CHANGING LIVES2012 ANNUAL REPORT

Page 2: I was able to get back on my feet - American Kidney Fund

The American Kidney Fund is the leading provider of charitable assistance to the nation’s dialysis patients. In 2012, we helped nearly 84,000 people—1 out of every 5 dialysis patients in the United States— to maintain their health insurance coverage and pay for treatment-related expenses that insurance doesn’t cover.

We work to educate the public about kidney disease and prevent new cases. Our national campaign, Pair Up: Join the Fight to Prevent Kidney Disease, empowers women to protect themselves—and the people they love—from kidney disease. We offer free kidney health screenings in communities nationwide, extensive online health education materials and courses, and a toll-free health information HelpLine (866.300.2900).

WHOWEARE

Why Our Work MattersSince our founding in 1971, the heart of our mission has been to help dialysis patients access the health care they need. By helping patients maintain that access, we are helping them to live longer and better lives. For many people, a diagnosis of kidney failure brings with it overwhelming medical expenses. At the same time, the typical dialysis treatment schedule and the physical rigors of treatment can make it difficult for patients to maintain employment. Our grants help the nation’s neediest dialysis patients afford the costs associated with treatment.

We also are working to increase awareness of chronic kidney disease so that people who are at risk may avoid it altogether. Chronic kidney disease affects as many as 31 million people in the United States, and it is often preventable. Two-thirds of all cases are caused by diabetes and high blood pressure. Our public education and screening programs reach people who are at risk so they may take action to protect their kidney health.

Our EfficiencyNinety-seven cents of every dollar we spend goestoward programs and services. In 2012, ConsumersDigest named us one of the nation’s top three health charities for spending efficiency. As an 11-time recipient of the top “Four Star” rating from Charity Navigator, we are ranked among the top 1 percent of charities nationwide for fiscal accountability. In addition, we hold an A+ rating from the American Institute of Philanthropy; adhere to the National Health Council Standards of Excellence; and are a member of the Better Business Bureau Wise Giving Alliance.

Dear Friends,The American Kidney Fund provided $180 million in treatment-related financial assistance to the nation’s kidney patients in 2012. Our vital work is possible because of your steadfast support, and we want you to know how seriously we take our commitment to stewardship of the donated dollar.

We were proud in 2012 to continue our longstanding track record of expending 97 cents of every donated dollar on programs and services, not overhead. Consumers Digest took note, and named us one of the nation’s top three health charities for spending efficiency. Charity Navigator awarded us its top “Four Star” rating for the 11th consecutive year. Less than 1 percent of charities nationwide have received this rating for 11 consecutive years.

Our efforts to spend wisely have enabled us to achieve the outcomes outlined in this report. With your support, we will continue to make a difference in the lives of people living with kidney disease, as well as in the lives of those who are at risk.

Sincerely,

Timothy G. Morgan Chairman of the Board

Dear Friends,In 2012, the theme of our gala, The Hope Affair, was “All Things Are Possible.” This is a fitting theme not only for a gala, but for everything we do at the American Kidney Fund with your support.

With your support, it’s possible for us to help nearly 84,000 dialysis patients maintain their access to health care. It’s possible for us to provide free kidney disease screenings in 18 cities nationwide to people who are at risk. It’s possible for us to reach millions of people nationwide with information about the impact of kidney disease, and how it can be prevented.

Our vision is that someday, there will be a world without kidney disease. Until that day, we are working to ensure that kidney patients have access to the health care they need, and we are working to ensure there are far fewer people with preventable cases of kidney disease. We are grateful to you for the support that makes our efforts possible.

Sincerely,

LaVarne A. BurtonPresident and CEO

2012 ACCOMPLISHMENtS Patient financial AssistanceWe continued to lead the nation in charitable assistance to kidney patients in 2012, providing treatment-related financial assistance to nearly 84,000 dialysis patients.

Our Health Insurance Premium Program (HIPP) in 2012 enabled 63,000 dialysis patients to maintain health insurance coverage. HIPP pays premiums for Medicare, Medigap, commercial and COBRA health coverage. HIPP is supported by voluntary charitable contributions from dialysis providers.

Another key grant program, our Safety Net Program, provides assistance to dialysis patients who are in urgent need of help with expenses related to treatment and who have exhausted all other means of financial support. Safety Net Grants helped 18,400 patients in 2012 with out-of-pocket expenses not covered by insurance, such as the cost of transportation to and from treatment, nutritional supplements, and other essentials.

Our Patient Assistance Program provides free medications to dialysis patients. Through a partnership with Genzyme, a Sanofi company, 2,200 dialysis patients who had no prescription drug coverage received either Renvela® or Hectorol® through this program in 2012.

