Hola,
What an amazing start to 2020 we are having. Our classrooms are a hive of activity and
wherever I turn I see students and teachers challenging themselves, learning classroom
routines, expectations and enjoying time together. This is the stuff that makes our school such a
wonderful place to be every day. A thank you to all those families that took the time to
participate in the Parent Meet and Greets last week. This night is an important step in forming
positive relationships between home and school to ensure that the year ahead is a productive,
effective and supportive year of learning for your child/ren.
School Photos
School Photo day is on Monday 16th March 2020. Details of how to purchase photos will be sent
home with the next week or two. If you need any support with school uniform please contact
the school and let us know. If you wish to purchase school uniform the uniform shop is open on
Mondays and Thursdays in the Community Hub.
School Council
Nominations for parent and teacher vacancies concluded on Monday. I want to thank the
parents that nominated for our 5 parent positions on Council. We will publish the full list of
school council members for 2020 after our next School Council meeting on the 24th February.
School Annual Implementation Plan for 2020.
At our next school council meeting on Monday 24th February we will be discussing the school
Annual Implementation Plan for 2020. Once the plan is endorsed by council, a copy will be
available on our school website from the March 2020. The focus of the 2020 plan is threefold;
To improve the learning growth of every student in Literacy & Numeracy with a particular
emphasis on Reading by:
• Building Teacher Capacity to differentiate teaching to challenge and ensure progress for
every student in reading.
• Building Teacher Capacity to read and interpret data and a range of assessment strategies
to teach to a student’s point of learning
• Develop authentic student voice opportunities to enhance the quality of relationships and
to inform teacher practice.
We have a wide range of actions that we have planned to achieve this focus. The details of
which will be found in the Annual Implementation Plan on the website, once published.
Money and other Valuables
Please encourage your children to leave treasured possessions at home. Teachers may look after money if
requested but are not responsible for valuables/ personal items, which students bring to school.
Care of Others Personal Belongings
Students who damage or take others property or belongings will be required to repair or replace the
damaged or lost article. Personal property is often brought to school by students, staff and visitors. This
can include mobile phones, electronic games, calculators, toys, sporting equipment and cars parked on
school premises. The Department does not hold insurance for personal property brought to schools and it
has no capacity to pay for any loss or damage to such property.
Student Attendance
I cannot emphasise just how important it is that our students regularly attend school. Fundamentally if
your child is not at school we cannot help them grow and learn. If your child cannot attend school due to
illness please let us know so we can update our records.
In 2020 we have a number of ways that you can inform us about your child’s absences. We now have a
school phone app, website and parent portal. Each of these online tools will allow you to communicate
with the school about student absences. As always you can also call the school or send in a note for the
teacher. The most important thing is that you use one of these methods to communicate with us about
student attendance.
Arriving at school on time is also important in setting your child up for a successful day. Students have an
opportunity to connect with their peers prior to line up or at breakfast club, prepare for their learning by
putting their bags away and being part of their classroom’s morning welcome. Students also receive
valuable information about the schedule for the day when they first arrive into the classroom. Students
who arrive late not only miss this important start to the day but can also cause disruption to their peers
learning when they arrive.
Kind Regards,
Laban Toose

Star Student: Troy 56C
“No one has ever become poor by giving”
Meet Troy from 56C. Troy turned 10 years old last week and instead of gifts for
himself, he requested that friends and family donate food items for him to pass on
to Uniting Care. Troy shared his birthday cake with the Uniting Care staff and
received a well deserved Certificate of Appreciation for his generosity.
This is not the only humanitarian endeavor that Troy has undertaken. Troy also
uses his pocket money to sponsor a child in Africa and has previously collected food
for Wyndham’s homeless.
Well done Troy.
Foundation Learning Community
Foundation students will begin borrowing books from our school library this week. Please
ensure students in 00A and 00B bring their library bags and any borrowed library books every
Wednesday and students in 00C and 00D bring theirs every Thursday. This will ensure your
child can borrow books to read and share with you at home.
If your child has a note for their teacher or a lunch order please begin placing these items into
their note folder. This folder is now a part of your child’s daily morning routine in their
classroom and is required at school every day. Newsletters and other important school
information will be sent home inside their note folders, so please check these regularly with
your child.
Lastly, a very big THANK YOU to our amazing
Foundation parents and families for supporting
our newest school members in the first few
weeks at school!! Your children have settled in
wonderfully and we are grateful for your
ongoing support on their learning journey.
The 1/2 Learning Community
has had a great start to the
year. We have been busy
getting to know each other and
developing our teamwork skills
through problem-solving and
working together.
In Writing, we have been learning about Recounts and developing ideas to put into our Writer’s
Notebooks.
In Mathematics the 1/2 Learning Community are looking at numbers and data. We have been
thinking about the type of questions we can ask to gather data to then represent in a graph.
Our Inquiry question for this term is: What is my family story?
Thank you to everyone who answered the note sent home and
provided a photo for us to use in our Inquiry lessons. If you need
another note, please ask your child’s 1/2 classroom teacher for one.
In Reading, we have been setting up our morning literacy block, focusing on the Reading
Workshop. Ask your child what are the different parts to a Reading Workshop? What does it
look like, sound like, feel like? We have also been busy developing our reading stamina as we
know Reading is the key to Learn, Aspire, and Achieve!
Handy tip: When picking your child up after
school it can be helpful to organise a specific
place within the school to meet them. This way
they always know where you will be, and you
know where they will be too.

Welcome to our 2020 Yr 5/6 Learning Community!
The classroom teachers in this area are Mrs Malloch (Team Leader), Mr Washington,
Mrs Williams and Mrs Fletcher. It was lovely to meet so many families during our
Meet The Families afternoon last week. If you were unable to make it, please feel free
to arrange a time with your child’s teacher for a visit, as we would love to meet you.
We are looking forward to a fantastic year and have lots of activities and programs
planned for our students.
What’s happening in…
Reading?
We have been revisiting who we are as readers. What texts do we prefer reading? Do
I have good reading stamina? What are my strengths as a reader? What are my
reading goals?
We have also revisited what the daily Reading Workshop looks, sounds and feels like
and what the roles of the students and teachers are during this learning block.
We are currently investigating how to obtain information from text and graphics in
order to help us develop our comprehension skills.
Writing?
‘What do good writers do to engage their readers?’ We have been exploring this
question by looking at mentor texts and practising writing narratives that contain the
following features: sizzling starts, backfill, a series of problems to build tension,
character development and riveting resolutions.
Maths?
Place value is the building block for all mathematical knowledge and understandings
so we have been revising this concept and challenging ourselves to work with even
larger numbers. Ask your child to define the term ‘place value’ and see if they can do
so clearly.
Inquiry?
Our question for inquiry is… How is environmental change influenced by people and
natural processes?
SWPBS?
What are my strengths and talents? How can I manage myself? What makes me, me?
WE LOVED meeting our families,
sharing our new classrooms and
learning about our families wishes
for their children.
Thursday 20th February
OUR NEW PEER MEDIATORS have started training. They will have a three-week trial in the playground learning
