How will the success of the i3 grant to scale-up Reading Recovery be defined?
• Grant goals will have been met
• Attrition (loss of teachers) will be low
• Each teacher = about 50 students
• The evaluation will be armor-proofed with large effects

Recruitment and attritionAs of June 4, 2013…
2,084 Teachers (95% of 3rd year goal)
1,799 Active teachers
285 Teacher exits before MOA completed (14%)
2 Reasons for Attrition
• Personal or School-based
– Part time teachers moving to full time position
– Rotating the training (training all the staff)
Attrition is problematic
• Expertise increases with experience. There is a negative impact on overall outcomes when teachers leave the role after 1-2 years (D’Agostino, 2012).
• Part-time teachers increase the cost of RR–Part time teachers: 8 students a year–Full time teachers: 50 students a year

Armor-Proofing the External Evaluation
• Effect sizes will be largest ever reported
• Achilles Heel:– Participation rate at 76%– Critics will say: “What schools did not participate?
Effect sizes may have been lower if they had stayed in”
Internal Audit Revealed:
• Participation rate after audit: 95% but 76% has to be reported for Year 2.
• List of schools in IDEC database incorrect– One school entered two times, two names– Teacher leader no longer with a school –
assessments sit unopened in school– A school no longer with Reading Recovery
How you can continue to help define the success of the i3 grant to scale-up
• Focus recruitment efforts on full-time teachers
• Help trainers update list of schools now (expect two waves of school lists to verify)
• Continue high level of participation in the external evaluation
