Approaches to innovation
CSP–INNOVAZIONE NELLE ICT mission:
Applying scientific and technological
research to develop local innovation
potential, in businesses and in Pas
Joining technological skills and
creative capacities in order to create
value, for clients and territory
9
1) TECHNOLOGY LABS * based on agreements and cooperation with local
Universities
* working on
•scenario studies
•technological foresight
•design validation & test of services
•development of demo and prototypes

2) “TERRITORI DIGITALI” (~ LIVING LAB) •innovation and experimentation through trial
projects in defined areas, involving final users in a
trial panels
•born in particular within Wi-Pie* program as
“progetti dimostratori”
•more than technological trial, complex activity set
to support transition to digital and interactive
services (dissemination, promotion, “evangelization”,
training, push to networking and cooperation of
different players, push to use e-services, push to
produce UGC and promote local culture, …)
Trial areas
Valli Orco e Soana
BorgoLab – DigitalVillage
Novara
Approaches to innovation…
* Wi-Pie: Regional
permanent Program to
provide broadband
connectivity all over
the territory by 2008
11
Vos Project
11 small municipalities
616.06 km2
8,300 inhabitants (population density: 13.5 inh/km2)
about 15,000 tourists every year
The trial area has been selected in order to maximize
the transferability model into other regional areas,
even if they have different size.
Alpine area - North West of Piedmont (Province of
Turin) – North West of Italy
12
NETWORK: Architecture (1)
The pilot project specific objective is to
cover the entire area with a pervasive
broadband wireless network available to
local Public Authorities, schools,
businesses, citizens with ADSL-like
connection speed: at least 2Mbps downstream
and 512kbps upstream.
The network exploits the convergence of
existing assets (dark fiber as well as TV-
radio trellises), owned by different local
organisations, together with wireless
technologies (HiperLAN, Wi-Fi, DVB-T and
DVB-H), for the delivery of broadband
services.
Vos Project
13
SERVICES
The network is used to deliver traditional internet services (www, e-mail, news, e-commerce...) together with innovative services such as:
VoIP;
hot-spot Wi-Fi;
environment monitoring of dams, rivers, landslides;
seismic monitoring;
weather monitoring;
high quality webcam streaming for tourist purposes;
digital television and digital radio broadcasting on IP and DVB-T/H
Vos Project
14
CONTENTS
To stimulate the active participation of the local
community, an integrated multi-channel platform has been developed:
www.orcosoana.tv The platform collects “local” contents in UGC and web 2.0 approach.
First phase:
programs and formats are determined by the Mountain
Community that supplies basic available contents.
Second phase:
CSP produces at least one pilot episode for each format
and organizes training courses.
Third phase:
contents are directly produced by a local editorial
staff.

15
Approaches to innovation…
3) Pervasive ICT: Make ICT pervasive, by integrating technologies in
easy-to-use objects, user-centric designed
EXAMPLE OF APPLICATION AREAS:
Mobility: VICSUM project (vehicle-to-vehicle
communication)
Cognitive Systems for disabled people: ATLAS project
(cognitive devices for deaf persons)
Immersive interfaces: running research on multitouch
display
Social media for organizing work environments in
cooperative sense
ICT for Creative Industry: CREATE
In several regional Innovation Poles (Mechatronics,
Multimedia and Creativity, Sustainable Architecture, Food
and Agriculture, …)
16
Approaches to innovation…
3) Pervasive ICT approach make ICT pervasive by integrating technologies in
easy-to-use objects, user-centric designed in
support to focal topics of Regione Piemonte:
Transition from analogical to digital TV
Multimedia service based in UGC(VOS)
Application for interactive TV (MHP)
A new integrated TV channel for digital contents
(PIUPIEMONTE), a ongoing bid devoted to several
contents (sports, energy, innovation)
17
3)
Approaches to innovation…
A new approach to TT:
technology assets developed by CSP are offered
free of charge to enterprises for transforming
prototypes and demo in new products and services
ready to market
•7 domains (digital terrestrial TV, embedded
systems, security and trusted content, image
processing, network and signal monitoring,
collaborative working, wireless networks)
•21 assets (catalogue 2008-2009)
•4/5 new assets per year
