54 percent to 44 percent for Romney in 2012. Which seat are the Democrats spending millions on? That would be the Arkansas seat and not the Florida one.

Henry Lawrence is a former NFL player who played for the Oakland Raiders in the 1970s.

Lawrence played in Super Bowl XI, Super Bowl XV and Super Bowl XVIII, giving him  three Super Bowl rings.  Come on Democrats you couldn’t market that?  Soon-to-be former Republican Congressman Jon Runyun has no rings and he was in Congress for four years.  Lawrence’s opponent was do-nothing fatcat Vern Buchanan.  While Democrats knocked themselves out to elect Gwen Graham in Florida’s 2nd district, there wasn’t a dime for NFL star Henry Lawrence.

(SC-7) Gloria Tinubu vs Tom Rice (R) – One of the mysteries of the Democratic Party’s strategy is why did they give up on seats with large Black populations in an era of mega-voter registration and GOTV efforts. South Carolina’s 7th district is 30 percent Black. Nick Rahall sits in a seat that went 65 percent to 32 percent for Romney and next thing you know millions are spent to save him.  It’s just interesting that Tinubu is on her own against a relatively new Republican with not much to say for himself in a 30 percent Black seat and that doesn’t spur a challenge.

And Democrats are mystified by how they lost?Lauren Victoria Burke is !eelance writer and creator of the blog Crewof42.com, which covers African American members of Congress. Burke appears regularly on “NewsOneNow with Roland Martin” and on WHUR FM, 900 AM WURD. She worked previously at USA Today and ABC News.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congressional Homelessness Caucus Co-Chairs Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-TX) and Alcee L. Hastings (D-FL) made the following statement highlighting National Hunger & Homelessness Awareness Week, which is held the week before Thanksgiving.

“Homelessness is a multifaceted issue that can affect individuals and families of all backgrounds,” said Congresswoman Johnson. “It is an issue that transcends all Congressional districts or political boundaries, and can severely impact the lives of individuals and families indefinitely. In addition to the difficulties homeless individuals face

on a daily basis, homelessness has also put tremendous financial pressure on municipalities all across the United States, as the state provides police and medical assistance to individuals left to fend for themselves on the streets. While steps taken by the Federal Strategic Plan have been extremely positive, there is more that Congress can do.”

“This Thanksgiving as many of us prepare to spend the holiday with family let us not forget the millions homeless individuals and families that will go hungry with no home to call their own,” said Congressman Hastings. “Each year, we set aside the week before the Thanksgiving to mark National Hunger

and Homelessness Awareness Week. Though progress has been made in reducing hunger and homelessness, we must remain diligent to ensure that every American has access to the most basic human needs. The issue of homelessness is exacerbated by the high rate home foreclosure and socio-economic difficulties faced by many of our working poor. I will continue to work to bring renewed attention to the ending hunger and homelessness in America, through outreach, advocacy and creation of public policy to protect this venerable population. Collectively, the Congressional Homeless Caucus will continue to make progress in ensuring

that all Americans have food to eat and permanent shelter over their heads.”

National Hunger & Homelessness Awareness Week is held each year the week before Thanksgiving. This is a time for us all to start to think about what we are thankful for, and a perfect time to share our compassion with our neighbors who are experiencing homelessness. This year, National Hunger & Homelessness Awareness Week is held from November 15-23, 2014. For more information, please visit: http://nationalhomeless.org/about-us/projects/awareness-week/.

{SILVER SPRING, MD – Dallas’ KSOUL marks the third history-making format change for Radio One in the last month. On Saturday at midnight, the previous Urban AC station shocked the airwaves with “Baby Got Back” by Sir-Mix-A-Lot and BOOM 94.5 FM was born. After months of planning, the station is launching with 94-hours of non-stop Classic Hip-Hop for the Dallas market that research supports has an appetite for this genre of music.

The new BOOM is a complement to Radio One’s 97.9 THE BEAT FM, a Rhythmic CHR station. “We expect the cluster combination of the new BOOM and THE BEAT to be a winning one,” said Gary Spurgeon, Vice President and General Manager, Radio One Dallas. Spurgeon proudly quotes the stations new positioning, “BOOM 94.5 and 97.9 THE BEAT, Where Hip-Hop Lives in DFW.”

The new BOOM 94.5 FM promises to play the music many Generation X’ers grew up listening to like Dr.

