From the Pastor’s Desk Dear Friends,
Autumn is in full swing and the colors are just around the corner. I am anticipating
the changes and can hardly wait! I really do think, because of all the colors and
beauty, that Fall is my favorite time of the year. Not to mention that the end of
Fall is Christmas! Wow! Did I have to mention that?
One of the truths that comes barging into this beautiful picture is that another year is quickly
passing. Do the years seem to be accelerating in speed to you or is it just me? Wasn’t it Easter
Sunday just a few weeks ago? Seems like it. But then again, every Sunday is Easter Sunday for
the Christian. Yes, our lives, moving as fast as they are, rest securely in the truth that Jesus Christ
is our risen Savior and Lord.
I hope you noticed the construction progress in front of the Family Life Center. If you go around
behind the FLC you will notice things are changing back there, as well. We know we must all be
flexible during this construction but we hope to maintain all of our activities in the FLC and even
special events like Walk to Emmaus and the Christmas Bazaar without major interruptions. If you
haven’t had a chance to make a commitment to Connecting to the Future it is not too late. We
still need you. Pray about it. Is God prompting you to get on board?
Let me also encourage you to consider being part of the I Was Broke Now I’m Not Financial
classes on Wednesday evenings. It’s not too late to get into the class. The class meets as part of
the WD2 activities using a video teaching time and then group discussion and helping each other
take new steps of financial accountability. It is NOT a high pressure group and you don’t have to
reveal all your dark financial secrets. IWBNIN is all about learning better financial techniques and
challenging one another to make progress. Come be part of the team.
Lastly, October 6, is World Communion Sunday. That afternoon there will be a CROP Walk,
sponsored by Church World Service, to raise awareness and funds to stop hunger around the
world and in our community. The Walk begins at the Cumberland Presbyterian Church at 2:00
PM. To support those efforts, our communion offering on October 6, will go towards the CROP
Walk. 25% of all funds return to our community and are designated to assist HOTEL, INC. Let’s
all do a little something extra as we fight hunger around the world.
Once again, we are looking at a beautiful and full month of great activities. I look forward to be-
ing in ministry with you.
Looking ahead: Bishop Lindsey Davis will be with us on December 8, to help celebrate our 50 th!
Your friend,

A Word from Josh You get about a hundred years of life, give or take, and you only
get the time of your life to do what God had in mind when he
designed you. He has given you life and He made you like Him-
self. He does not fail and does not want you to fail. He has given
you a dominion and He has built you intending you to accom-
plish His will within in that dominion. In short, He has built you
to win. That was the first part of the phrase, “A hundred years…”
And while that is good it gets better. Not only has He given you
your life span, you also get a risen savior. You get the ultimate
winner. You get the defeater of death. You get the way the truth
and the LIFE.
You have been given life for a reason and you have been built
with a mission. Take the time you’ve been given, take the life
you’ve been entrusted with and win. You have everything you
need to win in the risen Savior. His power created you, his power
sustains you. And just like His biggest win was his obedience to
God’s will (defeating death by dying) so too your greatest win
will be acts of obedience.
So, you get one hundred years and God wants you to win at life
in those hundred years but you don’t walk alone and you are
never powerless. You have been given a risen savior, someone
who has already won the greatest battle. Live in His victory and
hit your hundred years with everything you’ve got, because it is
going to take everything you’ve got. It is going to take all your
life to win at life. It’s as though God is saying, “I have given you
one life for my glory, and I have given you everything you need
to glorify Me, so go win!
Love you guys,
Josh

