The Playbill of Stockton Civic Theatre

2009–2010 Season

R ichard Rodgers' I Remember Mama began as a play by John Van Druten, based on the

fictionalized memoir “Mama’s Bank Account” by Kathryn Forbes. The story focuses on the Hansens, a loving family of Norwegian immigrants living on Steiner Street in San Francisco in the years after the great earthquake, and it is through the oldest daughter Katrin’s eyes that we watch the struggles, hopes and dreams of the family unfold. There are many parallels to what is happening today in the economy and the resulting struggle for families to make it through difficult times. Melissa Esau, playing the title role, says “I opened this SCT Season playing a Swede in The Producers, and am closing it as a Norwegian in Mama!” Melissa is one of the best known actresses, singers and dancers on the SCT stage. She made her debut in Our Town in 1974, and last year played the part of Ulla in The Producers. In recent years, Ms. Esau has begun exploring new areas of production such as direction and costuming, last Season receiving a Willie Award for Best Direction of a Musical in I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change. She also received the theater’s coveted Applause Award at the most recent Bravo Awards Dinner. She will be directing the theater’s 2010 holiday production of Oklahoma!(November 16-December 12, 2010) Director Jim Coleman, who also serves as Artistic Director, directed four SCT shows before joining the theatre staff. He lived and worked in New York for 27 years. Professional Broadway credits include musical direction for Sweeney Todd and Mame with Angela Lansbury, and Anything Goes with Patti Lupone. At Paper Mill Playhouse and the State Theatre of New Jersey, he directed or conducted more than 25 musicals and plays. He has toured the country with Sweeney Todd, The Sound of Music, The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, and A Little Night Music, as well as conducting at the New York City Opera with Beverly Sills, and regional opera companies in the United States and China. Since becoming SCT’s Artistic Director, he has directed Picnic, Cabaret, The Best Little Whorehouse In Texas, The Full Monty, Dearly Departed, Annie Get Your Gun, The Producers, and now, I Remember Mama.

Richard Rodgers

Page 5: I REMEMBER MAMA

Welcome to the final production of our 2009-2010 Season. We are proud to bring you the last show of Richard

Rodgers’ illustrious career. I Remember Mama has been around for over 70 years, most memorably as the play that introduced Marlon Brando to the world of theatre, when he played the role of Nils. Rodgers & Hammerstein were the original producers of the play, and it always remained in Rodgers’ mind that it was the perfect material on which to base a musical. The film arrived in 1947, with Irene Dunne in the title role, and there was a TV series in the 50’s which starred Peggy Wood. Oscar Hammerstein had died before he and Rodgers could collaborate on Mama, but Rodgers persevered and collaborated with Martin Charnin and Thomas Meehan. I saw the show in NYC when it opened in the late 70s and have always wanted to direct it. It is surprisingly relevant today with the economic times in which we are living…the struggle to support a young family, the lack of jobs, and the love and strength that we get only from family. Liv Ullman created the role of "Mama" in the musical…not a good choice, as she could not sing a note…but she sold tickets until audiences spread the word that she couldn’t sing, and the show died a premature death. For this SCT production, we have a wonderful cast. I am thrilled to take you to the world that was San Francisco in 1910, and into the lives of the Hansen family. I sincerely hope you enjoy the trip.

CAROLINE PHOTOGRAPHYA New Era

This year, Caroline Beebe retired from day to day operations at the por-

trait photography studio she founded in 1980.  During a career that spanned 60 years, she received many awards and recognitions, but she says her favorite part of being a pho-tographer was still making people smile. Wonderful friends of Stockton Civic The-atre, she and photographer Kevin Richtik have generously donated high quality pro-fessional photography to SCT for marketing and other "high end" projects.    Kevin, the studio's longtime photogra-pher and digital artist, will continue as op-erator of Caroline studio.   He started with

Caroline in 1986, car-rying her camera bags at weddings!   With her encouragement, he at-tended the world re-nowned Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa

Barbara, and was hired by a leading studio in Southern California. In 1997, however, Kev-in and Caroline reconnected and he returned to Stockton.  Over the past thirteen years, he has used his remarkable artistic talent to cre-ate beautiful portraits of families, children and business leaders from across California's Great Central Valley. Says Kevin, "My goal is to continue the tradition of quality and craftsmanship that Caroline established–creating beautiful cus-tom designed portraits for clients that touch their hearts and warm their homes."

The Economics of Community TheatreOne might assume that with nearly all seats filled at every performance, a not-for-profit theatre would have plenty of money.

Unfortunately, the revenue from tickets covers only about 40% of the theatre’s total expenses. And, without the generosity of the many volunteers who donate their time and talent—from the actors and set builders to the ushers and stage crews—it would not even cover that.

For other needs, we must reach out to the community for funding of operating expenses such as insurance, building maintenance, office supplies and postage; as well as the many educational and cultural programs we offer beyond our main stage. If we are to continue to offer this expanded program of theatre arts, we must turn to you.