Dre, Tupac, P Diddy, LL Cool J, Jay-Z, Queen Latifah, Geto Boys and many more.

The expansion of the BOOM brand comes on the cusp of Radio One successfully launching BOOM 92 FM in Houston, TX in October and BOOM 107.9 FM in Philadelphia almost two weeks ago. Though KSOC’s rating performance was recently seeing improvement, after its declining performance and research, the plan to

transition to Classic Hip-Hop was underway. Houston’s BOOM 92 FM’s early performance has shown significant rating impact in its first few weeks. The impact in Philadelphia is too early to ascertain, but its digital and social media buzz has been tremendous.

Although this transition is exciting and seemingly the appropriate strategy for the market, the KSOUL flip has impacted two

employees and the iconic “Fly Jock”, Tom Joyner of the Tom Joyner Morning Show (TJMS) that has long inspired, entertained and informed the Dallas community. “Transitioning employees is always difficult,” said Spurgeon. “We’ve taken every step to ensure our employees are treated fairly and with respect. As for Tom, he’s an icon and consummate professional that understands our format change and looks forward to partying with his Dallas listeners on his digital platforms.”The Tom Joyner Morning show can still be heard in Dallas every morning from 5am – 9am, by streaming online around the clock on BlackAmericaWeb.com. Listeners can also download the Tom Joyner Morning Show app to stream live at http://bit.ly/TJMSApp

This time of year, it's easy for people to become pre-occupied with their own holiday celebrations. But one small start-up Texas toy company is celebrating the Christmas season early by giving away every other toy it makes to sick, abused, homeless or neglected children who've had more than their share of challenges so early in their young lives.

Between now and December 24, Stickman Stew LLC, the Rockport, Texas maker of a line of iconic plush stick figures called STICKMAN STEW® and THE GOLD HEART CREW,™ will donate one toy for every toy purchased online to kid-friendly non-profits throughout Texas.

In Dallas, non-profit Children's Cancer Fund received the toys on behalf of kids with cancer and Children at Risk, a research and public policy group that advocates for children. Toys are now being sent to Vogel Alcove, which has provided quality child development services for Dallas’ youngest victims of poverty: homeless children 6 weeks to 5-years old. Other Texas non-profits receiving toys are Houston Children's Charity and Neighborhood Centers, Inc. in Houston; St. PJ's Children's Home in San Antonio; CASA of Travis County in Austin, and The Salvation Army in Amarillo.

"Brightening the lives of children is what the holiday season is all about," said Jane Guinn, founder of the plush-toy company and creator of Stickman Stew. "We decided the best way to celebrate the upcoming holiday season was to 'pay it forward' and give away toys to kids who could use a little sunshine."

Both organizations said they are extremely grateful for the toy donations. "We love the toys," said Camille Cain, Children's Cancer Fund's development director. "They smile at you and are so

happy. We're excited for the kids to get them."

Kid-friendly non-profits throughout the state interested in receiving free toys can contact Stickman Stew by visitinghttp://stickmanstew.com/non-profits/. For social media aficionados, Stickman Stew is promoting the toy giveaway with the hashtag #SpiritOfChristmas.

STICKMAN STEW toys are based on the iconic stick-like figures cavemen drew

on their caves 20,000 years ago and kids still draw today. "Parents like our toys because they don't require batteries,"said Guinn. "They're powered by a kid's imagination.” Each toy has a fun name: Stickman Stew, Stickgal Sal, Stickid Sid and Stickgirl Shirl. They each have a golden heart, the one thing we all share. Each toy costs under $10. STICKMAN STEW recently won the Parent Tested Parent Approved (PTPA) Seal of Approval, from America's largest volunteer testing company.

Age Well, PleaseAs someone who has come to

Christ as a mature adult, I’m challenged from time to time as ministers and bible study leaders and others of faith talk about the process of becoming a mature Christian.

The challenge is in knowing what it means to mature as a person and applying some of those same principles to the maturation process as they relate to faith and knowledge. Faith as a concept is pretty easy to understand.

The knowledge I’m speaking about accompanies the experience of knowing God’s word. As such, just like a mature adult, your behavior starts to be dictated by your experience, your knowledge. In other words your decisions are affected and guided by what you know.

For the mature Christian, your faith is easily expressed in words. However, your deeds, your actions now have parameters set in stone due to the experience of faith. So the more you know about God’s word and God’s will, the more

responsive you become in what you do, don’t do, say, don’t say etc.

