The role of the IAEA
• The IAEA is widely known as the world's "Atoms for Peace" organization within the United Nations family.
• Established in 1957 as the world's centre for cooperation in the nuclear field, the Agency works with its Member States - and multiple partners worldwide - to promote the safe, secure and peaceful use of nuclear technologies
• As at May 2015, 164 Member States.

At present, 155 power reactors shut-down for decommissioning worldwide:
ü 17 fully dismantled, ü about 50 in process of being dismantled, ü about 60 being kept in safe enclosure mode, ü 3 power reactors were entombed, and ü the rest do not yet have specified decommissioning strategies.
In addition ... more than 400 research reactors & other nuclear facilities have been decommissioned or are in progress or are developing strategies.

ü General Safety Requirements GSR Part 6 “Decommissioning of Facilities”;
ü Endorsed by the Board of Governors in March 2014 and published in July 2014;
ü To supersede WS-R-5 (2006); ü Brings the requirements in line with the new BSS (2011); ü Entombment not considered acceptable strategy for “normal”
decommissioning, still last option under “exceptional circumstances”;
ü Addresses “phased approach” to planning, licensing and conduct;
