W hen it came to picking this year’s grand marshal for the Lion’s Grand Parade, the Silverdale

Dandi Lions did as they normally do, think about the pool of citizens or business folks that have contributed something signi cant and important to the youth of the com-munity.

Joanne Haselwood t the bill perfectly.“ is year the choice was not hard,” said

Carla Larson, Whaling Days president. “She well deserves it.”

is summer’s opening of the Haselwood Family YMCA on Randall Way, is seen by the Dandi Lions a huge contribution to the youth of the community.

And, as many in Kitsap County well know, her $2.5 million gi to the YMCA was the latest by the well known philan-thropic local business family who have been generous for decades, including the 2007 $1 million endowment for Olym-pic College’s Haselwood Library to keep them current with technology each year. e fund generates $50,000 annually for upgrades.

“It’s a good way to carry on Chuck’s name,” Joanne Haselwood said of the

YMCA building carrying the family name. “He would be proud to have his name on this facility knowing that his legacy will make a di erence in our community for many generations.”

Haselwood, in 2009, said that her husband would have made the donation himself had he the chance.

“She’s so committed and has so much ad-miration for her late husband Chuck,” said local YMCA spokesperson Michelle LaRue.

Along with the ability to serve up to 15,000 members, the Haselwood “Y” pro-vides jobs for an estimated 200 people.

e Haselwood’s four daughters all swam at the YMCA growing up and now their children and grandchildren have a safe enjoyable place to swim too, said Roland Arper, parade co-chair.

A er hearing of her selection as grand marshal, Haselwood said she would gain some bragging rites with her granddaugh-

ter that once cruised the Lion’s Grand Parade as Katie Kitsap.

ese days, Haselwood gi s are given in the name of Joanne’s late husband Chuck, well respected business man that built the Haselwood Auto Group, who died in 2006. e couple provided generous support to Pendergast Park, the Bremerton Ice Arena and the rebuilding of the Olympic College Library a er the original collapsed during a 1996 snowstorm. e library, with a 60,000 book capacity, opened in the spring of 2000.

Larson said the honoring of Haselwood with grand marshal is in equal part to raise more awareness of the new YMCA facility and to honor Joanne Haselwood.

Haselwood’s contribution was spurred by the $1 million gi by Ron and Nadean Ross. It really inspired her contribution, said Arper. Together they encouraged others to get behind the “Y” and make it a reality, he said.

“It’s about those who support kids,” said Larson.

Haselwood’s nancial gi helps Silver-dale kids have a better life with a place can hang out safely, that does not cost a lot of money, Larson said.

Over the last 39 years, Whaling Days has become a summer

staple for our community. It’s a fun filled

weekend for our hard working families and friends to enjoy.

As a sponsor, we thank the Whaling Days volunteers and

organizers. Join us at this wonderful family event.

Once again, rubber ducks in the hundreds — no wait, thousands — will wear their sunglasses and race in Dyes Inlet as part of the Great Kitsap Duck Race that will conclude Whaling Days.

A boat will release the small yellow ducks into the water at 3 p.m. Sunday, July 31 at the Silverdale Waterfront Park. People pay to adopt a duck or two before the race and can win prizes based on how their little one swims. e event, in its 18th year, is sponsored by the Silverdale Rotary Club and is its primary fundraiser. Proceeds from the duck adoptions have in the past gone to Hospice of Kitsap County, Central Kitsap School District student scholarships, Kitsap Kids Playground and toward other community organizations or projects.

Proceeds from this year’s race will go toward the Haselwood Family YMCA’s teen center. e Silverdale facility opened in June and Rotary members selected to award the ‘Y’ with a $150,000 grant in March that will be provided over a ve-year period.

Last year, 18,381 ducks were sold and raced their way to the shore. is was 2,000 ducks more than in the 2009 event. Evonne White, of Silverdale, walked away with the fastest duck and won a Nissan pickup truck — or $16,000. is year’s rst place winner will also be awarded a Nissan pickup or $16,000.

ere are many opportunities to adopt a duck including center court of Kitsap Mall and the Silverdale locations of Safeway, Albertsons, Kitsap Bank, and Co-

lumbia Bank. Advantage Nissan, Ben Bridge Jewelers in Kitsap Mall and the Haselwood Family YMCA will also have ducks available for purchase.

At Whaling Days, ducks can be adopted at Saturday’s pancake breakfast and along the parade route as well as at Rotary booths at the festival.

Just as regularly as some families may look forward to rework shows at the Fourth of

July, some anticipate the coming of Whaling Days in Silverdale at the end of the month.

No, there aren’t any whale sight-ings but there are always lots of free or a ordable fun for everyone. And, the festivities do kick o with its own reworks show!

e annual event draws people from all over the county to cel-ebrate summer and the community.

e festival is not-for-pro t and it is entirely operated by volunteers. Whaling Days donates proceeds back to the community through scholarships as well as grants to lo-cal community organizations. Last year, six students in the Central Kitsap School district received the Whaling Days — Hank Mann-Sykes Scholarship. In addition, money from proceeds were do-nated to the Clear Creek Trail and the Kitsap County Humane Society Rescue Service.

Aside from giving back to the community, Whaling Days has something for the whole family. If being active is essential, participating in activities like running a 4-mile race in the Whale of a Run or cycling in the Tour de Kitsap may be a t. For those who don’t want to get involved so much in the action, other options include strolling the street fair or watching the parade that begins at Ridgetop Boulevard and Silverdale Way.

For the artsy folk, there will be a rst ever art show to accompany Whaling Days, “Art Alley.” It will be located on Lowell Street. And, of course, no summer event would be made complete without live music. e main stage at the Silverdale Wa-terfront Park will be home to many di erent acts throughout the weekend including e Timebenders, Stone Axe, Tumbledown and e Pendletones.