Hello Family,
For several weeks now, maybe longer I have had
a phrase coming to me over and over. When I am
trying to fall asleep or when I am just waking up,
or in a moment of clarity this phrase has been
drifting in and out of mind. At first I ignored it
and so I forgot it. Then when it came back to me
the next time it seemed vaguely familiar but I couldn’t peg it so I
dismissed it. It kept coming to me in my dreams or just as I was
waking up, right there on the edge of conscience, this two part
thought and I couldn’t quite grasp it. I would wake up thinking
the three words “A hundred years…” knowing that there was
more to the thought but not able to remember the rest. It felt like
the phrase was haunting me. Of course when you try to
remember a thought so delicate as a whim or an inspiration you
can’t get it, you can’t force it. Finally in a moment of silence the
thought surfaced again and it was clear, “A hundred years and a
risen Savior”. Okay great, “A hundred years and a risen Savior”
got it, but what in the world does that mean?!
I very much enjoy hiking but when you have two kids and about
as much free time as the president of the United States (mild
exaggeration) you settle for walking around your neighborhood.
Walking for me is a very spiritual time. It allows me to get away
from my world and gives me time to think and listen. A couple
days ago I was out getting some exercise on my own and this
recurring thought came back to me. I knew it was important but
it was also so very confusing so I asked God to help me make
sense of it.
As I walked if felt like He impressed on me one primary idea,
one word really and here it is- ready? Win. That’s it. Win. Let
me see if I can unpack some of what it felt like God wanted me
to process that day. I hope that it is an encouragement to you as
much as it has been to me.
Church Council Corner
The Church Council meets the third Monday of each
month. The Church Council met September 16 at
7:00pm.
Josh reported that the youth group and Young Adult
groups were doing well. He thanked Chase Stewart
for his dedication each Saturday in helping prepare
the FLC for worship on Sunday. Josh said that the
praise band is currently looking for new members.
Matt Moore reported for the Finance Committee that
we have had several expensive charges in the last
month; however the building fund is up substantially
this month. Independence Bank will be financing our
loan for the building expansion and had a nice
proposal for moving our other accounts to their bank.
The Finance Committee authorized the move. Matt
also announced that budgets are due in October.
Patty reported that ROCK and Wednesday nights are
going great. She is grateful for help from Juanita Cox
due to the large number of kids attending on
Wednesdays. A Christmas play for the kids will be
picked soon and rehearsals will start shortly after.
Stephen Harmon reported that the SPRC will be
conducting Pastor David’s evaluation this month.
The Trustees announced a switch in insurance to
Howard Insurance which will save the church a
substantial amount of money. Construction on the
FLC expansion began Monday, September 16.
Pastor David reported that we would be doing the
Miracle Offering again this Christmas season. We are
set to host the Women’s Emmaus walk in October.
There will be a CAT meeting on October 14 to
discuss evaluations and goals. The church has joined
Right Now Media which allows us to have over 2,000
video Bible studies in our online library.

The Children’s Christmas Play this year will be
held on Sunday evening, December 8th. Please
mark the date on your calendars for what is always a
wonderful evening. Further details will be
forthcoming in the next few weeks.
Nursery Request: We are asking parents whose
children are in the nursery during Sunday School
and then the contemporary worship service to stop
by the nursery after Sunday School and walk into
the FLC with your child for the contemporary
service. The nursery children will then be asked to
come forward for the children’s blessing with the
children who will be going to ROCK. Thank you.
Right Now Media: If you have not yet responded
to the church’s invitation to access the video library
at Right Now Media, I would encourage you to do
so. There are over 50 titles in the “Children”
content area and they include some family favorites
such as Hermie and Friends, Adventures in
Odyssey, Sheila Walsh’s Gigi series and The Last
Chance Detectives. Other titles are being added as
they become available.
A special thank you goes out to Richea Norden
who has begun working with Angie Gordon and our
younger children during the Wednesday night
programs.
The Advent Workshop for our children will be
held this year on Friday, November 22.

Children’s Ministry
Christ Church is always looking for ways to serve you
as you live out your faith throughout the week. We
want to invite you to a video library called RightNow
Media. Watch a quick video about it at
www.rightnowmedia.org/launch. It's essentially the
"Netflix of Video Bible Studies" because you will have
instant access to thousands of great videos for kids,
youth, parents, married couples and more. You can
view these videos from your phone, tablet or computer
or through a TV or projector. There are over 2500
videos from some great teachers.
You should have already received an official
"invitation email" to give you FREE access to this
library. You might need to check your mail filter to
accept the invite. Because it was coming from Right-
Now's system it may have got caught there.
Pastor David already sent invitations to give free
access. Simply find the email, click on the link and put
in your name and a password and you're all set. All of
the videos are FREE. If you haven't received the email
from RightNow with your invitation, simply email
Pastor David at [email protected]. He will resend the
invitation.

