JIM GORDON ’31 BOB SCHUL ’66

Bob Schul became Mi-ami’s first Olympic track

champion, winning a gold medal in the 5000-meters (13:48.8) at the 1964 Olym-pic Games in Tokyo. He was the first American to capture a gold medal in this event. At one time, Schul held five American and NCAA records in the two-mile, three-mile and 5000-meter events. He still holds the Miami records for the one-mile (3:59.1), two-mile (8:47.3) and three-mile (13:15.6) runs. Schul was inducted into the Miami Athletics Hall of Fame in 1973.

JACK BACHELER ’66

Jack Bacheler is the only Miamian to participate

in two Olympics. He was a finalist in the 5000-meters at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City and placed ninth in the marathon at the 1972 Olym-pics in Munich. He earned All-America honors twice as a collegian, finishing seventh at the NCAA Cross Country Championship in 1964 and second in the steeplechase at the NCAA Track & Field Cham-pionship in 1966. He captured the three-mile run at the MAC Championship in 1965 and 1966. Bacheler was inducted into the Miami Athletics Hall of Fame in 1981.

An outstanding track runner and end in football, Jim

Gordon was the first Miamian to compete in the Olympics. He was a finalist in the 400-me-ters at the 1932 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. While at Miami, he was undefeated and Buckeye Conference champion for three years in his specialty, the 440-yard dash. He earned All-America status in 1931, when he finished second at the national championship meet. His best time in the 440 came in the finals of the Olympic Trials, where he clocked a 47.8. Gordon was inducted into the Miami Athletics Hall of Fame in 1970.

Tom Jones had one of the most prolific careers of any Miami athlete. He won

five MAC championships in the shot put and discus from 1953 to 1955, was a two-time national champion in the shot put, and was a three-time all-American. Jones’ MAC cham-pionship-winning mark of 59-1 in the shot put, set at the 1955 MAC meet, is the oldest record in the current Miami record book. Jones also was a three-time All-MAC se-lection as a tackle for the Miami football team and went to the National Football League’s Cleveland Browns in 1955. He was inducted into the Miami Athlet-ics Hall of Fame in 1989.
