candidate I I against the field The hope of the al I lleh is that a sufficient number of I j contests may be decided against Taft by the national committee to prolong- the Ugh beyond the first ballot i From present appearances there is I little prospect of a victory for the al- lies ¬ A little less than 200 contests are to be deoided by the committee but Taft is almost certain of securing I enough of the contested seats to as- sure ¬ illS nomination without a strug I I glee The National Committee I Between now and convention time 1 the struggle will be to control the na I tic nal committee In times past not- ably i in 1884 the convention upset recommendations of the national com- mittee ¬ and in 1892 the antiHarrison- men I at first controlled the national committee pnly to lose it and as a re- sult ¬ scores of Federal officeholders I were seated as delegates and President I Harrison as a result was nominated I on the first ballot only to be over- whelmingly ¬ t I defeated at the polls The I republican who captured control of I the national committee from Quay I Flatt Clarkson Foraker and Wolcott and their friends and used this control- to seat the Federal officeholder con- testants
