WHAT’S NEW IN SOCIAL STUDIES

“If you don't

know history,

then you don't

know anything.

You are a leaf

that doesn't know

it is part of a

tree.‖

~Michael Crichton

Students in GT World History are engaged in preparing projects for National History

Day. This year’s theme is Leadership and Legacy in History. This theme asks students to

consider what it means to lead an event (as opposed to just being present) and what it

means to leave a legacy behind. Students need to examine the qualities of leaders and to

explore their legacies. Some sample topics for this year are:

Charlemagne’s Conquest and its Impact on European Architecture

The WHO: Leading the Fight to Eradicate Communicable Disease

Globalization of McDonalds: American Corporations Leading the World’s Economy

Tomas Paine’s Revolutionary Writings

Pancho Villa: Leading Northern Mexico

Emiliano Zepata: Leadership for Reforma, Libertad Lely y Justicia‖

Emmeline Pankhurst: Leading a Militant Struggle for Suffrage in Great Britain

Charles V and the Peace of Augsburg: Leading to a New Map of Europe

Confucianism: Leading the Way to a Chinese Civil Service

Ravi Shankar: Blending Eastern and Western Music

What is National History Day?

In case you are not familiar with National History Day, here is some background infor-

mation. According the website, ―National History Day is an innovative curriculum frame-

work in which students learn history by selecting topics of interest and conducting a long

term research project. Students practice critical inquiry and ask questions of significance,

time, and place.‖

Students choose a topic in the fall that is related to the theme. They conduct primary and

secondary research. After analyzing and interpreting their sources and drawing conclu-

sions about their topic’s significance, students prepare their project for presentation at the

local, state, and national levels. Students may choose an original paper, exhibits, perform-

ances, websites, and documentaries. Presentations and projects are evaluated by profes-

sional historians and educators.

In the past THS students have placed first in local and state competitions. Our teams have

won in the categories of website and documentaries. We are hoping that this year is no

different. Perhaps we will haves someone win at the national level! The national competi-

tion is held in June at the University of Maryland at College Park.

If you are interested in reading more about this year’s theme or about National History

Day, the website is www.nhd.org.

STANGE’S HAIR??

Members of the 3A North Regional Champion Girls Cross Country team administer the tradi-

tional post-race haircut to Coach Stange!

Mr. Stange’s new look!!

Last Thursday, October 30th at Tollgate

Park in Bel Air, the Girls and Boys Cross

Country teams swept the 3A North Re-

gional Championships for the second con-

secutive year. A cross country tradition of

giving the coaches a haircut after a cham-

pionship was revived in 2013. This year

the girls team administered the post-race

shave. Both teams qualified for the 3A State Championships that will be held tomor-

row, November 8, at Hereford High School: the girls race at 10:30 a.m., followed by

Theater Poster Design Blitz

The Theater Boosters sponsored the first ever ―Theater Poster Design Blitz.‖ Visual arts stu-

dents attended the October 29th rehearsal of You Can't Take it With You. Cast members

briefed them on the play, and while the cast rehearsed, the visual artists designed posters for

the play. The Theater Boosters provided pizza and snacks for the visual and performing art-

ists. Six artists submitted posters. Theater faculty and Boosters will select one or two posters

to be printed.

The Poster Design Blitz would not have been possible without the enthusiastic support of

Cheryl Milligan and the Art faculty. Ms. Milligan, Mr. Belt, and Ms. Valsing personally

reached out to National Art Honor Society students with an invitation from Theater Boosters

to participate in the design blitz. Thank you!!

The students who submitted posters are:

Georgia Darwin Christina Tancredi Hannah Lessem Grace Sheridan

Ladan Savar Megan Hula

Theater Boosters is grateful to these students for demonstrating their school spirit by sharing

their time and talents with the Theater program. We hope this is the beginning of an ongoing

collaboration between Art & Theater that will further strengthen both departments. Thanks

also to Mr. Kimball, Mr. Weber, and the Theater parents for their support of this event.

Cap and Gowns will be ordered during lunch shifts outside the cafeteria No-

vember 25th & 26th. There is a early bird price of $9.90. After January, the

price will jump to the regular price of $30.00 so plan to order early.

Please contact Mrs. Kromsky at [email protected] or Mrs. Krochta at ckro-

[email protected] for any additional information.

Thank you to those who nominated students last month. Our winners are as follows:

t Grade 9—Burke Harman, nominated by Tom Blair, for being honest and courteous.

Grade 10-- Fatima Sajid, nominated by John Stevens, Alison White, and Sarah Fast, t Fatima found an-

other student’s purse, containing numerous valuable items, in the cafeteria. Fatima took the purse directly to

the office to return it to the rightful owner.

Grade 11—Anna Shors, nominated by Emilie Seck, Anna went to her teacher after receiving credit on a

wrong answer, even though she was going to get half point instead of 1 point. Thank you for being honest.

Grade 12—Indu Bastakoti, nominated by Sue Drake, Indu asked for an extension to submit a lab write-

up as she was absent on the day of the lab activity. Her lab partners offered her their data and their analysis

answers, but the student chose to spend the time to figure out the lab herself. This student made a hard choice

that will benefit her understanding of course material, at the expense of her limited time and a likely hefty

effort investment--and the honest choice when the ethics of sharing data with lab partners is a murky issue.

These students will receive THS spirit wear and a certificate. Congratulations!!
