Welcome! You are about to embark on a capitalization adventure. Read carefully and follow all directions! Each time you see “Captain Capitalization,” click on him for directions. Follow along on the handout given to you.

Capitalize names, their abbreviations, and titles/relationships used with names. Only capitalize family names like mom or dad if they replace someone’s name.

Charlie and Mary Beth sailed happily along.

Katrina painted eggs for Easter.I gave Mom a potted plant for her birthday.

My little brother had to visit Dr. Kellerman.

Chef P.T. McPherson prepared an authentic Italian dish.

Capitalize geographical names that name particular places and sites. This includes specifically named locations and structures.

Middle Ages, World War I, Magna Carta, Bill of Rights, Civil War, and Crusades.

Capitalize names of groups, organizations, businesses, and government bodies. Capitalize brand names, but not the products they describe.

Capitalize the days of the week, months of the year, civil and religious holidays, special events, and the abbreviations A.M., P.M., B.C., and A.D.

On Saturday, Mom does laundry.

On Easter we hunted eggs.

We get a lot of rain in April.

I would love to attend the Olympics.

The alarm went off at 7:00 A.M.

Capitalize proper adjectives, nationalities, races, religions, religious references, and religious holidays.

Capitalize the first word of a direct quotation and the first word of a sentence

For example:

Capitalize the first word, last word, and all important words in titles.

Capitalize languages and school courses followed by a number.

English, Spanish, German, French (Languages are always capitalized!)

Algebra II, but not algebra

History 152, but not history

Science 350, but not science

Advanced Art II, but not advanced art

Capitalize the names of planets, stars, and constellations. Do NOT capitalize sun or moon, and only capitalize earth if it’s not preceded by the word the.
