PowerPoint Presentationoperations, research and medical applications
• Small volumes – oils, scintillation liquids,
decontamination
aqueous liquids) – mixed waste
of WAC
• Availability of suitable immobilization matrices
• Scalable technologies – mobile & modular
organic waste
have limits on the volume and/or form of organic waste
Organic Waste
Overview
• Originally conceived as a general CRP – Original Focus: “understanding of the inventory, diversity and
methods of handling wastes containing long-lived alpha emitters.”
– Refined Focus: Treatment of problematic alpha wastes streams that do not typically fit in established processing trains such as Dilute wastes, Organic Liquids/solids; the secondary goal is to identify cost effective or non-traditional methods of treatment.
• The CRP is currently comprised of research teams from:
Belgium
China
France
– High Alpha Wastes: Research Areas
• The CRP output is not a single product but a collection of smaller products from each research area
taken as a group
• The research areas identified during the first Research Coordination Meeting and their outputs, are
listed below.
1. Characterization for problematic alpha wastes: A standalone report will be generated with possible links to both
Research Area 2 (as extra information in the Digital Content) and with Area 5
2. Reduction in the physical hazards present: A compilation of potential physical hazards and treatment methods
(established or under investigation) will be collected and hosted as Digital Content
3. Reduction in the volume, cost to store, and cost to process the waste materials: A compilation of the current
status volume reducing technologies hosted as Digital Content
4. Conditioning Hazardous Organics, Organic residues, and concentrates: Digital Content will be generated and
the information incorporated into Area 2’s database of hazards and mitigations.
5. Analysis of WAC for alpha bearing wastes between countries: A survey will be circulated and analyzed for
good practice, analysis techniques, and possible technical gaps.
Digital Content – Databases, Online Content (e.g. Wiki articles) or other materials that can be hosted and accessed by all members
through a central portal (i.e., nucleus.iaea.org)
Coordinated Research Project –
• Belgium: Investigation of several commercial, low cost, inorganic sorbents for liquid organics for compliance with disposal criteria.
• France: ELIPSE (a plasma torch working under a water column) has been developed to treat orphan organic wastes such as paint thinners, solvents, etc.
• Ukraine: Evaluating a special composite for the cementation of both solid and liquid radioactive wastes.
• Italy: Destructive and Non-destructive techniques are being used to analyze organic liquid wastes and correct for non-homogeneity within the samples.
• Poland: Characterization of organic wastes with TOC, ICP-MS and α/γ spectroscopy.
Pre-disposal Handbook Series Part I: Technical Overview – provides a concise summary of technical information.
Part II: Annexes* – provide detailed information on technical options, design basis, operational requirements, best practices, lessons learned, emerging technologies
Drafts will be made available on the IPN
network site as they become available