More than 100 dialysis patients in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Rhode Island received Disaster Relief Grants from us to help with emergency expenses in the wake of Superstorm Sandy. Grants helped patients pay for essentials such as food, shelter, medications and transportation to reach dialysis treatment.

Our grants helped children with kidney disease to attend summer camp. In 2012, more than 60 children attended summer camps specially equipped to handle their medical needs.

Pair Up: Join the fight to Prevent Kidney diseaseOur national prevention campaign, Pair Up: Join the Fight to Prevent Kidney Disease, empowers women to protect themselves—and the people they love—from kidney disease. Pair Up encourages women to join the fight against kidney disease by taking two simple actions: Learning if they’re at risk for kidney disease and spreading the word about kidney disease to friends and loved ones who also may be at risk.

We worked in 2012 to reach people nationwide with the central health message of the Pair Up campaign: if you have diabetes or high blood pressure, you’re at risk for kidney disease—so get tested, and spread the word to a friend or loved one who may also be at risk.

We screened at-risk individuals in 18 cities nationwide in 2012. Our efforts resulted in 27,650 people being screened.

In Atlanta, Chicago, Houston, San Antonio and Washington, D.C., we held our Kidney Action Days: free, fun-filled family events that bring the message of kidney disease prevention to local communities. At the events in Atlanta, Houston, San Antonio and Washington, we also held our Kidney Action Day Walk, a fundraising and awareness-building walk.

Our media outreach in the Kidney Action Day cities reached millions of people with prevention messaging, further extending the reach of the Pair Up campaign.

The Pair Up campaign’s website, PairUpNow.org, continued to increase in popularity, with nearly 45,000 people registered online for the campaign by year’s end. We provided visitors with information about the steps toward a healthier lifestyle that can prevent kidney disease and its co-morbidities.

Public Health EducationOur public health education initiatives educate patients and caregivers about kidney disease. Our materials and tools are designed to help the general public, patients and their families learn about kidney disease and take steps to prevent it by managing risk factors; slow the progression of kidney disease when it occurs; and improve outcomes for those on dialysis.

We offer more than 20 titles, including brochures, fact sheets, toolkits and planners, many of which are available in Spanish as well as English. New education materials completed in 2012 include a fact sheet series on kidney replacement therapies; two calendar planners, Living Well with Chronic Kidney Disease and Living Well on Dialysis; a Pair Up kidney disease prevention toolkit in Spanish; and a children’s publication, Fight Back! A Super Hero Guide to Battling Chronic Kidney Disease.

We also offer a toll-free HelpLine (866.300.2900). In 2012, the HelpLine responded to 42,000 inquiries from the public about kidney health, dialysis treatment and financial issues related to treatment.

Professional Education Our professional education program helps health professionals stay apprised of best practices and the latest information about kidney disease, including its prevention.

Our professional education topics fall within the public health and prevention realm. Many topics are psychosocial or interpersonally based. The skills these courses develop in health care professionals, such as communication and patient education, are critical to quality of care and patient outcomes. We obtain continuing education credits from many professional groups, and provide all courses for free or for a minimal fee, depending on the specialty.

In 2012, we launched a new online learning management system to facilitate development and delivery of online courses, and introduced four new courses: Caring for Others, Caring for Yourself; Depression: Building a Foundation for Care; Understanding Depression: Helping Patients to Improve Outcomes and Quality of Life; and Helping Patients Prepare for Kidney Replacement Therapy.

AdvocacyOur government relations efforts in 2012 focused on a number of critical policy issues affecting kidney patients. We advocated for inclusion of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) treatment as an essential health benefit under the Affordable Care Act; worked to ensure that the new health insurance exchanges do not discriminate against patients with ESRD; advocated for a clear minimum standard for anemia management in the ESRD Quality Improvement Program; continued to advocate that ESRD patients be given the option of continuing private insurance coverage, rather than being enrolled in Medicare as primary insurer after 30 months; voiced our support for no further cuts to the Medicare ESRD program; and advocated for lifetime immunosuppressive drug coverage for kidney transplant recipients.

We worked throughout the year to grow our Advocacy Network—kidney patients, caregivers and others who have an interest in policy issues affecting kidney patients. By year’s end, the Advocacy Network had grown to nearly 1,300 members in 47 states and the District of Columbia.

A highlight for our Advocacy Network was March 1, when we held our Kidney Action Day on the Hill and introduced our Pair Up campaign to the Capitol Hill community. Ten Advocates from around the country participated in the event, meeting with Congressional offices. Our celebrity health champion, Laila Ali, was on hand to spread the word about kidney disease prevention, and dozens of Congressional staffers and Members of Congress joined us. We enlisted the participation of elected officials and staff in our Kidney Action Day events around the country and our gala, The Hope Affair.

