IAML Congress San Sebastiân/Donostia, Spain 1998

I A M L PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Pamela Thompson

The beginning of a term of office is a time to look forward, not back, but it is also perhaps a time to reflect on what membership in the Association and involvement in its work mean, to consider all that IAML has achieved in the

past, its current strengths and weaknesses, to try to comprehend all the activ

ity which goes on around the world in music libraries and archives, and to

recognise all those who work to improve music libraries and contribute to IAML's work, so often on a voluntary basis.

In the more immediate past, we were treated to a fine example of how a national branch can establish itself so solidly and quickly that it is able to

organise a most memorable annual meeting. The conference in San Sebastian/ Donostia in June 1998 was in an exceptional location, with the conference

meeting in the Miramar Palace overlooking a glorious bay, with excursions to other stunning areas of the Basque country (not to mention its food and wine), and to unforgettable concerts of Spanish music. All involved in the Spanish Organizing Committee, quite the most cheerful I have ever encountered in the face of our usual unreasonable requests, are to be congratulated on a wonder ful week.

The conference program gave us an unrivalled opportunity, not only to learn more of Spain's extraordinary collections, but also to hear, mostly for the

first time, of the work being undertaken in Latin America, thanks to the

Spanish branch's foresight in inviting delegates from that part of the world. It is indeed encouraging that conference organizing committees now see the sup

port of delegates from countries who could not be present without financial

assistance as central in the conference organization. IAML's "outreach" work has in general become central in the activities of

the Association. Many national branches have established their own programs of support which are greatly appreciated. As outgoing Treasurer of IAML, it

gave me great pleasure to put forward a recommendation from the Board that some of the Association's accumulated reserves should be used for a separate

outreach fund to assist national branch conference organizing committees in

bringing delegates to our meetings. 1 have greatly valued the time I have spent as IAML Treasurer. It gave me

an unrivalled opportunity to have contact with members around the world, a contact I am determined not to lose. I should like to encourage all national branches and indeed all members of IAML to keep in touch, to let me know how they see the Association and its role, send suggestions as to how we could

improve or extend our work profitably, or just keep me abreast of news. At the end of 1998, Martie Severt takes over as IAML Treasurer, and I am

delighted that the Association's finances will be in such good hands. It will also

help me tremendously that the new Board which was elected in San Sebastiân will bring so much accumulated experience to our work. The Board now con sists of Past-President Veslemöy Heintz (Sweden), Vice-Presidents Massimo Gentili-Tedeschi (Italy), Joachim Jaenecke (Germany), John Roberts (USA), and Kirsten Voss-Eliasson (Denmark), with Martie Severt (Netherlands) as Treasurer and Alison Hall (Canada) as Secretary General. It is especially good in an international association to have so many countries represented. Please ensure that we can represent the whole membership well by making your views known to us. I look forward to hearing from you and to ensuring that the work of the Association remains the excellent source of communication, col

laboration, and inspiration which I have always found it.
