From the Chief’s DeskBy Fire Chief Don Shoevlin

School is back in session and summer has offi cial come to an end - I think. The Fall Festival was here, football season has begun, and the leaves are starting to fall as the days of sunlight growing shorter. Please be careful of our walkers and bike riders.

I had the pleasure to visit and speak to the Young at Heart Club recently. Thank you for the wonderful meal

and the opportunity to share information about our fi re department with you. It was an enjoyable evening.

We are almost complete with a new storage building at Station Three. As we have acquired items over the years, we fi nd it always a challenge where to keep it. We had a small garage up there, which was busting at the seams. We replaced that garage with this new one. This building will be used to store and protect training props, training equipment, Association equipment, as well as Building & Grounds equipment used at Station Three and the training center.

Congratulation to our newest members. September 13 we swore on eight new fi refi ghters and two new fi re prevention personnel. All ten of the individuals have already made a huge commitment prior to receiving this honor. They are becoming members of an elite group of individuals dedicated to excellence, integrity, and caring. Welcome to a venture which I feel is second to none. Pictures will be published in next month’s newsletter.

On October 4, we will be holding our Annual Fire Prevention Week Open House. This year it will be at Station # 3 from noon until 4:00 PM. The offi cers and fi refi ghters are working on a day fi lled with demonstrations and events. You will be given the opportunity to see equipment and tour the station and training tower. We all look forward to meeting you at this event.

Please check out our web site www.harlemroscoefi re.com to keep up with the progress of the department and individuals. As always don’t hesitate to contact me or stop by if I can be of any assistance.

The new 30’ x 70’ building will be used to store and protect training props, training equipment, Association equipment, as well as Building & Grounds equipment used at Station Three and the training center.

Firefi ghters arrived at a home on Candy Lane on August 14 to fi nd smoke coming from a shed. The fi re inside was quickly extinguished. It seems the fi re started in an electrical box that a pond pump was plugged into and spread into the shed.

The ceiling inside the shed was burned and several items melted due to the heat.

Skills ValidationBy Captain Jay AlmsPhotos by Sheryl Drost

The EMS fi eld offers great challenges everyday to those of us who chose to get involved. Even with all the different calls we respond to, there are still some skills that we just don’t get enough practice with.

Our resource hospital, OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center, has developed a skills lab every year that allows us to show qualifi ed instructors that we still maintain the proper skills to perform the necessary task.

As some of you know, EMT’s at every level are required to re-certify every 4 years. The skills lab is just one way to help with those required continuing educations units (CEU’s).

Instructors from OSF Saint Anthony hold a skills lab at Station One on August 25.

Deputy Chief John Bergeron is a Paramedic so he was tested on the Paramedic skill level.

Station UpdatesBy Assistant Chief Ken O’DellPhotos by Charlotte Alms

We are getting a lot of the motion switches installed at all three stations. Building and Grounds will get plates to replace the switches that no longer work. If there is a room where you think the light should stay on longer, let us know, and we will adjust them.

Thanks to everyone that helped out with our Fill the Boot Drive for MDA. This was the best year that we have had. We collected $7108.58. A big Thanks to everyone that donated during our drive.

Below fi refi ghters Mike Sherbon, Lt. Doug Wolfe, and Lt. Mike Powell hit the streets collecting for MDA.
