“All About Ministry!”(Part 33 of a Series in Romans, “The Righteousness of God!”)

Romans 15:8-13

When we hear the word, “ministry”, we usually thinkof folks who are in full-time service/work for the Lord (pastors[“minister”], missionaries, etc.). But the word has a muchmore generic sense of “serving.” The word we see inRomans 15:3,25,31 and 16:1 means, “a servant.” It is theGreek word from which we get our English word “deacon.” InRomans 15:16 and 27, the Apostle uses a different word, which was the ordinary word used for service in public officeor in the temple. At the end of Romans 15:16, he uses aword used only once in the New Testament, a word meaning,“to perform sacred rites, to minister in Priestly service.” TheApostle Paul - and Jesus! - were about “ministry” - servingothers. We should be too! In our passage today, we learnabout Jesus’ ministry to the Gentiles (us!)

1. Jesus’ Example (vs. 8)

2. The Ministry to the Gentiles (vss. 8-12)

3. The God of Hope (vs. 13)

Routines Worth Singing AboutBY Su Hr IMER

“SLEEPYHEADS, IT’S TIME TO GET UP,” I CALLED FROM TI-IL BOYS’

bedroom door.Proof that we had successfully established a morning routine

came in the form of a question: “Whose turn is it to sing today,Mommy?” my kindergartner asked.

“It’s Thursday, so it will be Levi’s turn today,” I replied.Levi, with a gravelly morning voice, started to bellow out a

familiar tune known through several generations in my family.“This is the way we change our clothes, change our clothes, change our clothes; this is the way we change our clothes soearly in the morning!” he sang, with great emphasis on the“early” part. He repeated this song until he and his sibling hadcompleted the task of putting on clean clothes.

After this, my boys marched to the bathroom. There, Levi’svoice carried through the doorway. “This is the way we washour face, wash our face, wash our face; this is the way we washour face so early in the morning!”

The song continued as it had for many mornings, including achorus for washing hands and combing hair—and finally endingin a giggling, garbled rendition of “This is the way we brush ourteeth!”

AUGUST 13 Bulletin

Life Skill: Grocery ShoppingTo teach my 8-year-old some supermarket basics, I introduced a fun challengethat I called “Operation: Food Shopping.” His mission was to become a “fooddetective.”

Step 1: Establish motive. We planned a meal, identifying the recipe we woulduse.

Step 2: Gather the facts. I explained that our grocery list should include theingredients needed to prepare the meal, and my son wrote out the items neededfor his recipe.

Step 3: Enter the scene, looking for clues. We explored the grocery storetogether. I explained the layout, noting that produce and refrigerated and frozenfoods are usually located at the perimeter of the store. We discussed aisles andaisle numbers, and my son noticed how similar items were grouped together.

Step 4: Solve the case. He loaded his groceries on the conveyor belt and paidthe cashier for his purchase. We then headed home to prepare his meal together!—Tahisha Richards

The Prayer Connection

One way that my wife, Sandy, and I stay connected is by praying together a fewtimes a week. We’ve found that prayer deepens our conversations and leads to agreater level of emotional intimacy.

We first jot down our praises and prayer requests. We list all kinds of things:our marriage, our children, our friends, our church, physical problems, jobconcerns, ministries we love and support, missionaries we know, neighbors, friendswho don’t know Christ.

We hold hands and pray out loud. Sandy prays for her requests and thanks theLord for blessings and answers to prayer, and I follow her.

At first, it was difficult and awkward because wehadn’t prayed together like this for the first 12 earsof our marriage. Sure, we’d prayed before meals andoccasionally in a couples’ Bible study, but that type ofpraying didn’t produce any real spiritual intimacy.

After a few months, these intentional prayer sessionsbecame easier, and they’re now one of the most intimateand meaningful experiences in our marriage. Prayer is awonderful way for us to share our faith in God and ourlove for Him. —Di David Clarke

The Comparison Trap

Have you seen the TVshow that features anenraged chef screamingat his cooks and hurlingpans? The guy is one partculinary genius and onepart crazed badger. True,I have my own struggleswith anger, but comparedto that spittle-emittingchef, I am Saint Francisof Assisi spreadingserenity through a forestof grateful woodlandcreatures.

Comparisons let youcut yourself a lot of slack. If you only compareyourself to people whoare spectacularly worsethan you are, you can feelawesome about yourselfwithout having to do thehard work of actuallychanging. However, the fact that I have not

resorted to fits of kitchen-destroying rage does notdiminish the times whenI am surly because thingsaren’t going my way.

Early in my married life, I was a fanaticabout being on time.If we were one minutelate for church, my jawwould be clenched forhours. I think God gaveme kids who are proneto misplace their shoesto guarantee I would belate—a lot—and thus beforced to confront myinner jerk.

Because my standardis Jesus, not some pan-hurling chef, I continueto work on my tendencytoward anger. The bar isset high. So high, in fact, that I need God’s help toreach it.

lVIy attempts aresometimes less thangraceful. I recently foundmyself in a parking lot,

scribbling a helpful noteto the apparently blinddriver of a bright redCorvette who had takentwo parking spaces. Mywife asked to see thenote, which I reluctantlyhanded over.

“Hmm,” she mused.“I’m just not picturingJesus using a term likeblithering moron withthe navigational skills ofa diseased armadillo.”

Long pause.I really wanted to

slap the note on thewindshield of that car.And I would have seta really bad examplefor my wife and kids.Grudgingly, I tore up thenote.

Jesus set the standard. So each day I ask Godfor the power to be thehusband and father Hewants me to be.—Dave Meurer

fEnO[IAnswers to your questions

What are some waysto balance parentingwhile working fromhome?

Answer: Ifyourplansfor making money fromhome are going to thrive, you’ll need to learn thedelicate art of balancingthe needs of your familyand your business. Hereare five ideas:

Establish office hours. It’s wise to set aside aspecific time each dayto work. During thatrime, post a Mom [orDadi Working sign andinstruct the children toplay quietly, read, drawor color. Be sure to establish a tradition of coffeebreaks so the kids canlook forward to a specialtime with you. They’ll be

less likely to interrupt ifthey know that at 10:30you always spend a halfhour with them.

Work the night shift. After your spouse comeshome from work, he cantake the kids for bikerides, play games, readstories and give themtheir nightly bath whileyou work. (However, make sure you later haveDaddy and Mommy timetoo!)

Get some work-timetoys. Purchase specialtoys or DVDs that canbe used only while Momworks.

Create a chore chart.Developing a chore chartis advisable for all mothers, but it’s mandatoryfor mothers with home

businesses. The childrencan be encouraged towork on their choresduring your office hours.

Form playgroups ororganize a baby-sittingco-op. Join a playgroupwith other moms whotake turns hosting on acertain day of the week. The more moms thatjoin, the less frequentlyyou have to host. Orset up a baby-sittingexchange. An alternativeto a large group is fortwo home-business momsto alternate care eachweek.