Forgiveness for instance is an example of what I’m talking about.

The more you accept the truth of Christ in your life, the more mandatory it becomes to forgive those who have in some way ‘trespassed’ against you.

You see a mature Christian knows if you don’t forgive your enemies, God will not forgive you. How dare you not at least

undertake the notion of forgiveness when Jesus paid the ultimate sacrifice so we all could be forgiven! Some people refer to this as knowing that you know that you know.

It is a process however and it does take time. Maturity requires action and it is this action that I’m saying challenges me more often than not. It is not always easy to do the right thing. But for the mature Christian, it is purely a matter of knowledge that easily lets you know what the right thing is. It’s what you’re supposed to do in all situations and circumstances.

The more mature you become in your faith, the more evident it becomes in your behavior. However, I think you pass the real test when your maturity readily surfaces in what you think.

The thought process of the mature Christian is where I find myself these days. I guess you can say I am now a proponent of ‘you are what you think.’ I believe faith does move mountains. And as I start to move mine, I’ll be living proof of what they say about mustard seeds.

Believe me, I’m working on it. May God bless and keep you

always.

DCHHS offers Free Flu Vaccine  – Dallas County Health and Human Services (DCHHS) is offering the seasonal flu vaccine for children and adults at no cost. The flu vaccine is free for all uninsured and low income Dallas County residents. “In comparison to last year, we’re seeing similar percentages of individuals positive for flu, but more people are being tested this year,” said Zachary Thompson, DCHHS director. “This same time last year more than 330 tests were performed and we are currently at around 800 tests, with 113 positive for either type A or B flu.” There were 3 pediatric and 55 adult flu-related deaths in Dallas County during the 2013-14 flu season. This year, there have not been any flu-related deaths. DCHHS Medical Director/Health Authority Dr. Christopher Perkins encourages everyone to get the flu vaccine once a year. “It is ideal to get a flu shot before the virus begins circulating in the community,” Dr. Perkins said. “However, if you haven’t received it, you still have time to get protected.” Individuals should also practice proper hand washing and other flu prevention methods, Dr. Perkins added. Flu materials are posted on the DCHHS website. The flu vaccine DCHHS provides is an all-in-one shot that protects against multiple flu strains including the H1N1 virus.  The adult vaccine is given in the adult immunization clinic on the first floor at the DCHHS building located at 2377 N. Stemmons Frwy. in Dallas. The children’s vaccine is available at all DCHHS immunization clinics. Clinic hours are from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Appointments aren’t necessary. For more information call 214-819-2162.

Are you planning to travel this holiday season? Here are a few tips to keep you healthy during the busiest travel season of the year:1. Talk to your doctor.  If you have a chronic condition, make sure you are cleared for air travel, are up-to-date on vaccinations, and have enough prescription medication to last the duration of the time you will be away from home.

2. Avoid touching surfaces, and then touching your face. If you are flying, consider wiping down your entire area, including the tray table and arm rests, with an antibacterial wipe or hand sanitizer. Germs are often spread when a person touches something that is contaminated with germs and then touches his or her eyes, nose, or mouth.

3. Use good hand hygiene. Washing your hands often will help protect you from germs. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub.

4. Practice other good health habits. Get plenty of sleep, be physically active, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutritious food.

Dallas City Councilman Dwaine Caraway, in conjunction with Radio One-Dallas, will host "Baskets of Hope"  providing over 1500 free turkeys to Dallas families for the Thanksgiving holiday.  Mr. Caraway holds the event annually to provide free turkeys to senior citizens and needy families in the community who would otherwise not have a turkey on the table for their Thanksgiving meal.  The event will be held on this Saturday, November 22nd at 10am inside Big T Bazaar in Oak Cliff.

Local grocer, Kroger, has partnered in previous years with Councilman Caraway in securing the turkeys for the giveaway.  This year Kroger sent a letter to Councilman Caraway's office stating that they would not be supporting the turkey giveaway due to his initiative to have local grocers move away from using plastic bags.

"I was really shocked and disheartened at the actions of Kroger," says Councilman Caraway.  "Kroger has been the lead opponent

against the plastic bag initiative.  Its shocking to learn that Kroger would take this stance.  Its disheartening to know that Kroger's community initiatives are ceased because of a battle at City Hall.  Kroger is not pulling out on Dwaine Caraway with this move.  Kroger is pulling out on the Southern Dallas community.  Walmart, 7-Eleven and businesses have stepped up and this year we have even more turkeys than before."

