Redmond Eye Doctors, at 16375 N.E. 85th St. Suite 102, will be holding a sunglasses sale, Aug. 8-26. The sunglasses are specially designed to help kids and adults protect their eyes from harmful sun rays.
Plain dark lenses do not protect your eyes, accord-ing to Dr. Rania Montecillo. In fact, she said, the darker they are the more dam-age they can do since your
pupils dilate (get bigger) with darkness, hence letting in more of those damaging UV rays from the sun.
Kids naturally have larger pupils so be sure to protect their precious eyes, said Montecillo, adding that most sun damage occurs before the age of 18. The damage these UV rays cause includes cataracts, light sensitivity, macular
degeneration, ptyrigiums (little yellow spots on the whites of your eyes) and skin cancer on your eyelids and surrounding skin.

Lake Washington High School at 12033 N.E. 80th St. in Kirkland will hold an open house and barbecue on Aug. 16 from 4 to 7 p.m. This event is an opportunity for the community to see the newly constructed high school, which also houses Northstar Junior High. Students will lead visitors on a tour of the new school, which will high-light the academic houses, performing arts
center and library among other spaces. The modernization of Lake Washington was funded through a 2006 bond measure.
Features of the new school include four academic houses, which are sets of classrooms for teams of teachers who will work with students through their entire high school career. Visitors are asked to use the temporary entrance off Northeast 75th Street.

Focusing your child’s physical tness on fun activities will increase
your child’s ability to move with con dence and com-petence.
Exercise increases overall metabolism, builds
a healthy heart and lungs, strong bones and muscles, and improves coordina-tion, balance, posture and exibility.
INFANTEncourage babies to
explore activities that al-low for reaching, rolling, sitting, crawling, pulling themselves up and walking. “Tummy Time” is the per-fect opportunity for babies to practice li ing their heads and develop strong muscles. Placing toys just out of reach encourages babies to reach for the toys, assisting in physical devel-opment.
FIRST STEPS/TODDLERSupport young toddlers’
mastery of walking by al-lowing them to be active!
Play with them as they learn to run, hop, dance and throw. Have them chase bubbles or invent a silly walk - play becomes exercise. Remember to always provide encourage-ment to toddlers as they build self-con dence.
PRESCHOOL-PLUSPreschoolers need plenty
of time and space to run around and play. Taking your child to a playground or park is a great way to release energy and exercise.
Encourage creative danc-
ing and riding scooters and tricycles. Play “Statues” by playing up-tempo music. Have your child move while the music is playing and freeze into a statue when you pause it. Play outside with your child and teach hand-eye coordination by showing the basics of throwing, catching and kicking a large, so ball. for all your advertising needs.
• Find out all you can about your chosen school and the philosophy behind it to help you un-derstand how the needs of your child are being met.
• Attend all school par-ent education meetings.
• Try to arrange for both parents to attend parent-teacher conferences. Make a list of questions and points you wish to discuss with your child’s teacher.
• Children thrive on predictable
schedules. Try to make meal times and bedtime the same every day.
• Make sure your child has enough sleep, try to make a calm and happy ritual of going to bed and getting up in the morning and keep
bedtimes consistent. Th e recom-mended amounts per 24 hours are 11 to 13 hours for 3 to 5 year olds and 10 to 11 hours for 5 to 12 year olds.
• Provide a nu-tritious breakfast for your child.
• Leave enough time for your child to dress him/herself.
• Let the ride to school be child centered. Turn off the radio news; avoid talking on the phone; sing songs and don’t worry about voice quality; talk about what you see on the way. Count red cars, count
trucks, etc.• Aim to arrive
at school on time. Coming into the classroom late and missing the initial socialization makes it diffi cult for your child
to settle as well as being disrup-tive for the other children in the room.
• Let the teacher know if your child may be reacting to an un-
usual or adverse situation — lack of sleep, moving house, parent out of town, parent sick, a relative staying, etc.
• Be reliable. Let your child know if you will be late picking him/her up. Never say you’ll be right back if you won’t.Janet Villella is co-director of the Sammamish Montessori School in Redmond at 7655 178th Place N.E. For more information, email [email protected] or call (425) 883-3271