“Ministering to Everyone with Action, Love, and Support” Saturday Meals Program
“For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me…” -Matthew 25:35
On Saturday, September 7th CUMC was responsible for
providing the manpower for M.E.A.L.S., Inc. We had 36
volunteers from our congregation who cooked, packed,
and delivered a hot meal and other food products to 238
recipients. It was a wonderful time of fellowship and
service for our church family volunteers. Our next
opportunity to serve through this much-needed ministry is
Saturday, December 7th. Please consider joining with us
then as we feed our neighbors who have very little or NO
food. If you have any questions or need additional
information about this ministry, please call Helen Terry at
745-0943 or 991-9075.
2013 CUMC M.E.A.L.S., Inc. Dates December 7
“CORN FOR CHRISTMAS” “During the Christmas holidays, one of the things that
most families look forward to is to gather as a family and
share Christmas dinner together. It is a joyous, happy time
for our families to be together and share a wonderful
meal.
Unfortunately, many of our neighbors here in Bowling
Green do not have the resources to prepare the traditional
Christmas dinner. For the past 2 years, M.E.A.L.S, Inc.
has delivered a Christmas Dinner Box to each family who
is a recipient of food from M.E.A.L.S., Inc. This box con-
tains either a turkey or a ham and approximately 12-14
items. These boxes allow these families to prepare and
share a traditional Christmas meal just like everyone else.
This year, the M.E.A.L.S, Inc. organization has asked if
any of the participating churches would be willing to
sponsor one of the items that go in the boxes. CUMC has
volunteered to provide 250 cans of corn as our contribu-
tion to this project, and we are asking each of you to help
us meet this goal. (You can buy a can of corn at Kroger
for $0.69 or at Aldi‘s or Wal-Mart for $0.29-$0.59.) This
may seem like a small amount to us, but you just have no
idea what a can of corn means to those who literally have
NO food. Any donations of corn above the 250 cans will
be given to H.O.T.E.L., Inc on behalf of CUMC to help
stock their shelves for the Christmas season.
You can donate individually and/or collect in your Sun-
day School class or other groups, or if you want to donate
$1, we will be happy to take all contributions and pur-
chase the corn for you. A “CORN FOR CHRISTMAS”
Box will be located in the entryway to the Sanctuary and
also the entryway to the Family Life Center. If you have
any questions, please call Helen Terry at 745-0943 or 991
-9075. Let’s say “Merry Christmas” with corn!
Helping Others Through Extended Love In the Name of Christ
Thank you for your response to last month’s First
Sunday collection. We collected 68 boxes of mac and
cheese; just a little short of our goal of 100 boxes. It
seems church members are constantly being asked to
give; money, time, food. In Luke 3:11 – “And he
answered them, “Whoever has two tunics is to share
with him who has none, and whoever has food is to do
likewise.” Each week, the bulletin lists a most needed
item, but this is just a suggestion. Each Sunday when
you’re making that morning cup of tea or coffee, take
out a can of food, any can and bring it along to
church. Make it a habit. Do it every week. Let’s fill
our collection bins every week in each service to over-
flowing blessing both the giver and receiver.
October's First Sunday Most Needed Item –
Spaghetti Sauce and/or Dry Pasta
GOAL = 100 Items

preparing UMCOR kits for use at home and
abroad. The closest UMCOR distribution site is Sager-
Brown in Baldwin, LA. Come join us as we learn
more about this facility and what happens when we
send our kits for processing. Then we’ll get to work
assembling and packing our Birthing Kits for ship-
ment. Having worked up an appetite, we’ll enjoy fel-
lowship around the table. We hope to see you there.

Prayer Shawl Ministry
Thanks to the Prayer Shawl Ministry:
You may know about the Prayer Shawl ministry of
our church or you may not. My family and I have
been the recipient of 3 of these shawls and they are
very special to me.
First, I have the shawl that was made for my Mother
when my Father passed away. It was made by a dear
friend and with much love and prayer.
The second was given to my husband when he fell
and broke a knee cap picking a flower for me.
Again, the prayer and special thought was very spe-
cial.
The last one was for me when my sister went to her
heavenly home. It was such a comfort to be
wrapped in love and prayer at that time. The prayer
shawl ministry at our church is a special gift to our
congregation and is appreciated by all who receive its
blessing.

Birthdays Trustees Updates and Requests
The Trustees are considering removal of the concrete picnic
table in the prayer garden. If anyone knows the origin of the
table or has any questions, please contact Carolyn Marks, 270-
843-1328.
Response should be made by November 1, 2013.
The red chairs used in the FLC and other locations in the
building have become dirty and some have mildewed. Do you
have upholstery cleaning equipment that might help with this
project? The Trustees are looking for 5 machines and 13
people to clean the chairs, take them outside to dry, and return
the chairs to the FLC. If you have equipment and/or would
simply be willing to help, contact Carolyn Marks at 843-1328
(home) or 799-4693 (cell). We need several people helping so
pray and consider this opportunity to serve.
Please consider being part of the I Was