Clinical Scientist in Nephrology ProgramSince 1988, our Clinical Scientist in Nephrology Program has awarded grants to nephrologists who desire to pursue an academic career and whose primary professional commitment is to scholarship in the provision of patient care. Awardees conduct prevention and outcomes research while receiving advanced training in essential skills such as medical ethics, biostatistics and epidemiology. In 2012, we selected three fellows.

Saga Nigwekar, M.D., was awarded the American Kidney Fund-Sanofi Clinical Scientist in Nephrology Fellowship. Dr. Nigwekar is a clinical and research fellow at Massachusetts General Hospital. His research will examine calciphylaxis and the role of vitamin D analogues and evaluation of serum biomarker.

Margaret Yu, M.D., was also awarded the American Kidney Fund-Sanofi Clinical Scientist in Nephrology Fellowship. Dr. Yu is a nephrology fellow at the University of Washington. Her research will examine the gender differences in chronic kidney disease prevalence, risk factors and progression in an outpatient diabetic population.

Katherine Lynch, M.D., was awarded the American Kidney Fund-Amgen Clinical Scientist in Nephrology Fellowship. A nephrology fellow at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Dr. Lynch will examine the clinical effectiveness of common interventions aimed at mitigating intradialytic hypotension.

Strategic Alliances In 2012, we engaged 17 national organizational partners to help prevent and control the impact of kidney disease.

Many partners, such as the National Episcopal Health Ministries and the American Nephrology Nurses’ Association (ANNA), distributed our educational materials to their membership. The National Baptist Convention, USA, Inc., promoted our educational materials to its health leaders during Kidney Month in March. The American Association of Diabetes Educators worked with us to create new accredited educational courses for its professional membership. Partners like the American Diabetes Association and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. (AKA) supported our outreach events by providing screening and exhibit space at their conferences and expos. AKA also enlisted volunteers to assist at Kidney Action Days and created teams for the Kidney Action Day Walks.

Many of our partners supported the Pair Up campaign, encouraging their membership to visit the website for resources and to register. With others, we developed joint targeted campaigns to promote awareness of kidney disease. For example, we created an educational campaign with NIH’s National Kidney Disease Education Program around Family Health History Month in November, and supported an effort to recognize the nurses who help patients affected by kidney disease with ANNA during Nephrology Nurses Week in September. Additionally, the International Council on Active Aging published an article on kidney health by AKF President and CEO LaVarne A. Burton in the June issue of The Journal on Active Aging, including a separate handout to complement the article and links to other AKF and partner resources.

Media and Online OutreachWe attained 370 million media impressions in 2012, securing media coverage in national and local print, television, radio, and online outlets to raise awareness of kidney disease nationwide.

We worked in 2012 to ensure that our website, www.KidneyFund.org, continued to provide accurate and thorough kidney health education and information to the public. The website registered 3.35 million views in 2012. A generous grant from Google, Inc., provided us with more than $465,000 in donated Google AdWords, driving significant traffic to our website.

Our social media network doubled in 2012, as we worked to engage the public with content that is of interest to people who care about kidney issues. By year’s end, we had more than 48,000 people following us on Facebook and Twitter, participating in daily conversations about kidney disease and related topics.

the Hope Affair: All things Are PossibleOur fourth annual national gala brought thenation’s renal community to Washington, D.C., on October 17 for an evening of honoring the inspirational spirit of people who are living with kidney disease.

Earlier in the year, we asked our social media community to nominate individuals for the Hero of Hope award and the Caregiver of the Year award. The Hero of Hope award is given annually to a kidney patient who is making a difference in the community. This year’s honoree, Eric Dolby, Sr., is a dialysis patient who overcame homelessness and now works with the homeless in Raleigh, N.C. The Caregiver of the Year award, which is part of our Pair Up campaign, goes annually to someone who is providing extraordinary care to a dialysis patient. Debbie Nutt of Michigan received the award this year for the compassionate care she provides to her best childhood friend.

We also honored young Amelia Rowniewski, a 7-year-old from New Jersey who won our national art contest for kids with kidney disease. More than 6,000 people cast a vote in our online contest to choose a winner. Amanda’s winning entry, “All Things Are Possible,” provided the theme for The Hope Affair, as attendees celebrated all that is possible for people living with kidney disease. Keynote speaker Alan Hobson—a cancer survivor and Mount Everest summiteer—shared his personal experience that indeed, all things are possible.

“The Hope Affair is a special time for the American Kidney Fund as we bring together the national renal community and policymakers to celebrate inspiring individuals who bring our mission to life,” said LaVarne A. Burton, president and chief executive officer of the American Kidney Fund. “This is a time to celebrate those who inspire us to continue in the fight against kidney disease and an opportunity to highlight the programs and services supported by funds raised through the gala.”
