HISTORICAL NOTE
The action of the play takes place in Jerusalem in thetwenty-four hours beginning at noon m Thursday; ^pril 2nd, .̂D. 33»
The play io based directly on the four gospels5 and the authorshave not consciously departed from the order of events as therenarrated except in two minor episodes. The interview between Judasand the priests, which takes place outside the Praetorium in ̂ ct III,Scene 1, in. fact occurred in the Temple. The visit of Joseph toPilate5 here placed in Act III, Scene 2, belongs really to a laterhour of the i^amo dove
The actuaa. pr-.--.er-omen of Pilate is unknown; it has been foundnecessary to give him one, and to supply him with a staff arid house- .hold suited to his rank. The only other imaginary character is ,
/ Zillah.