"Everyone will receive their turkey in a Walmart reuseable bag that they will have to continue using when the new Dallas ordinance goes into effect on January 1 eliminating plastic bags in our City," continues Councilman Caraway.

Sponsors for this year's "Basket of Hope" include: Concessions International, Walmart, 7-Eleven, Clear Channel Outdoor, Radio One-Dallas, City of Dallas, The Woodlief Family, Associa and The Corona Family, Susan Hawk for DA, Balcones Resources and others.

Southern Dallas residents are encouraged participate.  To redeem your free turkey, you must register online at www.ksoul945.com or www.thebeatdfw.com. ;You will need to provide your name, address, phone number and email address to register. You will be contacted (via phone or email) to confirm that a turkey has been reserved for you. If you have questions regarding registration, please call (972) 331-5400.   There is a limited supply of turkeys.  One turkey per household.

Dear Alma,

My frat brother is getting married. We graduated over 15 years ago and so much has happened since then. We’re all successful and living the lives we dreamed of.

This is his second marriage and we’re all very happy for him. Many of us stay in touch and recently out of that constant connection, his ex-college girlfriend and I have become more than just friends.

We haven’t told anyone yet. I’ve never been married and she’s soon to be divorced.

We thought maybe we could go to his wedding together and that way everyone would find out at the same time. Since we can’t ask any of our friends, I thought it would be a good idea to ask what do you think?

DeAngelo M.Arlington, Va.

Hi D,

I appreciate you taking the time to email me. Blessings to your frat brother on his upcoming nuptials and

I hope you guys have a blast celebrating.

Now that I’ve salsa danced through the niceties, brace yourself, here comes the twirl – No, I don’t think

you two should show up to show out. You know as well as I do, there’s a place and time for everything. This ain’t the place.

I know yawl excited about being each other’s new Boo, but this moment belongs to them, him and his new bride.

The two of you would be the rumor at the reception and ain’t nobody got time for that, LOL. Hold out a little while longer and attend separately.

If your relationship continues to proceed on a positive note, you two will be able to post some pictures on Facebook, after the wedding, like everyone else, LOL. Pause for the cause, and prayerfully what goes around will come around.

The fact that you two elect to exercise some patience, hopefully will produce a gleeful groomsman and ex-boyfriend, who’ll be happy for you both.

Political analysts, both mainstream and Black news

media and intellectuals around the country have given their

grade evaluation on President Barack Obama’s first 100

days in office, marked on April 30. Here’s how several

people from the local front graded the new president.

Congresswoman EddieBernice Johnson

Grade:A“I am deeply impressed with the progress that

President Barack Obama has made during the first 100days of his administration. Already we are seeingevidence of the administration’s plan to dig our countryout of recession and develop long-term, sustainable pros-perity. President Obama has made two trips abroad, proving to us and to the world that he intends to

repair our frayed alliances and restore ourinternational leadership.

Finally, the Obama adminis-tration’s code of ethicshas broughtmuch-neededtransparency andaccountability to theWhite House.

President Obamais delivering on thechange that hepromised.”

Senator Kay

Bailey HutchisonGrade: C

“In just 100 days, we’ve seen an alarming accel-

eration of policies that will take America down the

wrong track. The administration has proposed

trillions of dollars in new spending, which will

result in higher taxes on Americans, while sharply

raising our indebtedness to foreign creditors. On the national security front, I am

very concerned aboutthe President’s intention toclose Guantanamo without aworkable plan to relocatedetainees. It is mysincere hope that, movingforward,

theadminis-

tration willadopt the productive,

responsible approach to ournation’s challenges thatAmericansdeserve.”(The office of John Cornyn of

PROPOSITIONS

1 AND 2

Dallas is abuzz at theelection issues beforethem on May 9 whencitizens are asked tovote on the controver-sial ConventionCenter Hotel that isbeing backed byMayor

Leppert. But what doesvoting “no” and voting“yes” mean?It is important to

remember that thepropositions are toamend the Dallas CityCharter which, amongother things, gives thecity the power to acquireproperty for any publicpurpose. The propositionsare worded to prohibit thecity from acting on thesebefore stated powers. Therefore, if a citizen wouldlike the city to maintainthose powers, they are tovote NO and vice versa.
